I recently bought a best of CD of deep purple as I knew a couple of their hits, it's a dreadful production, is there a good best of as a taster or should I just start with proper albums?jim

start with the ritchie blackmore stuff. after WDWTWA, head back to the early stuff for more psyche and noodling. then you can head to the funk(?) and groove of coverversion.
don't get me wrong, burn and stormbringer are ace, but in rock and fireball are the tits.
great band
Too many 'best ofs' to mention (and I've probably got most of them, yet another version of 'Mandrake Root' anyone?).
This one's a good little taster

James, why has this been posted in Blank Canvas, instead of the music room?

No home should be without Made In Japan.

You want 'Machine Head', 'In Rock' and 'Made In Japan'. Check out the DR database and try to get issues that are not red or orange http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/1?artist=deep+purple
There are a lot of compilations, some of which seem to be reasonably uncompressed. You must have bought one of the bad ones.
