Hi People
Next year is the WW 10th anniversary :)
I have spoken to Peter ( Mr WW ) re a AOS Room :eyebrows:

Any thoughts on how this might pan out?
It's a good idea and I'll certainly support it in any way I can. As a forum, we've exhibited an 'AoS system' three times at Scalford, and all three occasions were a huge success :)
Back then, the kit demonstrated was taken from systems belonging to the (then) mod team, but if we're going to exhibit an AoS system this time, I think all the kit should come from the membership, so we should collate together a list of kit from all members who'd like to submit something to the system, and then take it from there

My thoughts are as follows
If we get allocated a large room there is plenty of space for several systems :) Each exhibitor can have several 30 min slots then time for a walk about
We have on the Sunday about 6 hours time , But add 2 this Saturday evening / night for some AOS fun :D
Marco has said he will support in any way he can , " Thats the bar bill covered then " ;)

Indeed he did. But he forgot to mention that bar was only open for 30 seconds before doors opened

Nah, sorry, that doesn't interest me, but if it's what most want, then cool, go ahead.
What I had in mind is ONE 'AoS system' being demonstrated, which is made up of various components/speakers owned by the AoS membership, and which other components/speakers belonging to members could be slotted into at various stages throughout the day, so that everyone gets a chance of hearing their kit, but in a defined context.
That, for me, is potentially much more interesting, liable to be less chaotic, and easier organised.
Marco has said he will support in any way he can , " Thats the bar bill covered then " ;)
Lol - if this all goes ahead, I may drop a couple of hundred quid behind the bar for that purpose, so it's up to you guys to make it happen!

I've demonstrated at the Wam show and been in charge of rooms at real commercial shows. In reality I think you would find the '30 mins slot' a right royal PITA to do, and extremely tiring for all concerned. Bear in mind that when busy (which is most of the time) there isn't room to move in many rooms never mind shift gear about etc.

When was that, Mark, and was it with your own system? I always thought you were more the type to enjoy judging other people's systems than demonstrating your own :)

I can't see forum members wanting to bring one piece of kit
Isn't the idea to show off your system ?
One of the BIG rooms would easily accommodate 4 maybe 5 systems , that way each person can show his AOS system
Splitting the time is easy can't see it being a pitta
At the moment only Paul has shown any interest ,Time will tell ;)
Yes let's just see how things develop, and depending on how many folks are interested in taking part, we'll take it from there.
One thing to bear in mind, in terms of your question, is if there is lots of interest in doing this, then more people will get to hear *some* part of their system, rather than none, if everyone only brings one or two bits, rather than their whole system, as there simply won't be space to demo, say, 30-odd different systems, all in the one room, but in the course of the day we could demo 30-odd different bits of kit in the one (main) system.
Marco.
Your never going to get thirty people. Maybe half a dozen tops. Get one of the big rooms and set up the systems all round like we do at NEBO/MiBO. It is never a problem there.
Getting one of the decent ground floor rooms is paramount though. It won't work if you get stuck in one of the slave's quarters on the top floor.

Yes, but the key difference there is that those are invite-only events, not public shows, and so we only have folks attending from AoS and a few other locals to consider, not potentially 100s of members of the general public too, flooding in, as is the case at Scalford, which is why floor space will be at a premium.
Getting one of the decent ground floor rooms is paramount though. It won't work if you get stuck in one of the slave's quarters on the top floor.
Everyone will want one of those, though. And TBH, it's only fair that they should go to Wammers first before us. If this goes ahead, we'll probably just need to take whatever room we get.
Marco.
Unlike a NEBO meet, you are getting an ever changing audience and many will be disappointed, as sods law will inevitably mean the one bit of kit they wanted to hear, has had its slot and been and gone. This happens on two way room shares and would be more of a problem with many exhibitors.
A single fixed system has the limitation of the number of people that can join in. If a large room could be reserved then 3 or 4 set ups shown together and alternating might be the best solution to get more people involved, as they don't have to be single owner systems. With a bit of flexibility to change the running order if the visitors wanted to hear one set up in particular, this might work.
The type of display is not an easy thing to agree on. :)

Good point. However, it could be solved by (approximately) timed demos, advertised on the show literature, so for example if folks want to hear, say, a pair of your speakers, and those are due to be demo'd at 2pm, then it's up to them to be there to hear it :)
That would of course involve some organisation and diligence from those showing their kit, with respect to timekeeping. It all depends on how organised or 'organic'/spontaneous you want these things to be.
Marco.

Its doable, but three systems max. Each sits on one stand, has its own cables, mains distribution block and speakers. Switching then is just a case of turning the volume down on one up on another. Even the biggest room will only really comfortably permit that.
I know this because I have been part of an exhibition team at a number of commercial shows over the years. You can do it at both ends of a room, chairs facing one way and the other but this gets messy.
Trust me three max and its a doable proposition.

I wouldn't want to lug my complete set up to Scalford again, I am happy to bring my Denon DP80 with two spare removeable head shells so there could be a choice of three carts. My Stax arm is very versatile with regard to compliance of different carts. My weapon of choice is a Shure Ultra 500 with Martin Bastin body, so only requires an mm stage. Anyone else could bring their cart and step up or mc stage. It's early days so let's not throw the teddy in the corner just yet. There's almost a year to go and I may have some interesting speakers by then but happy to bring just the Denon. I did a similar thing a few years back when I took my 401 to Nick and Stuart's room and Jerry said the 401 stole the show.
I would like to be in but no way can I commit a year in advance, sorry man.
You can pencil me in especially if I can kip on the floor in the room, but I can't bring any kit on the train as it is all way too heavy.

if you take the room this year with 2 systems with wilsons and lV speakers
it was great to hear the 2 systems in use . I really enjoyed hearing the LV speakers with mr liang valve amp
it is perfectly possible to have a couple of systems and worked well in past

Ditto. If I am going (probably 80% certain), consider your transport there and back home sorted, and also some kit you'd like to bring - but you'd have to book a room at the hotel on the Saturday night and stay over to the sunday, as that's what I'd be doing :)
Marco.
I've been meaning to go for a while... I could bring my DAC and my USB front end.

Perhaps not the 'type' you thought then.
Lol - so when did you exhibit at Scalford, and was it with your complete system? I'd like to have heard that :)

Marco.
I think it was the second or third year - it was just prior to the launch of the RubiKon and Andrew had been asked if he wanted to demonstrate at the show. Andrew was just going to demo his system like any other Wamer but then [he who shall not be named] got wind and started whinining about trade sneaking in as non-trade - he was apparently showing that year and had to pay as a trade member. Anyway, the Wam boys didn't care but Andrew felt it only right he should pay and so we decided, as he was paying as trade, we should actively promote and demo the RuibiKon. We were given a nice large room in the main building (the one that had the Wilson WATT combo in this year). It was really busy and I got got to see the surrounding rooms myself (I don't think Andrew heard any other rooms). I have been asked since to show but it's such a logistical nightmare and I would rather wander round a hear all the rooms. Perhaps if I complete my turntable this year I will find sufficient motivation - who knows.
Ah, that's interesting... I must've missed it then, as I'd have been busy in our room demonstrating the AoS system at the time, featuring either my Tannoy Lockwood Majors or Celestion 66s (2nd and 3rd Scalford shows).
Yes, I remember that pish with 'he who shall not be named', as the system he demo'd at that show was dire. One of my two mates, who were with me, commented that the sound reminded him of a 1960s radiogram! :D
Anyway, if you do complete your turntable in time for next year's show it would be interesting to hear it
Marco.
I think an AoS room is an excellent idea ... again. The first year I went (2011?) The AoS room was, to my ears, the 'best in show', and is the reason I joined up. TBH, I'd never even heard of AoS, and had to ask what it was! The notion of putting a cheap DJ deck with Croft amps and 40 year old wardrobes seemed bizarre at first glance, and I almost walked straight out. Then the music started ....
Lol, Peter, was it one of those 'Bloody hell, WTF's going on here?' moments, which can sometimes change how you think about hi-fi? :eyebrows:
I can assure you that I experienced many of those building that system! :D
As AoS hadn't long been born, we were keen to showcase in public how good some vintage (and modified) new equipment can sound, marrying the best of old, with the best of new, but where also serious attention had been paid to system set up, in terms of equipment isolation, the mains, cable selection, etc.
And most importantly, that there *was* a viable alternative to simply just walking into a dealer and buying brand new 'off the shelf' kit (or the latest 'flavour of the month', advertised in the mags) - an approach that can usually offer superior SPPV (sound-per-pound value), and also long-term system satisfaction.
That is huge part of the AoS ethos, and it continues to this day :)
Here are some pics to remind you of the room in question....
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/K9zlIp.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poK9zlIpj)
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/vX0Vm0.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/povX0Vm0j)
I enjoyed that day very much, but didn't 'enjoy' lugging those speakers all the way down the stairs, from my listening room, and into the van we'd hired, and then after a long and uncomfortable drive, into the demo room at Scalford and back home again!!
That was a one-off occurrence, never again to be repeated! :nono:
Marco.

Hmm.. maybe it was the fourth year then because I heard both the AoS systems you describe. I remember it was all tied in with [banned named person] though and how frothy he got about the whole thing. I also remember hearing his demo and, as you say, it was widely considered as crap - even by his fan boys. The irony was that [banned named person] then chose to blame the room - the very same room that only a few weeks earlier he had been spouting on about and how he carefully chose it :).
I know. That was truly laughable! He's not known (amongst other things) as 'The Captain of Hypocrisy' for nothing!
Marco.
I think a certain other forum might be rather lively tonight. [emoji14]
Honestly, I couldn't care less - I won't see any of it.
Guys,
I've removed some non-constructive comments about details of the new direction being taken at Wigwam. I should also state that anyone with a negative agenda against WW or its new owner, found to be deliberately trolling or shit-stirring, will be banned without further warning.
Let's keep this discussion *solely* about the proposed AoS room at Scalford, or wherever the next venue may be. Cheers!

Well, i ended up dancing at Mibo ha ha. I would be happy to help man an AOS room should you require assistance. I didn't bother with Scalford this year for numerous reasons though i do think that some of the rooms should not be used for the purpose of setting up an audio system as they simply don't lend themselves well to the task. Am i correct in thinking that the event was a little more corporate this year?

Apparently so, Steve. I wasn't there, mate. Yeah, no show is complete without a dancing Floyddy! Noted on the offer of help, which is appreciated. We'll just need to see what happens.
As I understand it, there's a good chance that the next Wam show will be at a different venue.

Marco.i read on the wam that they already booked the show for 2018 at Scalford.
That may be the case, but my understanding is that they're looking for a better venue in future, in a more accessible location, with improved parking facilities and the removal of the (largely) unpopular park & ride system. Whether that happens in time for next year's show or not I guess is the question :)

That has been rumoured before due to the severe constraints of the rooms, and the P&R has understandably not helped, but the overriding mood I have picked up is that Scalford is Scalford and shall stay at Scalford. At least for 2018 and we really don't need to worry or speculate beyond that. Especially given that this year's show was rated as the best yet by many I have spoken with/engaged with.
No worries. I'm happy for that to happen, if that's the case. It's got nothing to do with me.
I'm simply reporting what was suggested to me in a conversation with the main man. Like with many things, one's intentions don't always come to fruition :)

The change of ownership of wigwam has seen many changes I haven't liked much and the reason I joined here and don't post there much. Exhibitors booking rooms this early after the show is out of order imo, it leaves little chance for others to get the opportunity to exhibit nearer the time. That's their business of course but the reason I haven't been the last two years. Doesn't look likely we'll get a room next year anyway.

Is the change of ownership something you object to in principle, or is there something specific you can point to in the tenor of the forum which you don't like? Rhetorical question, as we don't want to get into other-forum-bashing. I'm a Wammer too, but if I ignore the trimmings (WamTV and the like), the forum feels very much like the forum has always felt.
I can't see any connection between the change of ownership and exhibitors booking 2018 rooms early. In fact, Wammers are an independent-minded bunch, so the reason so many are keen to book their 2018 slots might be that 2017 appears to have been received as one of the best yet (whether despite or because of the change of ownership, who's to know?).
I'm sure an AoS room would be welcomed, but this forum would need to get the commitment from enough folk to be able to make a booking with confidence. Which I think is the main point of this thread.

I can assure you that there are plenty of Wammers with their names down for 2018 who have exhibited many times before and would be more than happy to step aside to make room for others who have not - myself included. If you don't put your name down at all, then you're never going to get to exhibit!

I think you'll find that's an objection based on principle. It's not about how the site functions, it's about its driving objective. There's nothing wrong with disliking that, but it is a dislike based on principle not practice surely. Unless there are specific elements of how the site now works which differ from those in the past and it's these aspects you dislike.

ww now seems to be a business with a forum attached.

Does this make you more or less interested in contributing to an AoS room?

And whats the problem with that ? or is the owner supposed to pay for everything himself at a loss to keep forum members happy ?
If you don't want the commercial side just use the forum

I think it's another objection in principle, Al. Forums should be for the people by the people and all that. Oh and free at the point of use. So of course the forum owner should run it at a loss! [emoji6]

Well that's true, that's precisely what it is. However, if you looked beneath the surface a little James was attempting to do much the same years before he eventually sold the Wam. I can't see any inherent problem with it being a forum attached to a business though - pfm is and it doesn't seem to do it any harm.
I don't post much on the Wam these days but not because of the ownership change (not directly at any rate) - I just don't see many threads that interest me.
We are drifting too much from the topic...

Well... I probably wouldn't do it here, if the fees taken from traders didn't pay for the running of the forum (a fairly costly thing these days with a forum of this size or similar, if you want to do it right without skimping on important areas), so although I don't make a profit, running this place is not costing me anything either - other than sometimes my sanity [what little there was of it to start with] ;)
Peter's entitled to run Wigwam in the best way he sees fit, and so there's nothing wrong with wanting to see a return on his investment. My attitude might have been different too, if I'd bought AoS for what Peter paid for Wigwam.....

FYI, hold over one word for a second or so. Option comes up to Select, Select All or Paste - try Select. You get a blue "lollipop" at each end of the word which you can drag to select more text in either direction. Fuller menu then offers you options to cut, copy or whatever. Then just place your cursor wherever you want to insert your text, hold for a second, menu pops up, select Paste.
This has been a public service broadcast.

So has this thread died a death due to lack of interest or some other reason
Lol... The main reason, as far as I'm concerned, is that (following my ban from Wigwam and disagreement with Peter, some of which I admit was my fault), I no longer have any interest in carrying out the original plan, coupled with the fact that I've largely lost interest in attending hi-fi shows in general, unless they focus mainly on the analogue (T/T) and vintage side of things.
However, that's not stopping anyone else from carrying on with the plan for said AoS room, and good luck with that if they do!
Marco.
Turns out I'm less than an hour away from Scalford so while not "exhibiting" I shall probably cruise over for a giggle.
Exactly where and when is this momentous occasion so that I can check the bible for suitable ale?

Thinking back to last year and the paying for a room even if you didn't want to stay, the park and ride and all the other bullshit I think I'll pass.
