Since I mentioned that I had been thinking about starting this thread, it falls to me to actually kick it off.

What I have in mind is those records in your collection which have low or zero ‘street creditability’; the sort of thing that you bought to remind you of a time and place in your life and/or that you simply enjoy listening to, although you may be in a minority of one.

I’ll start things off, in no particular order (since they were pulled from different parts of my collection) we have:

Diamond Head The White Album Actually a lot of underground creadability due to the Metallica connection but so much part of my youth just felt should be included
I do not have a lot of mainstream music in my collection

I love cheesy pop; done right there's nothing that can lift the spirits and warm the heart more than a bit of cheese.

Thanks for saying that Neil. I do enjoy listening to them and think that some of them are very good. What I was trying to suggest is that whilst I'm not excrutiatingly embarrassed by these titles, I don't think that any of them would have much creditability amongst record collectors.

I'm sure I do have some material (recorded on cassette) that I would prefer to keep quiet about (mostly ephemeral '80s pop: Altered Images, Bow Wow Wow, Marmalade etc.), but I rarely play cassettes these days.

It was never my intention to be judgemental or critical of other peoples submissions, just that everyone I know has his or her own little pile of discs that they enjoy, despite being a bit 'naff'. After all the purpose of these records is to give you pleasure and that of course is highly personal. If listening to say the 'Birdy Song' reminds you of a particularly memorable holiday then there is nothing wrong with that.

A cheap album of Christmas carols played in the style of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass, but not by them, obviously.

Not only that, but it's on the legendary Music for Pleasure label. I kid you not, this was bought for me the year it came out (1968) and I think it was my very first LP - I would have been 2 years old (just) at the time. Since then, it's been an integral part of the family's Christmas celebrations and we play it every year without fail while putting up the Christmas decorations.

The first track on each side has a spot about halfway through that crackles like a bowl of coco-pops (obviously some heavy-handed handling back in the days of mum and dad's old Philips Diamond mono record player!). However, the rest of it plays really well for all of its 40+ years.

And getting ready for Christmas would never be the same without it!

Thankfully I don’t have any of that ghastly rubbish on my hard drive.
I’ve always had excellent musical taste preferring to sit down with a nice glass of claret in order to appreciate every nuance and harmonic detail that flows from my wonderfully transparent sound reproduction system.
I must confess, I did have some “pop” I collected in my youth before I came to understand the intricacies and harmonies of better presented works but thanks to a recent clear out most of that sort of produced for the masses drivel has gone.

I did have a moments regret when I erased Emerson Lake and Palmer to make way for Pinks Greatest Hits.
It didn’t take much thought though to delete Yes Fragile in order to make room for James Blunt.
All my Dire Straights albums went to be replaced by my Scissor Sisters collection.
I was a bit sad to see my copy of Edgar Broughtons Band Out Skinheads Out retire to storage but hey, it was all such a long time ago wasn’t it and lots of nice chaps have those haircuts now. Not to worry though Salt n Peppers greatest hits along with NWA Straight Outa Compton more than makes up for the loss (alwayss thought it a shame white people can’t make this sort of music but I suppose its genetic)
My Camel recordings from Watford Town Hall went. Well, we got let down by the local rugby club who had promised to appear and do a “dirty ditties” turn and Camel was all we could get at short notice at the time. Still, it has meant I can squeeze a couple of Sugar Babes tracks on and of course my selection of Spice Girls music.

I certainly wouldn’t describe myself as a snob of any kind. I just have taste, comes with being white, middle aged and comparatively well off I suppose. I’ve never really understood this dancing business; I mean, all that energy and sexuality on display, it’s just not British is it.

Since I mentioned that I had been thinking about starting this thread, it falls to me to actually kick it off.

What I have in mind is those records in your collection which have low or zero ‘street creditability’; the sort of thing that you bought to remind you of a time and place in your life and/or that you simply enjoy listening to, although you may be in a minority of one.

Ive always been overly conscious of street cred when buying music. I wouldnt dare tell my two tone and punk mates as a teenager that i was going through a Genesis faze.
I did recently buy Abba Arrival when it came out as a vinyl reissue, just for old times sake. :o

The real skeletons are those that are dismissed by those who think themselves real music fans, maybe because they sniffed a bit of popular acclaim at some point. I name Aswad - fantastic, honest, early UK reggae, or Marillion - their Fish stuff is fantastic and certainly wasn't designed to top charts at the time, they just happened to.

There are those who seem to always love the 'bands that could have been The Beatles' but would never admit to liking The Beatles, you know the sort!

I guess sometimes you get bands who are lauded as the zeitgeist, who people could dismiss as being overrated, but that's not necessarily their fault, maybe the fault of the reviewer trying to pin their credibility on the next big thing. It's best to set aside all that stuff and listen without prejudice. Now there's a skeleton in the closet :)

A good example seems to be Dire Straits. It's popular for them to be criticised by all and sundry, or to be treated as 'not cool'. What I hear is a very talented band with some superb and memorable songs, excellently played.

Yes, I think I once had a couple of Altered Images LPs. Only a year or so ago, whilst having a bit of a clear out, I recorded the tracks that I liked and gave the LPs away.

Don't feel bad - this is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for when started this thread. If you enjoy it then that's all that matters, but like you there are perhaps some titles we all have that are secret and guilty pleasures. :)
