Well?
Some appearing on the wam since yesterday. I'll post a pic of the aftermath of stripping down my entire system for the show and the massive pile it's now become in the middle of my lounge floor. Too knackered to do anything about it tonight, and maybe tomorrow too.
I'd like to extend a thank you to anyone that attended or exhibited at the show this year. It's a weekend of graft done for the hell of it and the visitors make it all worthwhile. Cancer Research did pretty well out of it too!
See you all next year!

Great to finally meet up with you yesterday at the show Al :D
There were some superb sounds in most of the rooms, I did notice that the systems with Class A amps, valve and solid state, had a real purity to the sound.
A lot of valve amps in evidence, all the good ones had mahoosive transformers on them :stalks:
A good day was had by myself and 'Mrs Firebottle' and it was good to meet some old and new faces.

Didn't take a camera Steve, was kept busy playing music and missed most of the rest of the show, heard about 5 rooms that's all, didn't even get a break for Lunch.
That's why we (as AoS) stopped exhibiting. It's fun for a bit, but if you've got a room (and kit) to look after, you certainly don't get the chance to go round and enjoy the rest of the show properly.
The only way that happens, to some extent, is if you stay over at the venue the night before and manage to listen to the other systems there being set up, in advance of the public coming in the following day.
It's the only way I'd entertain doing it again, as the banter with everyone is good on the Saturday night (plus you get to park your car in a decent place next to the hotel), and as an exhibitor, it's really too much of a rush (and stressful) any other way.
Anyway, it's good to hear that those who went (and also exhibited) had a good time! :cool:

I wasn't there this year.
But the forum took over the Bring & Buy idea and held it in the main show pavilion.
This year they expanded it a bit and you could take stuff along for private as well as charity sale.

Don't get me wrong Marco, I did enjoy it, but bloody hard work.
Gordon (Halfway Tree) shared a larger exhibiting room with me, so we went down on the Saturday.
We had a stinker of a room acoustically and spent a long time into the evening, setting up and trying to make the most of it.
Ran a sweep on the room and it was fine 170Hz up, pretty flat with a gentle roll off at the top. Below 170hz it was peaks and troughs with many phase changes, had a wide and deep dip at 50Hz and a large peak below that. We tried everything we could but Gordon's Linkwitz LX521 OB's just wouldn't work in the room, so he didn't show them in the end.
The room (Syndicate3) is a small training room on the first floor and is squarish with painted plaster walls and a wooden floor, a large white board on one side wall and a flat screen telly on the back wall. It was so bright and echoey.
My semi active system faired better, but still needed careful positioning, far enough into the corners to get some bass room reinforcement, but not so far as to cause boom and create a confused top end. I turned the sealed cabinets upside down so the bass drivers were well above the floor and put them on small wooden pucks which all seemed to help, the mid/treble were in a separate cabinet sat on top (work in progress). Got plenty of complementary comments, so it must of come across ok, and having a few bodies in there helped tame it a bit, I think there were 16 people at one point.
My stylus/cantilever had fallen out of my cartridge a week before the show, but the hurried replacement (pre owned Ortofon MC20 Supreme) worked well. It seemed to improve as the day went on, maybe it had been stored for a while and the suspension needed to break in again, but the system as a whole was sounding quite nice by the end of the day considering the rooms limitations. :)

Qwin, I saw your lanyard many times but never got the chance to say hi. What you describe is the very essence of what Scalford is all about. You took your stuff into a strange reflective room with peaks and troughs and you battled the odds to make it work for the visitors. Bravo that man and I'll see you next year, hopefully with a few AoS buddies that play it safe behind a keyboard.:)

Believe me Al, you would not have wanted to listen to the LX521's, it was pretty awful. Which is a pity, because they are the most open natural sounding speaker I have heard, at any price. It was a tough decision and many people came to the room hoping to hear them, but they would have been very disappointed and maybe put off them, so Gordon stood them down.

I usually go to the Scalford show with three other friends (if one or more is not already showing), but this year, for a number of reasons, only one of my friends was free to visit the show with me. We still had a great time though and the 'amateur' demonstrators really put the 'professionals' to shame - well organised and super friendly and welcoming. In contrast the pros were their usual rather aloof and standoffish. It was a shame that some of the more extreme exhibitors were missing this year but there was still a lot to see and listen to.
The two rooms using stand mount JBL's stood out for me and neither sounded at all vintage.
ken (Qwin), I'm afraid your speaker experiment, although interesting, left me more bemused than convinced. Sorry - but it was interesting.
The Linn demo and workshop were interesting.
I took a photo in every room (I hope) and intend to do a write up if I have time.
Being a busy bunny I also went to the Stylus Vinyl Show in Manchester (saw Marco there briefly - Hi :)) - this was a really quiet show, a couple of interesting exhibits.

It was a lash up for the show Mark, I don't intend using the Yamaha bass units and it will all be in a single cabinet. I'm developing between shows, so it was at an in-between changes stage. Got NEBO in May and I'm hoping to have 12" Scanspeak bass drivers, which are sat in my bedroom, in some form of cabinet by then. After that comes a change from active analogue to digital crossovers, so it was by no means an end product, just the point where I'm at on the learning curve. ;)

The 'Sony room' looks like it was a sight worth seeing.
I think Steve means pictures of the show taken by AoS members, not those belonging to someone elsewhere. If only Justin had went to Scalford and produced the results he did with the Bristol show...

You got a couple of nice shots of my turntable, thanks. They make me realise though that the Grado cartridge looks grubby and should be cleaned before it appears in pubic again

I'm going to try and expand the amount of rooms available at the Hotel and perhaps dedicate a section to AoS if there is enough interest as I will invite other forums to do also. Although it has always been HFWW I think we all know its about showing HiFi and as far as I'm concerned 'everyone' is totally welcome. So for those of you who haven't seen the thread please get your names down to exhibit next year. Thank you.

Can you do a park and ride from Stoke-on Trent so I can come along? ;) Place is a right pain in the arse to get to and from by train in one day, and because the show is on you can't stay overnight in the hotel itself.

Oh yes you can , and there were a couple of rooms going spare

That is what I have done the last 6 times , I've never exhibited , only one year was I very close to not getting a room , could be like that next year though the exhibitors 2018 thread has already started.

Criticism is unfair imo considering the circumstances. If you haven't got something nice to stay its better not to say anything unless the owner asks for an opinion.
If the owner is going to exhibit it publicly then he has to expect that there will be comments made. I mean what are we, fragile little children who have to be protected from criticism? I bet he would not be at all bothered and would be grateful for any constructive comments.

Seriously don't understand why anyone would be precious about their system. I'd rather have people tell me what is wrong with it than just tell me it is good. I have a pal who will come round and give his honest verdict for me anytime I ask him to. Invaluable. Too easy to kid yourself on in this game.

I've followed the construction thread on the Wam and it's very interesting and promising. However, as I understand it, they are a work in progress and that is how they sounded to me - and for the reasons given.
Many thanks Marco et al., you are correct in you interpretation of my intent; I'm sorry that it should be construed otherwise, apologies for the confusion.

I was stood right at the back, back to the window. I never listened in any of the seated positions, maybe that was the difference.

Thanks for the JBL feedback. We had a very positive response and at one time, had people on chairs, the floor and the sides of the room and every single one was a repeat visitor! By this time the orange grilles had left the room!
Please introduce yourself next time; it's nice to put a name and face to a username.

Maybe you should find another venue ? There used to be a yearly group meet north but that was mostly DIY based systems and certainly no Trade demos. Does not need to be huge and time it at the other end of the year. An AOS Show.

Yes, we (the mods and members) have discussed that idea on many occasions, but it takes a lot of time and organising to do it right, which unfortunately most of us don't have.
Maybe one day? :)

Your system sounded very good! I remember asking you about the Marantz CD63 KI where you replied that there's an easy mod to improved the sound significantly - something about cutting a PCB track - do you have reference of this anywhere?
