Best Speaker match for Marantz PM4

Hi Guys

I'm collecting the PM4 later on today :D:eek:

Just wondering which speakers best suit the efficiently...options are below

Audio Note ANJ/D - My choice - :)

I reviewed the Pm-4 for Hi-Fi Answers back in 1983 (PM me if you want a copy). I used Celestion SL6 speakers without trouble over replay level in a fairly big listening room. In 1999 I was 'exiled' to the States and wanted a system of reasonable quality for my den. I borrowed a Pm-4 from a chum and used this across a long room with a pair of Acoustic Energy AE-1s fed by a modded Marantz CD-65SE - a blissful system that I spent many happy hours listening to - though admittedly I wasn't listening to thrash metal or organ recitals.

Of the speakers you list the Tannoys would be my first port of call having used a Pm-4 with 609s very successfully.

It's one of my desert island products - you're lucky indeed - enjoy.

The Tannoy DC1000 are a hoot to use and will suit the PM-4 just fine. These Tannoys may not exactly be neutral, but they image brilliantly and go louder than any speaker that size has any right to! I prefer the DC1000 to the larger DC2000/3000 models.

Tannoy Berkeley - a friend of mine feeds them with PM-5, just heard it the other evening. Stupidly good sound for that money (under 1,5k or so)

Hi Dan ! I had a pm4 some years ago and I thought it was absolutely great, my son Marco owns it now and he has a pair of linn kahbers on the end of it with a rell q50 sub belive it or not it's a very good match and sounds very good .If you fancy tannoys the dc 1000,2000 or 3000 will sound very good indeed

surprised it will work well with Kabers. Only 15 watts in class A and that is probably optimistic. I suppose if you don't need to crank it will manage.

You want a speaker that is sensitive and a fairly easy load to get the best out of it. 'Kabuki' speakers should be a good match. Or Wharfedale E series. Or if you want to get spendy some classic JBL - Century L100 would be my pick, about the right era too.

Yeah. OK as party speakers, but coloured and ragged at the top.

off the pace nowadays I agree but there are plenty of speakers I prefer them to. They are good fun and will match the Marantz (in class A) well I reckon. Get that 'West Coast' sound going on :)

Yup. A mate had some... for about a week before he got shot of 'em. I remember us both kind of scratching our heads and comments like "and these cost how much new?". They go loud, in a screechy sort of way, and the bass is pretty good but I really can't think of anything else positive to say about them... They sound like PA speakers to me.

I'm sure a pair of Tannoy Westminster Royals would provide more than adequate volume and room filling.... they are... I mean sound :D

No longer mine guys - Now my dads pair with a pair of B&O S60's - Technics SL-120 - SME 3009 S2 he's happy enough...:)

Yes it is surprising that they work with kabers, but you do need the rell with them, I am not a fan of the linns but the synergy is very good.
A suggestion that I have is (if you can find a pair) mordant short signifiers an unsung hero that has been forgotten about.

Oh I don't know - they are one of the few JBL speakers I could listen to. Best suspended from the ceiling a la studio.

Has anyone on this Forum tried the PM4 amplifier with LS3/5as ?
I can imagine the two would work very well together.

I have heard that ns1000's are a really good pm4 match.

Similarly, jbl or British 3 ways of the period are likely to offer the more forgiving load that the pm4 is most suited to.
