Having recently bought a Croft Micro preamp from a member on this forum I'm now looking for a NOS ECC82 valve . I'm new to this valve rolling malarkey so will have to do a bit of research on what's on offer . Thanks :)

Which generation and level of micro is it? With my basic I didn't like a mullard as it was too soft and mellow I preferred a more upfront (but not harsh) valve. I think a tesla/russian or us milspec valve would.work, or if its a more upmarket model then maybe a telefunken or siemens?

Less than a year old I believe .

As always it's down to personal preference but from my experience I can highly recommend Tungsram for ECC82's and they are very reasonably priced too ...
Try and find one from 1960's production. I believe the ones with red printing are mil spec.

Don't you want E82CC valves in the preamp? ;)

Hi Brian,

Nigel
Thanks Nigel but I would rather buy one outright as I'm not keen on these things being in the postal system too long .

An E82CC is a better quality valve than an ECC82

Hi Brian,
I didn't want anything for it, but no worries I will stick it on eBay.

Sorry Nigel , I misunderstood . When you said I could try it I thought that you wanted it back . I just didn't want a valuable valve being posted multiple times with the risk of damage .
If the offer is still open I would be happy to accept your generous offer , pay the postage , and put something into a charity box for you . Thanks .

I've a Mazda in the draw Brian that you can have, but I imagine the telefunken is a better valve.

PM your addy if you want it :)

Thanks Alan , I wouldn't mind a few to try as I've read they can all sound very different .

See post #10 :facepull:

An E82CC is exactly the same as an ECC82 mate, just a higher spec, higher quality.

It was bought late last summer Brian.

I never opened it up, so it will still have the original valves in it.

Thanks for the information Adam . I'm very pleased with the preamp . It sounds fantastic and is in pristine condition , just like you said . I've been told that there's a ( reasonably cheap ) upgrade to be had by upgrading the valve , so I may as well try this route as long as things don't go mad :)

I recall from a conversation a while ago, possibly with Glenn himself, that the micros were voiced to get the best out of the common and cheap JJ valves, so bear this in mind when doing some rolling, ie the benefits may not be as great as you get with amps that just have a "random" valve fitted.

Thanks Lawrence , I'll keep that in mind sir :)

Bit late to this one, sorry Brian. I think that you'll highly enjoy the Croft pre-amp, it was the first one I owned before moving onto the Epoch. Valve rolling in this amp can make a big difference with respect to what you hear. I swapped my Ecc82 for a Mullard and noticed an immediate improvement. The JJ ECC82 is the standard valve which Glenn fits and is exactly the same one that I replaced with the Mullard. Have fun.

Thanks Andy , I'm sitting listening as I write this and I'm well pleased :D

I'm really looking forward to trying out a few different valves though :)
