That includes a monthly bonus. And the advertised rate is the top of the range. I imagine most qualified engineers would want more. Good job for a school leaver who wants to learn a trade even at the lower rate. But do they still exist? Maybe these jobs get filled mostly by EU nationals now.

I figure that's about right.

What planet are you lot on? A fully qualified Junior Staff Nurse after 3years at Uni (with about 8 - 12,000 in student loans) only starts off on just over 21,000 p/a.

What's on offer at the top end of his scale is barely a labourers rate in London right now. I have trouble getting people to turn up at all for that money and have to pay more for anyone I'd actually want to use.

Unfortunately jobs in health care have always been poorly paid.
What's a copper start on now? I don't think it is much more. And that's shifts and dealing with knobends all day.

Have been doing roughly 'that' job for nigh on 30 years now, that's a 'reasonable' rate for this industry.
You lot buy your expensive Hi-Fi but you won't pay to get it fixed !!! ;)

never was well paid for the individuals, unlike plumbers and joiners etc. It was always a bit like it was not a proper trade in this country. ulike most other places I might add who embraced their engineers and held them in high esteem.

that is SPOT on, would have been my desire as a lad but realised that to make money as an engineer you'd have to leave the UK

As I said above, I've been doing this now nearly 30 years and I'm on not much more. The Domestic Electronics Service Industry has always been looked down upon by the end users of the equipment and as a necessary evil by the Manufacturers. ''...our products don't go wrong so why do we need an expensive Service Dept...''.
I think the mindset stems from it all coming from a 'hobby'. Starting with 'Wireless' and then early TV the hobby-ist built their own and therefore fixed it in their shed if it went wrong. They would do it for their neighbours too.
So if a bloke in his shed can do it, why can't I? So that mentality persists I think even with todays modern, complicated gear. You (generalising here) all think ''..I'll have a go..'' and we who train for years how to do it at a professional level don't get the recognition we deserve.
Rant over, sorry guys !! Sore spot !! ;)

I got more respect as a retired electronics engineer in France than I ever got as a working one in the UK.

As an engineer I realised, after trying different specialisations, that the remuneration was never going to be what I needed.
Met someone at a social occasion, who outlined that IT was where the money was. Did some research and registered to do Contract work.
What an eye opener, started going 6 month contracts, wherever in the world, I was offered.
Started a Limited Liability Company.
The rewards can be staggering, £1000 per day not unusual.
You also learn how to minimise your tax burden.
As an engineer I realised, after trying different specialisations, that the remuneration was never going to be what I needed.

It's the same here in Greece.
Most repair work is done by underpaid "technicians" with obscure backgrounds. And not because of the depression. It was like that even before.
And yes engineers get no respect here either. Our local heavy industry was killed-off in a few months back in the 80s. And engineers ended up in the same bin with the above mentioned "technicians".
The only way to get decent money as an engineer is to migrate to Germany.
