Anyone else read about this?
I have a Samsung Smart TV, but dont use any of the online stuff.
Went deep into the settings and was genuinely taken back by the ammount of Consent tickboxes for 3rd party data companies which were ticked by default.
Including the voice control built into the telly....reading the long Terms and Conditions for that was a doozy. :eek:
'You consent to your understanding that sensitive or private information picked up by the system may be inadvertantly sent to various 3rd parties."
...Spent 10 minutes unticking every consent box I could find.
Yeah, i was reading that yesterday Gary. Guess its modern day life. Everyone is spying on everyone. Somehow i doubt they would be interested in my wind breaking excersises :D

Where are the millions of people that would be needed full time to intelligently monitor the other millions using smart devices? They don't exist! Computerised monitoring would have to be very specific as to what it looked for. Any surveillance would need to be targeted very directly at subjects of interest or it would have too little discrimination to be of much use.
The smart device thing would just add to what goes on now. Full time spying on communications has been going on for years in any case. There are aircraft flying over areas of interest every day, more or less all day long, surveilling WiFi, radio and other communications signals. There are such planes based at RAF Northolt in west London. If you know what to look for they are easy to spot. It's no conspiracy theory nonsense either. It's happening.

None of my tvs are smart either. Ive got apple and amazon tv but not sure they can do much bar show what i watch etc, . Stick something over a webcam is a wise thing..they can be vurnerable, if your worried. Dare say they will get more info from messages etc on phones, although ios and google say they wont cooperate with gov depts re allowing access. Your internet supplier has to keep 6 months of your usage by law i think so thats going to be of more use maybe.

But I wonder how many people would have bought their Samsung TV if they knew about this beforehand? I certainly wouldn't (I personally wouldn't buy a Samsung anyway), as your home should be the one place where you shouldn't have to worry about prying eyes and violations of your privacy. Personally, I think this is wrong on a massive scale. I know this sort of thing goes on on a daily basis in other areas of our lives, but if you're out in public, you expect (and accept) cameras, you expect to be vulnerable and open to scrutiny, and maybe even where you work, but not in your own home.
If your up to no good then you need to be careful, there are always ways around surveillance.
Otherwise what does it matter? Any hidden microphone in my house would only pick up the telly or the stereo. Or me talking to the cat, when I had a cat.
He rarely talked back, mind. I wonder if he knew something?
Anyway apart from improving some CIA operative's taste in music I can't see what the benefit to them or indeed the problem for me would be.

True, Gaz, true. But I don't personally believe in the concept of having the 'right' to anything. We have what we can take, and what we can keep others from taking from us. That's it. Everything else is words on a document or in a book and they are sod all use when someone is breaking your rice bowl.

What's ripping me is that People have fought and died to build a Society which doesn't run on the "dog eat dog" philosophy...and that seems to be being slowly and isidiously eroded.
Historically these things are cyclical I guess, maybe we are just approaching the end of this one?

That's why I don't use WiFi anymore. In the area I live in I can pick up over 300 other routers. I'm sure they can see mine too. I use my phone tethered to my laptop when I'm mobile. It's still not 100% secure, but you can't hack it with a $30 WiFi adapter.
I've assumed the government can see anything I do online since the 80's. They've been monitoring telecom microwave links forever.
I don't think it's right, but I'm more worried about the ease with which anyone outside of the government can do it now.
That said. I've been sending death metal to my neighbor's TV for a few years when he gets drunk and starts screaming.

Your politics in America and ours here, are largely a facade. The real power lies elswhere. Politicians and their parties are just there to give us something to vote for in the expectation that people will think naively they have some sort of control over what actually will happen. They don't. All slaves really!!

I'm not, but I've worked really hard to free myself of it. The government is just something that takes half of my paycheck. Otherwise it's just a terrible TV show.
I work in the elsewhere industry too. I have a front row seat to it all.

Its a sad indictment on the human race, considering where we could and should have been after the war to end all wars should have left us, but for the money men who wouldnt have it.

They'll probably pull eminent domain and turn the cabin into a resort after I move in. They already did it to my old shop. It's a yuppie strip mall now. Complete with a Starbucks.
Lol.... not even good coffee :(. Better with the Indians any day.
My new one is about a block and a half away from being regentrified. I had it declared historic, so I should get a better payday on that one. I've bought four properties from the city for back taxes. 3 have been taken back and sold to developers. 2 of those burned down shortly afterwards and are empty lots now. I made money on all of them but not what they were worth.

The wall is going to be a disaster. Mexicans are pretty resourceful, and they don't mind working hard. It's not going to keep anyone out, and we would lose a lot of excellent workers if it did. Most of the people who are for the wall are in areas that don't even have a Mexican population. They appreciate the freedoms we have here more than the majority of "natives" from Europe. People from India and Pakistan do as well. They come here and buy run down businesses in bad parts of town that nobody wants and end up wealthy. I haven't seen many white people fighting to own liquor stores in the ghetto that require keeping an AK behind the counter.

I'd have a flamethrower, build it into the counter. Someone starts robbing you, just hit the switch and whoosh! - they're barbeque.
Shop would smell bad for quite a while after, though.
They're behind bullet proof glass anyway so I think it's mostly for intimidation. The stock is a loophole they used in the 90s when AKs with pistol grips weren't allowed unless they had a certain number of American parts installed. It was a stupid law, and didn't make the rifle any less deadly. I never heard of anyone ever having their rifle inspected. It has been repealed.
I prefer the .357. If I need a 30 round mag, I'm probably at a disadvantage that I should run from. I have an AK. I only keep it because it's the root of all evil in the eyes of the anti-virus crowd.
We had someone unload into a car next to them on the street last week, and not injure anyone. Someone caught it on a dash cam. I don't know how nobody got hurt.

Shooting an AK out of a car window isn't as easy as it looks in the movies. It gets shells all over the car too. It's probably good most of the criminals have bad aim, or the murder rate would be insane. It's bad enough already.

The small town I grew up in celebrated Bushwhacker Days over the Labor Day weekend. They just call it Community Days now. It's becoming lost history now. They don't teach it anymore. Most people my age don't really know much about the border wars other than that movie with Toby McGuire in it.

I'd assumed you were in the Kansas City in Kansas. That must cause some confusion. We have terrible trouble with people mixing up Bangor in Wales with Bangor in Northern Ireland.
They are kinda side by side i think martin or at least very close. Think the kansas one was the more historic .... be great place to visit as long as you had someone taking you round. Think you could otherwise end up in a mix lol. Not a huge population but maybe Gladgow size
Most of the historic areas are on the Missouri side now. Some were originally in Kansas. Where I'm at is about 3/4 of a mile from the border. It's a really spread out city. It's in 5 different counties. I'm in Westport, but it's incorporated into Kansas City now. Independence and Westport were the oldest settlements. Westport has been part of both states at different times. Independence is still it's own city. Home of Harry Truman. There are a lot of historic areas that are in the middle of war-zones now. Swope Park is actually bigger than Central Park in New York, but I wouldn't go there as a tourist. Liberty Memorial and the WWI museum are both top notch places to visit. The Jazz district is excellent too, but it's surrounded by the most dangerous part of town. This isn't a city that you can just stroll around in and find stuff to do. You have to know where the pockets are. There is a lot of history here that most of the natives don't even know about.
I don't think I've ever been to a concert where the singer didn't scream something about being in Kansas to start the show. There is a lot of confusion.
Thought that. One of those places you need taken round. Glasgow city is only 600,000 now but greater area is 1.2 mil. Theres a few parts you dont want to get lost in here too, although unlikely to get AK47,ed lol
Statistically you're pretty safe if you're white, unless you're a cop. That's bad to say, but it's true. Panhandling is a popular career here so you have to watch out for those guys. They can be aggressive but they back off pretty quickly if you aren't intimidated. Then there's the guys on PCP. They're wild cards. There's plenty of YouTube videos of those guys in the city.
I'd like to visit Glasgow. I've been to Ireland, but never Scotland. I'd really like to see the New Year's celebration.

Edinburgh does a big one at and around Princes St and Castle Nathan. Its only 20 mls away. Glasgows not much further tbh. Im bang in middle and theres a train and motorway link. Not that i go.. not a city boy these days, but liked both when younger. Both nice cities in their respective ways, as is Stirling and Perth really. We dont have a big population.. 6 mil but a better way of life than England imv. Not as crowded
I might make the trip this year. I've wanted to do it for a long time. It looks like a beautiful country. I'm not really a city person either. I just live here because I hated the commute. I can walk to work instead of sitting in the car for 45 minutes to an hour to travel 10 miles. I could get some proper scotch while I was there too.
The New Year's celebration looks pretty wild.

I don't mind the cold until it gets really cold. I'm usually in an unzipped jacket until it hits about -10° C. The heat and humidity wipes me out. Most of last summer was in the mid 30s and humid as hell. It about did me in.
You will fit in here fine...hope you like rain lol it does a lot of that here. We aint ever short of water for the whisky :)
