Sounds like the amp is transistorised so maybe the voltage isn't 250. Creating a big crack on discharge is more fun anyway.

It has a valve tuner. The transistors have 37V rails, but those caps have 250V to them. The valves are running at 120V. It's an interesting receiver. It has separate step down transformers for all of the different stages.

As for the screwdriver it rather pales into insignificance compared to the dumbo who used a big spanner to check if the bus bars down a South African gold mine were live :eek:

My Grandpa always used a giant screwdriver like it was a multimeter. Getting shocked never seemed to phase him either. I don't think I ever saw him use the right tool to do anything, but he always fixed everything.
