Been a decent day today. Cold but sunny mostly.
Not bad day here at least got a cycle in before rain came.
nice enoug today but got bitter cold in afternoon
Heavy rain all night and all day. Still going now.
Been wet and overcast today. Needed lights on main rd. rain stopped but its miseable
Saw several race cyclists going down the dual carriageway in black lycra, and no lights. Dangerous with lights on and reflective gear, far less today. About time fast rds were off limits to slow traffic like bikes. I would never have gone on that rd when i cycled.

You see it round here too. Cycling on a duel carriageway at rush hour in the dark and the rain. They are out of their tiny minds.

Started off dull and raining. Sun is out now and it's getting warmer.
Still raining here. It has now rained for 3 days pretty much non-stop.
Quite mild though so not complaining.
Been wet but dry at moment. Still cold though and had to put fire on this morning. Could be worse though. Need a new battery i think doh.. never rains eh?

Nice day so far. Bright, dry and reasonably mild. I may do some work outside today.
Beautiful sunny, spring-like day here today in Wrexham, which is quite a contrast to the snow we had yesterday! Just back from my daily 6-mile power walk, and feel great. Now into the shower, get changed and ready soon for some lunch :)
I'll also be doing some (much needed) gardening later, and since it's nice outside, will take the opportunity of filling up the skip we've hired for clearing the kitchen with some old shite that's been lying round the back of the yard for ages!
Then later it'll be chillout time to some choons :cool:

Sunny here too. Bit colder than yesterday too. Have also had a shower ( religious about that, once a week whether I need it or not).
Need to go out in a bit, don't really want to.
Marco, don't you get bored walking 6 miles a day? That's my walk home from work, the distance is no big deal but it's the same every time. Even pass the same people at the same spots. There's one bloke always got a spliff on the go, I know when he's round the corner 'cause you can smell it for a mile in all directions. Always makes me laugh.

Nope, as the walk is always different. Fortunately, round here there are umpteen (beautifully kept) parks and nice quiet, leafy areas to explore. I enjoy looking at the wildlife and scenery that surrounds me. I'm not walking on a main road in the middle of town, mate, breathing in exhaust fumes, as that would rather defeat the purpose of the walk ;)
Plus, regardless of that, it gets me outside in the fresh air and keeps me fit [remember I'm doing power-walking, which is more like a slow jog - not out for an 'afternoon constitutional', doddering about the place like some old tit, lol].
When you're semi-retired (these days more like three-quarters), and home most of the time, the opportunity for staying active minimises drastically, compared with when you're working. I feel *massively* better for going walking, and now factor it in (and a shorter session at night after tea) into my daily routine :cool:

Indeed... Although, if I don't hammer it, I can get nearly 40 mpg on a motorway run, and 28-30 mpg around town. Not bad for a 3.5L engine. Performance diesels rock! :)

Parks in the more 'prestigious' areas (where the councillors and MP's live) receive some level of upkeep. Elsewhere there is neglect. Paths with brambles and thistles growing across them. Trees with out of control growth, broken boughs and disease. Ponds full of weeds or dried out. What were fields and greens are now overgown with weeds.
It take it upon myself to carry secateurs now and then when walking the pooch, just to prune my way through some of the paths.
Doubt that'll happen within my (driving) lifetime. Until then, I intend on having as much FUN as possible, behind the wheels of a sporty combustion engine! When I'm too old to have such fun, I won't give a fuck what happens ;)

Funny how there's little mention of the massive air pollution from shipping, commercial vehicles and aircraft. After years of the government encouraging folk to buy diesel cars, owners are now singled out for vilification and punative road taxes.

Nightmare, mate. It's the complete opposite here. The council spend a considerable amount on the parks and public areas, planting colourful flowers (daffodils, etc) and trees, and keeping public places nice and clean. And on the whole, folks tend to keep it that way.
You do get the odd scumbag dog walker though, who fails to accept the fact that he or she is responsible for clearing away their pet's deposited excrement :wanker:

This is the kind of environment I walk around - and at the times I'm there it's mostly deserted. 5 mins from home, nice and peaceful and WELL away from the stress of the rat race.....

However, having lived here now for 17 years, I can assure you that such incidences are rare. It's a very nice area and the majority of people are friendly and well-behaved, which is clearly evident on my walks, with folks outside greeting each other with a 'good morning', 'good afternoon', or just 'hi'.
It's not like in big cities (especially London) where often strangers don't dare even make eye contact! :rolleyes:

Got a biggish park other side of town which is, or was nice enough. Has tennis and bowling or did, plus nice walks etc.
A few smaller kids ones too, including one at end of street. It leads to the cycle track that runs from airdrie to edinburgh. Not as nice now as the plonked a railway in too. Still it gets you out in country quick. Lots of countryside around here. Silvermines, volcanos, tors, prehistoric burials etc. A couple of country parks too with deer, fishing etc.

Nice one, and not surprising where you live. That sort of stuff is available to enjoy in most parts of Scotland - even Glasgow has some beautiful big parks and leafy suburbs! :)
It's only in very urban, highly populated areas in cities, with a large influx of mixed races, where the squalor occurs, which unfortunately Geoff has to put up with.

Yes. Another nice day by the look of it. Got some work done in the garden yesterday. May have another bash later
(although I do have a kitchen refurb to get stuck into :)).
Still too damp and cold for painting. (Got the car to touch up) among other things. Done the hospital monthly run which includes a pop in to livvy lidl. Got 2 apple turnovers which unfortunately got all warm and eaten ;)

Actually. It's been on the cards for a year or more. I bought the new wall tiles, paint etc. and a sink a while back. Now the weather is bucking up, I'll have a hope of getting it done without condensation interefering (the kitchen has to remain in use).
How's yours coming along Marco?
Slowly but surely, mate.
We've successfully chipped off the horrible 'skidmark brown' 1970s floor tiles, someone back then in their 'wisdom' had stuck on top, and exposed the lovely original terracotta quarry tiles underneath - all of which have survived the ordeal and look nice and clean. So now we have a floor :)
The new leaded windows have been installed, in accordance with the local regulations imposed on that, with the house being a Grade-B listed building, and they look great, and the plumbers are in now replacing old leaded pipes, with copper ones, and routing walls to accommodate where the new pipes need to go, for the sink, dishwasher, radiators, etc.
Still plenty to do, but we'll get there and it should look fab in the end! :cool:

The wind has been picking up all day and its now very strong. Rain squalls coming in with it too. Glad im in now. Had to leave hat in car or it would have been in next county.

But do you need to work that long? As I understand it (but I could be misunderstanding it) you have no dependents and no mortgage. Can't you just put shedloads of tax-free money into a pension and bale out early?
I had to slog on until my children were through their education, otherwise I'd have packed work in at least five years before I did.

I used to work with someone, then aged almost 60, whose father was still working as an engineer in his early 80s, because he loved the work so much and his skills were still in demand.

I was the only bloke in the company who really understood all the 'ins and outs' of my job. The management had little idea and had left me alone to develop the department as I chose, 'cos I made it work! I was fed up with things there anyway, what with the penny pinching all round and having supposed senior engineers constantly picking my brains 'cos they didn't know their jobs.
So despite all sorts of persuasion, I decided to leave. I gather from former colleagues that it took the clueless employer a year to get my former work back up to speed. I've never looked back, let alone missed the job.

I think Martin quite likes his job. It suits his needs: not too demanding (takes it all in his stride) and it pays pretty well, plus he can walk to where he works from his house, and if he didn't work, he'd have to fill the hours instead fantasising over Lindsay Lohan.
The old guy you mentioned who loves his work is far from alone. Each to his or her own, I guess. In terms of retiring (or not), much I think depends on whether you have any hobbies/interests/family activities outside of work that can keep you suitably occupied and without feeling that your life lacks purpose.
I think that latter bit (achieving a sense of fulfilment) is very important. There's not much point in retiring if you have nothing or no-one to retire for. Also, your mind and body can quickly deteriorate if nether is kept active. You need to fill your days with some kind of 'challenge' or rewarding activity, in order to make retirement work.
It certainly also helps if you're financially secure (or at least comfortably off) for the likely remainder of your life. There's nothing worse than being retired and having to scrimp and save and watch every penny... That's no fun!

i was forced to retire early to look after wife full time. there was an unattractive option, which wasnt really an option at all, and rest is history. I am where I am because of it.

No, the problem being the lack of shedloads of money, tax free or otherwise. I don't mind work really, it gets me out the house.
I finished working at the first possible opportunity, hated it, mainly because I had ended up in a management position through passage of time rather than ambition. I was never cut out to manage, much preferred being a 'back room boy' + I was expected to continue with the job I was doing previously AND manage.
Anyway, back to the weather :)

It's almost like a summer's day here in Wrexham! Currently 13°C, but feels warmer in the sun. Just cut the grass, for the first time this year, as it badly needed done, and now off for my usual 6-mile power-walk! :)
Then off later to my dad's for a nice relaxing lunch :cool:

It's so nice outside that the old man's going to light the barbecue and cook some steaks, although sadly as it's Lent, there will be no alcohol....

Same here... Just walked back from my dad's (in short sleeves), after eating lunch outside under his pergola that way, as it was easily warm and enjoyable enough to do so.

There's no rust whatsoever on the Brabster, and it's outside in all weather, 24/7, 365 days a year.

well its probably 10/11 years now. just round the wheel arches alas.. Ive made a cock of it but best i could do. cant get down to see properly and noone to help me so its go a covering for now.. I will need to give it another go later. Fed up being useless. off to bed where I cant do any harm :doh:

Nice day here again. Not quite as warm but not too shabby. Just about right for me tbh. Bright sunny and not too warm is my preferred weather. Doing very little...um too sore lol

Cloudy and cooler today. Nice spell has gone alas. Nice while it lasted tho
Pretty much the same here, although warmer at 14°C. That 4 degrees or so difference in temp I think equates to the average difference usually between here and Scotland...
The previous two days turned out really nice, despite a poor start. Here's hoping for better tomorrow! :cool:

Gloomy at the moment. Will it rain? That's the question.
Wet, cold and breezy here. Occasional sunshine.
Brilliant sunshine and dry, here in Wrexham, albeit in the wind, a little cool. Currently 14.5°C. Sunday's supposed to be a 'scorcher' here, for the time of year anyway (17°C expected), so hopefully they'll be right! :cool:
