Some interesting esoterica here - unusual pieces that sound great.

Gate Audio valve preamplifier - some hifi heads may remember Gate Audio from the late 80s/early nineties. A UK cottage industry with a good rep. This preamp has a cracking MM phono stage and a valve rectified power supply. A nice wood finish, a couple of marks, £250 UK Delivered.

Jean Hiraga L'audiophile clone power Amplifier - pure class A giving 20 glorious watts. Built by the speaker
Manufacturer Expolinear to use to demo their products, I paid 650 euros for this. The sound is worth every penny, but the finish is a bit DIY, so I'll ask £275 UK Delivered

Yves Cochet PP Un Head Amp - A two box active head amplifier for MC carts. Blew everything i tried out of the water until the AN SUT came along. I bought it and it developed a fault, so I sent it to the wonderful Graeme at Ampregen and he basically rebuilt the psu for me (all email correspondence with be forwarded to the buyer). Quite a few marks to the casework but it sounds amazing with every MC Cart I tried and even got a decent tune out of the 0.05 mv output Io! £250 UK Delivered.

Yeah, that should travel Adey, let me check my box stash and see if I've got anything robust enough.

Hello Jake,

Interested in the Gate preamp if it is still available, happy to collect.

Gate Audio sold, Hiraga sold three times over!

The Yves Cochet is still available. Not much online I'm afraid (as with all of these unusual items) but Yves Cochet was a well regarded French manufacturer from the 80's and may or may not be the same Yves Cochet that is now a French politician.

Pre arrived safe and sound thanks Jake, just wondering do you or anyone else know what this valve in the power suppy is? It sits next to a 90C1.

It's probably an ECL85, used in the power supply regulator.

But it could be an ECL82, which is a totally different pin out. Would need a close look at the wires in the base of the valve to be sure which.

Can you get a well lit close up of the internals of the base, with the gap in the valve pins towards you?

Thanks Alan I'll try and do it later.

Now I should know the answer to this, as I'm sure I asked on another forum but I can't find the info anywhere. Thanks for the help Alan, I hoped one of you clever tech geniuses might be able to answer!

Ok I've done one with the gap towards and one away plus a better shot of some internals. Please let me know if you need more

You might be able to help with this one though.. you very kindly included a spare 90C1 valve but also a 108C1. Did the amp originally come with the currently fitted 90C1 or could it have been the 108C1? And are they interchangeable?

They are likely not interchangeable as they have different regulated voltage outputs (90V vs 108V) and different striking voltages. If the 108C1 was originally fitted then the 90C1 would function but the voltage on the anode rail would be lower than spec and load regulation might also be rather poor, if the 90C1 was originally fitted the 108C1 may work depending on unregulated supply voltage, but if so could be a slightly dangerous sub as it will push up the anode rail voltage which might stress capacitors &c.

Edit:

Lawrence001's tube looks like a Sovtek ECL85 (though it could be PCL85 if Sovtek made those - that would have an 18V heaters so unlikely but...)

Thanks James let's see what Jake says unfortunately I can't actually try it out as I stupidly just sold my speakers with at least 1 week til some replacements arrive.

was it the 90c1 that was fitted Lawrence?

Yes theres a 90c1 fitted and a spare one plus the 108c1 spare. Don't want to try the latter if something's going to go up in smoke! But its just a bonus you never mentioned any spares in the ad, I'm just grateful I've got one good spare thanks.

Thanks again Alan and James, do you think it's worth rolling the ECL85 or would it not improve the sound?

Let's wait for Mr Firebottle to judge. Unless it's under spec it's unlikely to have sonic impact IMHO but happy to be corrected :)

Sorry I can't comment on that with any authority. I've never used a valve regulator stage.

I'm sure some Croft owners have rolled all the valves and would say it affects the sound, but my guess would be very marginally.
The valves actually doing the amplification are the ones to roll if desired.

Strange how things work out, wasn't sure exactly what I would do with the pre, I've just moved to an Olive 04HD server with Audio Physic Sparks and this pre adds just the right body and warmth to what might otherwise be a slightly sparse sound. [emoji3]

It's good isn't it? I thought it had just the right balance of texture and transparency. I preferred it to a Shindo pre I had at the time ... wonderful tone but too coloured, too thick for me.

Best part of 2k iirc. And this imaged better and was waay more open. Granted, the Shindo doesn't things no other unit does it terms of tone and density but didn't quite tick my hifi boxes

Interesting, I'll compare it to my DHT pre and see what the difference is.
