Yeah mate,
I've been wondering about that!

By the way, I've been meaning to congratulate you on your lexicographical acuity for some time now, you're absolutely correct:
Prog is not a four letter word, it is, in fact, the abbreviation of an eleven letter word.

Anyone see this? (the Heavy Metal stuff not the Schubert). Great anecdote from Sabbath about playing 'Warpigs' to the Vietnam vets. Sabbath were so far ahead of their time it was unreal. Especailly for working class blokes from Brummage.

Also the bloke who made his air guitar from a sheet of plywood: 'I didn't put frets on it because that would be taking the piss.'

Just watched the Maiden doc. One of the things I love about metal is for a lot of fans its more important than work Its the place where people who usually feel a bit on the outside can belong and there is real power in that.
For me going to my first metal gig was a bit like that it was like a religious experience a place I felt I belonged and totally immersed myself in the music

I was disappointed - at best it was a 'curate's egg'. It all seemed to be done with misplaced reverence.

Agree that 'At the Chime of a City Clock' and 'Pink Moon', were done well, also the instrumental duet between Danny Thompson and the pianist (Zoe sombody?)

The programme did however encourage me to go and play the originals.

Earlier this evening, I watched Songwriters Circle:

Justin Currie, Chris Difford and Boo Hewerdine are the featured artists as BBC Four combines great singer-songwriters for unique concerts celebrating the craft of the song.
Filmed at Bush Hall on Uxbridge Road in west London, these concerts see three singer-songwriters perform their classic songs in turn, while helping each other out musically with harmonies and the odd guitar part. The artists only meet an hour or two before going on stage and, in between performance, take viewers inside their work, chattng about their songs, their history and background.
The three songwriters - Justin Currie, formerly of Del Amitri, who wrote hits including Nothing Ever Happens; Chris Difford, who mixes his solo work with Squeeze hits such as Up the Junction; and Boo Hewerdine, formerly of The Bible and perhaps best known for writing Patience of Angels for Eddie Reader - compare notes on songwriting, life after Top of the Pops and the male menopause.

It's repeated later tonight/early tomorrow morning:
Sat 9 Oct 02:00 BBC Four

or:
Wed 13 Oct 02:00 BBC Four

I reckon that these three are responsible for some of the best songs ever. Just watch the bit when one of Justin Currie's performances reduces Chris Difford to tears - literally.

9:00 Classic Albums
"The making of Damn the Torpedoes by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers which was recorded in secrecy in 1979 as the band members fought for creative independence with their record company. the film examines how Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Rob Blair and Stan Lynch created their album with the help of co-producer Jimmy lovine and engineer Shelly Yakus."

This latter is four hours long but is well worth seeing. If you don't want to stay up that late, set your video to record it. At about 1 hour 45minutes into the film the Heartbreakers back Dylan on Knockin' on Heavens Door. Turn up the volume!

Just finished watching 'Eroica' on BBC4.

A dramatic reconstruction of the very first rehearsal of Beethoven's 3rd symphony (The 'Eroica'). I was particularly impressed by the orchestra, a French ensemble called 'Orchestre R้volutionnaire et Romantique', playing on period instruments and conducted by John Elliot Gardener.

'Eroica' does for Beethoven what 'Amadeus' did for Mozart. Absolutely brilliant, and one of the finest things I've seen on BBC4 for a long time.

It's being repeated at 00:15, so go and programme your recorders NOW.

Apologies for the late notification, but tonight on BBC4 are two programmes worth watching:

7:30 Transatlantic Sessions
"Performances of folk and country music, including Wheels of Love by Emmylou Harris with Iris DeMent and Mary Black and Ready for the Storm by Kathy Mattea and Dougie Maclean."

then later:

11:00 Blues Brittanica: Can Blue the Whites?
"The story of the British love of blues music from the 1950s to the early 70s. Contributiors include Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Mick Fleetwood and Paul Jones."

Been shown a couple of times before, but well worth a repeat viewing.

Barry
20-01-2012, 18:18
Another excellent evening's viewing:

7:30 Monitor: 100 Elgar

"A 1962 film by director Ken Russell profiling composer Edward Elgar. The programme features dramatic reconstructions of events from Elgar's life and was originally aired as the 100th edition of the Monitor documentary series."

(This was the first of Russell's composer biopics. This along with his biopic on the life of Delius: 'Song of Summer' are, in my opinion, amongst his best and most sympathetic. His later treatment of composers were, again in my opinion, over-the-top 'hatchet' jobs.)

8:30 Transatlantic Sessions

9:00 Paul Simon: Live at Webster Hall, New York

"A June 2011 concert bt the singer recorded on the final night of his So Beautiful or So What tour, which saw him playing at small clubs and theatres across the USA. He performs songs including The Ovvious Child, Kodachrome, Dazzling Blue, Rewrite and The Afterlife."

10:00 Imagine...
Simon & Garfunkel: the Harmony Game

"The story behind the making of Simon and Garfunkel's 1970 Bridge over Troubled Water, a creative high point in the duo's career that turned out to be their final studio record together. The film covers all aspects of the album's creation, including the emotional fireworks behind the technical breakthroughs, and features archive footage and interviews with Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and their collaborators"

(Repeat broadcast)

11:15 BBC One Sessions: Paul Simon

"The singer/songwriter and his band appear in an intimate concert from LSO St Luke's in Schorditch, London, playing songs from throughout his career."

Barry
17-02-2012, 01:43
8.30 Transatlantic Sessions

New Series 1/6

“Bluegrass singer and musician Alison Krauss, blues singer Eric Bibb, multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz and Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes are among the performers in a showcase of folk and roots musicians from Scotland, Ireland and the US.”

9.00 Arena: Sonny Rollins – beyond the Notes

“Dick Fontaine profiles renowned saxophonist Sonny Rollins, documenting his importance in shaping the direction of jazz throughout the 20th century and discovering why music remains the driving force in his life. The film-maker also goes behind the scenes at Rollins’s 80th birthday party concert, which took place in New York in September 2010.”

10.0 Arena: Sonny Rollins ’74 – Rescued!

“The jazz musician performs at Ronnie Scott’s in London’s Soho with a band including guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo and soprano-saxophone player Rufus Harley, in a film shown for the first time since it was recorded in 1974.”

11.0 Omnibus: Ronnie Scott and All That Jazz

Can I add a good word for Sky Arts 1 ? They frequently show abridged versions of commercially available concerts, Rockpalast re-runs, have the Classic Albums series and quite a few festival compilations. Although it's mostly existing material and everything is repeated frequently, if you like classic rock and alternative music it's worth a dabble now and again.

Last night's musical theme on BBC4 was "prog rock". Unfortuately the most interesting programme for me, that discussing the history of prog rock, was utterly spoilt for me. Around midnight there were long spells of signal drop out from Freeview, due I assume, to engineers working on the transmitters in readiness for the digital switchover in April. :(

Yes, good ending! Gotta love Saga; it would be good to listen in to the conversation at dinner .

I did feel the plot had holes the size of the Baltic Sea in it - not least being how could TT know that Martin would be assigned to the original top and bottom murder on the the bridge; I'm guessing that Copenhagen CID has more than one investigator . . But if you don't think too deeply it was a good series, the best aspect being the relationship between Martin and Saga IMO.

There's a season 2, so we can hope they're both back for that; Saga is, 'cos I read an interview with the actress on the Telegraph website . .

If there was a UK version, it could be called The Tunnel, and pair Maigret with Morse.

I think you could apply that logic to pretty much any crime drama to be honest, as I doubt there are many places in the world where the same Detectives always get the lead on murder cases - you would have to be a pretty unlucky Detective to get stuffed with all the work, all the time! "Oh bloody hell Boss, not another murder case"

Sorry to hijack this thread. Just to say on RADIO 4 tomorrow at 11.30 there's an item about recording studios. Think it may be the start of a series.

A year or two ago there was a documentary on BBC about George Martin. It showed you him visiting his studio in Monsterrat and how it was now just an empty shell after being hit by a hurricane. It was so sad to see. I can't imagine how he must have been feeling. He helped build a community centre as something to replace it but would be more beneficial to the community as a whole.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

Quite a good program (watched on iplayer). Now kicking myself for ignoring the previous episodes. They were a bit worried that the guest expert had destroyed a rare Telecaster but he said it was put back together - think that valve was a write off though. Brushed over the issue of computer music/autotune. It worries me someone teaching music/recording is pushing that technique as beneficial. Why didn't they show a 'proper' recording studio? The limit of hearing was interesting. I thought I could hear something at around 13khz over computer speakers (but even a couple of young audience members only reached 18khz).

Paul.

Watched the Danny Baker programme, wasn't impressed. The Grand Wazoo

I thought the programme was a trifle ropey. They had some great quotes that were badly sequenced to sort of, tell a re-imagining of history. Both this and the Danny Baker programme found it really hard to differentiate the concept of album and vinyl.

Barry
09-02-2013, 01:32
Oh, I found it fascinating - how the longer playing time the 12" LP could afford, allowed musicians to break away from the 2 -3 minute pop single constriction. And the battle to have radio stations embrace LP tracks.

Agreed the emergence of the 'concept album' was a little muddled (with that of the so-called 'Rock Opera').

I expect most viewers watching the programme said to themselves "Hey I've got that one - and that one - and that one". And possibly "Oh no - that one was a load of crap!" :eyebrows:

Grace Slick looked shockingly old. Billy Cobham has aged much more gracefully. Some fascinating footage and a good homage to the album. I guess they couldn't fit everything in, but it was satisfying enough in content and well put together.

One thing of note they showed pressing the new Court Of The Crimson King vinyl lp both at the start and the end. More Rega turntables and arms than any other make shown. I've seen Grace Slick looking worse in recent clips. She is 73 now and being retired from music obviously doesn't see the need to work on appearances. She also had a serious digestive illness a few years ago which may account partly for her appearance.

Even better viewing is "Telstar; the Joe Meek Story", being shown on BBC2 tonight at 11.05.

Biographical drama. In the 1960s, music producer Joe Meek invented new methods of recording that resulted in a string of hit records. But behind the genius lay a troubled soul who struggled to come to terms with his sexuality and was prone to violent outbursts, ultimately leading to tragedy.

Summer 2012, Paul Simon's Graceland - Under African Skies
Examines how Paul Simon's Graceland album affected South African liberation.
Paul Simon's Graceland album is one of his greatest achievements - a brilliant fusion of African rhythms and western pop which became a global phenomenon. It also proved hugely controversial, as Simon broke the UN-backed cultural boycott of a country still under the grip of apartheid.
Joe Berlinger's film captures Simon's return to South Africa 25 years on and contrasts the value of individual artistic expression versus collective political action as instruments of change. Did Paul Simon's unique collaboration with South Africa's township musicians set back the clock of South African liberation or drive it forward?

Thread title now altered to be non specific about time and channel.

Call me thick, but why would that help - have we to play a wee game and guess? :D

Lol... Indeed. I still don't get the point of this, though:

Thread title now altered to be non specific about time and channel.

Why be non-specific, and not just state the channel and time of the programme, clearly, (making it obvious for folk) and be done with it?

Well............originally the title of the thread was 'On BBC4 Tonight'.
This was because there is always some music stuff on a Friday night on BBC4.
But it became apparent that other channels show stuff about music too and if they wanted to let people know about it then members were starting new threads. But those threads became useless after the event.
So, being (on that particular day) a rather clever and talented moderator, I decided to change the title to allow people to use it more flexibly. However, as I've been doing it so long the other way, I forget that I changed it. I said I was clever, not Mr Memory!

.......and besides, up until just now, it was only Tim & me who gave a shit!
