Removing Musty - Mold Smell from B&W DM110 Speakers

Hi Guys

I bought these bowers DM110 yesterday upon viewing and testing they are are working fine BUT they have a moldy - musty smell like they have been stored somewhere damp i didn't want to be rude and bid the guy down from £10. Could their be any tips on how to remove the smell without damaging the cabinet veneer any advice would be most grateful - i bought them to actually use for a change but this is putting me of :rolleyes: Any ideas - Sorry if this is not the right section for this but need some help....

Have you checked inside to see that there is nothing 'extra' inside?

I expect that the smell might go by itself, perhaps a mothball inside might mask the smell. That is, if you can stand the smell off the mothball.

Make a weak solution of Jays fluid and give them a wipe over with a cloth soaked in it but wrung out so it is just a little damp. Dry off with kitchen towel.

Won't sort out a problem inside but once the smell of the Jays wears off they should smell fresh.

You could also try spraying with Febreeze or one of its generic equivelants.

Fresh air is a great remover of musty smells. Put them outside for a while. Today is a great day - sunny and windy.

I have used the Astonish product and it works well to remove mold from grout between tiles. However, I think they probably all contain similar formulations.

I don't think there is any visible mould as such, which is what the linked products remove, the Ronseal Product is excellent.

Its that musty smell when stored damp, I have a few album covers from long term storage lots I purchased, that smell that way.

You can mask the smell with something and with enough airing it will eventually go.

Might be an idea to remove a driver and get some air inside, if the wadding is carrying the smell it will take a very long time to go otherwise. Stick a vacuum cleaner on blow and push some air through the cabinet. Don't just put the pipe in a port without removing a driver though, or you will push the driver cones out.

The spores are pretty resilient and the mould will likely return. I would apply the spray a couple of times and then air and ventilate. Remove the drivers if you can and put the cabinets out in the open. Sunlight will also help.

Well time to update - bought some Mould/Must remover with bleach and did this work - yes slightly but they still honk so left them outside for the best part of a week hopefully will give them a try tomorrow in house i had them in the hall for an evening and they were not their long before they had to go out again....:steam: maybe i will leave them outside for an eternity - them may well be for sale / offered for free very soon so watch the classifieds

Yep. I'd take the drivers and all other contents out and store them somewhere warm and dry until we get some warm days in May, then keep them outside under cover for a while. The pong would go.

I would be wary of mixing chemicals. The bleach may counter the anti bacterial properties of the mould remover or worse! Give it time and plenty of air!

The bleach was in the Mould remover itself i did not mix them. :) bought from home bargains though...;) top notch quality.

Try blowing a hair dryer on warm into the boxes for a while every now and then. I reckon that'll help. Don't get them silly hot though.

During the 15 years of doing this i have never encountered this problem before its strange i would like to think from the house they came from that they should of been well stored , cared for i dont know. I really want to keep hold of them to use them in a put together system as i have a soft spot for older bowers hence the DM2's in the lounge. I will work my magic with them - tried selling them for £20 and NO one i repeat NO one wanted them its sad but not im gonna keep hold of them - Thanks for the help :) and grant also

I find stuff like that all the time.

Wipe down anything that is safe to get damp with Simple Green, and then put them in an enclosed area and gas it with Lysol a couple of times a day. I usually do it in my storage closet because the walls and floor are concrete.

It will kill anything that's growing on them and get rid of most if not all of the odor. If there's any odor left after a few days it usually just has to air itself out.

It works on stuff that smells like smoke too.
