Hello from an Irishman in Oklahoma

Hi to all,
My name is Alan. I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland but now live in Tulsa, Oklahoma USA.
I have been interested in audio ever since I got my first system from the “Great Universal” catalogue :).
My present system was put together in the late eighties and is as follows:
Dual CS5000 turntable with an Ortofon OM20,
Meridian 207 CD Player,
Hafler DH101 Preamp,
Audio Research D115Mk2 Power Amp and
Acoustat 1+1 Speakers.

I recently bought the cheap CS4397 DAC from China and that’s how I come to be here.

Something I've always been curious about:

I don't like the song, but I've wondered about this since I was a kid - so much so, that I've even considered going & finding out for myself!

I go on US road trips for fun with the family every now & then, & this is the sort of thing that might make a great book!

Sometimes I wish I was at least 24 hours from Tulsa, but today that could be pretty well anywhere on Earth.

I called my youngest boy after you :lolsign:

I got most of my stuff through my buddy, he was one of the salesmen in the "Hi-Fi room" of a place on Royal Avenue near North Street (might have been right on the corner) it was a TV store really but they had a room in the back with Quad ESL 57 and IMF Monitors, Sugden and Quad amps and much more. I spent a couple of hours there every Saturday before going for a drink. Later he moved to Lisburn I think it was the same company and I’d visit there then instead. I remember buying something from up around Stranmillis Road can’t think of the name of the place now. That was thirty years ago.

I have not had the pleasure of visiting Enid but I have heard the name quite a bit, might have been on the weather station when I was tornado watching. You are quite right about the distance thing.
Year before last I drove up to Toronto almost non stop about 1200 miles stopped at a motel about two hours east of TO just to get the arrival time sorted. I have driven to from Tulsa to Phoenix (and back of course) many times before I finally moved here, once with just some kip at a truck stop in 19 hours elapsed time. Yeah and one time I made it from Dover to Naples, Italy in 25 hours. Hey I just realised I like driving too.:lol:

That was Radio Rentals....they did A&R, Luxman, Avance, Dual, Target etc. Your activity pre-dates Zeus Audio..it came into existence in the late 80's as a foil to Lyric Hi-Fi who sold mainly Linn and Naim (the place on the Stranmillis Road). I thought you might have got the Meridian 207 from Zeus...never mind.

Howdy, Bodran. I was raised in T-town the Big-town, but made good my escape some 30 years ago. I now reside in Harrison, AR but get to Tulsa every now and again to see family and friends there.


I spy several of my favorites in your list, most notably Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. My parents attended some dances they played back in the day.
My mother was a waitress at the Venetian Inn in Tontitown, AR when they came through one time. Turns out the owner was a long time friend of a band member (can't recall his name). When the Playboys were in the area, the Venetian Inn would be open late, closed to all but the band for a late supper. Mom reports that they were all perfect gentleman in spite of her (and her mother's) fears inspired by the band's name.

Is the Cain's Ballroom still open? If so, you've got to get down there.

Yes Cain’s is still open and thriving as is the Brady. There is that new place in town though attracting bigger acts. I see we share another hobby or habit mine is “Bushmills”.
