Bought it used on EBay one week ago, supposed to arrive tomorrow! I'll have to recruit some help to more it into position. As it weighs 130 pounds! 300 watts at 8 ohms of pure Class A! A true monster. Something I've wanted all my life, and now they are finally old enough that I could afford one used.

I've had a pair of Legacy Focus 20/20's for about 4 years now. And my present amplification just ain't cutting it. Oh they sound nice enough I guess, but I know they could sound so much better. I drove them with a Forte' model 3 all this time, lacking bass terribly. So, I added a Crown XLS 2000, cheap band amp I had laying around to drove the bottom half. Big pair of 12 inch woofers in each cabinet, with a radiator on the rear? Or a third woofer? Not sure. But, it did flesh out the bass, but left the mids a bit recessed.

I have pondered for well over a year, perhaps I should sell these monster speakers and buy something easier to drive? I'm sure I could have moved to some Martin Logans and been very happy. But, somehow I just could not let go of these big speakers ( 5 feet tall and 200 pounds each) without finding out what they could do. So I scrimped and saved for over a year to buy this used Krell, having the money twice and something popping up to take the money twice, I finally followed through.

To say that I am excited is an understatement! I had to change the ends on my Legacy speaker cables, and buy a 20 amp power cord to accommodate the beast. On EBay is a store called Ice Age Audio, he makes some nice cables at affordable prices. UK plugs as well. So I've got my work cut out for me, to get this heavy weight settled into my system and do some serious listening to see if it's the answer to my dreams or not. Could it be the last amp I'll ever own? One could hope.

I live on 5 acres in a rural neighborhood, so neighbors aren't an issue, agk, but my elderly parents live in another house on the same property, so they I do have to worry about. A while back a friend and I were having a few drinks and about 3am my Mom called me to say, "Turn that Shiite off!", other than that, I've had no complaints.

Now that you've sorted out your cabling for the Krell perhaps you should investigate this site too:

I know exactly where you are coming from. I have a serious left leg disability and recently took delivery of a Prima Luna Dialogue premium power amp. It weighs 30kg and me and the missus had to lift it into place. Really not bloody funny but now it is in place I really do not want to be moving it again.

A few more pics I happened to have from the seller. I do like the looks as much or more than their newer stuff. In fact, some brands of amps these days have cases that look more like a computer case than an amp case? I guess I'm just old school?

Wow - exciting! I'm sure you will be well pleased.

I promised myself about 15 years ago that I wouldn't buy any gear that I couldn't lift by myself. I've kept to that apart from my speakers which are a bit borderline at an inconveniently-shaped 100lb.

I've just been looking up your speakers.
Not small are they!
I see from this (http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/104legacy/#hJ5zAOKsI6wOA7BQ.97) Stereophile review that they weigh 185lb each - you'll probably have to move them round a bit when the Krell is installed - at least, I generally find that new gear initiates a bit of a reshuffle as the overall peresntation changes and needs to be dialled in a bit.

I hope it all goes well. Looking forward to some photos of the new setup.

No, it's not just you.
I was chatting with one of the main UK Krell dealers a couple of years ago and he said that Krell don't make proper looking gear any more. Both he and his customers were moving to other brands for that traditional audiophile appearance and construction.

You lucky man. Every now and again a KSA50 comes up on eBay and I almost and hit the BIN button, but the shipping puts me off. I remember hearing it driving a pair of KEF R107's I was auditioning at Audio Projects in Leeds many many years ago and bought and how creamy and organic the krell sounded. One day.....

Enjoy.

Thanks Neil, I've been pondering a good match for a preamp, and of course a Krell does come to mind. I had my hopes up for a nice Audio Research, or BAT, but the owner's manual says that the amp does not play well with tubed preamps. Actually what it says is that the amp is very sensitive to DC offsets, and tube preamps are known for having them. So there is a filter in the amp that can be jumpered into operation, that will allow a tubed pre, but they bypass this filter normally because it does restrict output in some fashion.

Now I know a bit about electronics, and I understand what they are saying, but Krell definitely leans towards a solid state pre. And make the case that things will sound better without engaging this filter.

But I've read of many a system where others use these and other tubed preamps all the time? So I wonder exactly how much of a big deal it really is? That said, a Krell preamp would most certainly make a great match, couldn't go wrong there.

The KRC-3 actually has a bit of "the tubes" about it. A warm balance and tremendous bass bloom (not boom). Your amp was designed to complement it. I haven't heard a preamp with more at the bottom end yet. Also the volume control is unique, and ridiculously smooth and present at all volumes, no sweet spots like normal volume pots. It is also fully DC coupled, fully balanced, no capacitors on the signal path and no DC offset.

I've got the KSA 50S. I'm using a passive pre with it to good effect, something you could consider as an option.

Never heard a Krell before I bought it so had no idea what to expect but it is excellent. It will be staying until it dies or I find something better, although lord knows what that would be.

Nope. Valve pre amps are universally capacitor coupled and unless the output capacitor is faulty have no DC offset.

You know that's what I thought? I really like the Audio Research LS27, pricey but I love the rear panel, with loads of inputs each with single end and balanced. And of course it has to be remote controlled! And that unit is critically acclaimed. I guess a phone call to Krell will settle that, perhaps they are only referring to some ancient tube gear?

But certainly no flies on the Krell either. I've seen the Phantom III for less than $3K US used, with the built in DAC. That is rather appealing. And it may sell for even less by the time I save up my monies! And those KSA preamps are quite affordable, half that of the Phantom. The KCT is holding its on on price, as much as the Phantom in some cases.
(My present pre is a Parasound Halo 3, has served me well but I only paid $300 used for it.) so if I wait a year to get a preamp, it will not be an issue. But, I keep my eyes open and if the right deal raises its head I may have to jump on it. There are a few audio/video shops around Richmond Va, but only one true high end shop. And I don't get around like I used to so I do depend on reviews and the recommendations of others. So thanks for those ideas! I've got plenty of time to think on it, never rush to a purchase decision!

Valve pres have always been capacitor coupled. The only possible issue with old valve pres is that if the caps haven't been replaced, specifically the output cap, then there is greater chance of DC leakage.
Fairly rare cases of SS DC coupled gear, especially built with discrete components, and without a DC servo amp, would be the most likely type to drift in their DC offset.... So some of Krells own pres and similar SS gear comes closest to "likely to have offset"! This would be likely only if components had drifted in value with age and heat.

One thing to be careful of, fully power down and wait till everything is discharged before changing any connections etc. I had a Krell go DC on one channel on me once and it totally fried the cone on a Tannoy 15in Monitor Gold. Went up like the map in the opening credits on Bonanza. It may just have been bad luck that mine went up but I have a suspicion the original spark was caused by an arcing interconnect.

One should always power down any amp before doing anything to/with it! Especially SS ones. People messing with their amps with the power on is one of the biggest killers of power amps.

An interconnect can't arc BTW as they are usually only bearing a few hundred mV to a Volt or so. If it was intermittently short or open circuit that could cause failure resulting in speaker frying DC offset with some SS amps. As could touching the centre pin of the RCA input leads to the power amp to check if there is mains hum and therefore the amp is on etc. None of these things should cause an issue... but in rare cases they can in practice. Other than the very few OTL valve amps, valve power amps can't go DC and will usually be immune to the other things I mentioned.

I'll not attempt to explain further re the possible issues with SS amps as it's very technical...

Thank you for the benefit of your experience Jez and Tom! Most appreciated. What you were saying about DC Servo, and failing caps, makes great sense. I do have an old O'Scope around here somewhere, I should break it out and check the output of a preamp if I really want to see if it has DC offset. If I could find it? The owner's manual does warn of making sure to keep volumes down, and switching off before making changes or instances like Tom described could happen. So I guess you aren't the first? I love the visual of the map on Bonanza!

But the amp is here in my living room and is beautiful! With the exception of a slightly bent fin :-(. Due to shipping, it's not bad, hopefully I can straighten it out in the future, but it's nothing to get too upset about. I'm not going to send it back and sue the shipper for it. Been there and done that. Believe me it gets ugly.

Years ago I bought a pair of Bose 901's and UPS ran a fork prong through one! And then has the nerve to claim it was improperly packaged. I couldn't even speak to them, the sender had to do all the arguing. But with photos I took they refunded the money. But to get the refund I had to let them ship it back to the sender, and they really trashed it on the way back! Busted it all to pieces! And only refunded half the money, since the other speaker was OK. Total jerks about it. Took a few months too.

But this fin was really not the shippers fault, the amp shifted in the carton. The factory foam was not strong enough to keep the amp from shifting. Reading 124 pounds in a book is one thing, but grabbing onto it is quite another! That sucker is heavy!

I thought I had my cables all straight to plug it up, but they won't reach it where it now sets. So, I have to move a few things before I can hook it up, hopefully today, Saturday. It sure is handsome, a well made piece of equipment, nothing light or sub par about it! I know everyone thinks I should bust a move and get it all hooked up, but I am disabled, and am forced to take my time. I do feel a bit relieved that it's here! Once I get it hooked up, I'll relay my listening impressions and post some pics in the gallery. Thanks everyone who responded! What a great bunch of guys!

I know that feeling! Big Tannoys in my case ... and an EAR 912 pre-amp.

Your Krell looks absolutely fantastic. Someone once told me that you can tell when its a 'proper' Krell, because it will come with its own gravitational field

I like that Peter, it came with plenty of gravity!

And I've got it hooked up and running now! And it's everything I expected and more! It's a whole new stereo, a major leap up, at least 3 steps up! Being a bass player I like to be able to hear what the bassist is doing, and I can hear him clear as day on every recording. And I do think it's sounding sweeter as it warms up, and I haven't even played any vinyl yet. Audiophila is a sickness, I just hooked up my new amp, one of the best around, and I'm already salivating over a new preamp I need to buy to go with it! Is there any help for a poor sot like me?

One issue, it got a bent fin in shipping. I'm certainly not going to send it back over a bent fin, or file a claim, as it honestly wasn't the shipper's fault. The factory foam in the box failed and it twisted in the box, the box is actually fine! But, my question is, can a bent fin be straightened without breaking it or scratching it? I may open a new post with that question...

Re Preamp...do try something passive before chucking lots of money at an active one. Even a pot in a box will give you some idea of the clarity obtainable - and I speak as a bass player, much less mud and boom down there with a passive. If you like the sound you could go slightly cleverer passive, like TVC or auto TVC. I have more shivers-down-the-spine-was-that-in-the-room moments since going passive...

Re bent fin, if there's room to get some pieces of hardwood and a g clamp or two in there, try flattening the bent fin between the two pieces with g clamps pressure - this is very controllable and unlikely to break the heatsink. If there's room.

Past owner of a KSL/KSA100Mk2 combo BTW...Your amp looks superb.

I've been giving the bent fin some thought. For one thing, I think if I apply some heat it may prevent cracking. Heat from a heat gun, like I use for shrinking shrink tubing. Another thought is that there are 3 identical heat sinks on either side. Worst case, I could swap it for one farther back? At least it wouldn't be right in the front! Once it's in the rack that would be far less noticeable. I'd probably be better off to remove it from the amp before attempting to straighten it anyway. Thanks Nial, I'm very pleased with my new toy. Years past, I plugged my CD player directly into the amp, nothing in between. It played loud! But not too loud actually, it was an interesting experiment.

I did as Jerry said. You just need someone who is used to bending metal, so panel beaters are a good bet.

Nice amp I have spent a solid few hours with one, albiet with Krell preamp and DAC, some Usher Dancer and Apogee Callipers being the victims.

Tried a KSA 50 on Apogee Duettas with a passive and it was quite poor really. So I was surprised how good the KSA 300 actually was.

I've owned a refurbed original KSA50 - it was OK, not great. It was a bit boring.
I've owned better sounding and more musically involving Krell amps.
My cat liked it more than I did. But then she was more interested in its thermal properties rather than its sound quality.:)

Without using a lot of heat, and i mean a lot which will disfigure it anyway, its very unpredictable as to what will happen if you start putting serious pressure on it. It also depends a lot on type of metal too.
Understand it doesnt look great but if you cn move it to a less obvious place then I would rather you did that than take risk of breaking it. Paint if its painted may break off too and it may end up looking worse.

I was just on another post about a cat and Audio! This guy had a big folded horn and the cat was way up inside! Couldn't get him out. When I was a younger man we had a cat that would stand in front of the speakers when playing at high volumes and let her whiskers touch the cone!

But after living with the amp for a few days now, I'm not in any hurry to fix the fin. Starting to get used to it I guess? Unless I can buy a replacement I doubt I'll make the attempt. And I would remove it from the amp if I did, I don't want to be pounding on the side of the amp with a large hammer! I have not stopped playing music for two whole days except to sleep. More than I expected or hoped for, it really is something.

Thanks for all the good ideas, if I am still interested in fixing the fin in 6 months, I may take a whack at it. Right now I'm having too much fun just listening.

Maybe even flip it to the bottom? I'm not sure if the holes will line up, but if I swap it for one on the other side, it may flip it to the bottom? As I said in a previous post it has 3 plates along each side. I believe the 600 has 4 on each side.

That may be a more complicated task than it appears from outside the amplifier Russell and one for someone with technical abilities. It's unlikely to be just a question of undoing the screws and flipping the heatsink. There may be some serious soldering required.

Absolutely - there's going to be a lot of electronics attached to that heatsink!

I was an electronic tech and computer genius in another life, way back when. I'm sure I could manage swapping the heat sinks, or replacing it if Krell could sell me one.

As you may imagine, when I first opened the box and saw the bent fin, I was quite dismayed. But as time passes, and the more I listen to the amp, the more I am enjoying it and the less I care about the fin. I would like to see it fixed one day perhaps? Just to maintain the value of the piece, so as long as I get it repaired before I die, I'll be happy. And if not, my son in law can fix it after I'm gone! It really is a magical amp and I am blown away at how it sucks me in, I've played it every waking moment since I hooked it up! The largest single improvement I've ever heard in my system.

I wrote about 6 months ago, that I was loosing my interest in stereo. That I just didn't feel compelled to listen like I was to my previous system, that cost far less than this one. And that i thought it was just me, low testosterone or something? Just loosing my passion for stereo. But now I know it wasn't just me! My passion for good stereo is reborn! Who would think that a single piece of gear could have such a profound effect on my life?

And as always, I hesitated and questioned whether I should part with the money, was it worth spending that kind of cash on an amp? But the money is long forgotten and my love of music is renewed and I wonder why I didn't do this 10 years ago! I have found that true for almost every dime I've spent on stereo, I was the same way when I bought my Scout turntable. A huge jump from my Pro-ject Debut I had before, could it possibly be that much better? I've wanted a real high end table all my life! Well, since I was 13 I guess? And now that I've got one, I could kick myself for waiting so long. So I guess my point is, I have no regrets for spending any of the money I've got in my system, nothing I have ever bought has brought me as much happiness.

A gentleman I used to work with freaked out when I told him how much I had in my stereo. "No stereo is worth that much!", so I asked him how much money did he have in that sport boat in his yard? And then I asked him, how often do you use that boat? Turns out about 15 times a year. So I told him, I use my stereo every single day! Hardly a day goes by that I do not thoroughly enjoy it! My life is better, enriched by good music, any time I want. A point he could not argue with. If there is a piece of kit that you are lusting over, buy it! Life is too short to wait for it.

Thanks for letting me ramble, and get off topic, feeling a bit philosophical today I guess?

If you're going to get the use and enjoyment out of something it's always worth spending the money. Money is no use to you sat in the bank.

I do feel like the money is safe in the gear. This amp has probably depreciated nearly all its going to, (if I can fix the fin) so, I could have spent the money on a gold brick, and stashed it in a safe. But now I get to enjoy the money! And when I pass my daughter can sell the amp and get the money back! If my son in law would let her?

Wondering if a new thread might be a good idea, your listening experiences/feelings now you have it - you could call it 'I got me a Krell' :D

Great idea! I have such a hard time navigating this forum, using Tapatalk doesn't give me any descriptions or Instructions, but I guess I can wing it, like I did here.

Especially now! With interest rates being microscopic! A woman at the bank tried to get me to open a savings account that paid 0.0065% interest?

Likewise, although I think they have given up on me now. That's not likely to change in the foreseeable future either. Swapping money for Krell makes economic sense!
