Michell Orbe upgrade for Gyro plus other options

This is the Michell Gyro upgrade kit to include platter, new clamp, and screw tip for bearing. New, this would cost £469 without the bearing, current price £155. So combined price new is £624. Both bearing and platter are in excellent condition.

I had a custom flange made for the bottom of the bearing so it can be glued to the Michell Syncro frame shown above. The flange is screwed to the bearing so can be removed. The legs on the Syncro frame are made from Delrin so with this frame and the Orbe platter and Michell bearing you can DIY a turntable.

How to drive it? Well, belt or idler.

This Lenco idler is mounted on a Delrin collar which fits onto under the Syncro frame - hole is drilled for this purpose. The idler can be moved back and forth to adjust speed but this is a bit fiddly so if you want to go the idler route you'd be better off with a speed controller or be happy with a single speed deck. I'll also provide a Lenco motor but it's up to you how you arrange the motor under the platter - there is room.

Origin Live motor - in a homemade case, you can do better! + Origin Live 2 speed controller + transformer power supply. There's still a bit of DIY to do - mounting the motor in a better case, add a belt ( I have one somewhere but can't guarantee I'll find it), mount an arm and probably provide a nice base for the whole thing. Do this and you'll have an excellent belt drive turntable.
I've used this in both idler and belt drive configurations. Both work and run smoothly and silently but I found keeping the Lenco motor in position a bit of a pain although I'm sure someone with better engineering skills than me could make this drive system stable.

So, to summarise:
Upgrade your Gyro with Orbe platter kit and bearing, £300
Add Syncro frame, idler wheel and Lenco motor to DIY a complete idler turntable £300 + £40
Add Syncro frame, Origin live motor and controller to DIY a complete belt drive turntable £300 +£100

Can vouch for 'Orbeing' your Gyro, makes the deck sound a bit less bright n breezy and more grown up sounding.
Lowers the noise floor and noticably reduces surface noise.
Great price to upgrade too.

Is the bearing for a Gyro or Orbe ? or are they the same , Lots of difference on weight between the two platters

Same bearing Al.

Only difference (and change) is that Michell ever did was update the bearing to an 'inverted' design, which is easily identifiable by the gold colouring of brass.
The older was silver coloured from its aluminium construction.

Its the same bearing I have on my deck and no problems at all.
Not a massive weight difference btw between the two platters, the Orbe one being slightly heavier.

Yep, the Gyro has all those spinning weights so not too much difference.

The Origin Live DC motor and controller can of course be used with a variety of belt drive turntables. My brother uses one on his Sondek and reckons it works better than original. I do have a Syncro bearing for the rest of the stuff and possibly a platter - will check and update thread.
