As silver tarnishes, how do you clean these safely?

I'm no expert Kevin , but apparently silver doesn't lose its conductivity when it's tarnished .

I believe the tarnish on silver generally is silver sulphide, a conductor in its own right. The tarnish will reduce silver conductivity, the degree of reduction depends on many factors. Tight contact may be anaerobic reducing the ability to tarnish.

I will just soak a cotton bud in some brasso and poke it in the sockets to clean.:eek:

No, not quite. Silver sulphide is an insulator with a resisitivity of ~ 2. 10-3 Ohm.m (or about 100,000 times that of pure silver). Silver suphide is however very soft, so the tarnish film will be easily cut through to the base silver plating when a plug is inserted into the socket.

As such the sockets shouldn't need 'cleaning'.

Silver Sulphide is also used as a semiconductor.

It has interesting properties as discovered by Michael Faraday in 1833.

Resistors using Silver have been known to 'grow' Silver Sulphide whiskers causing a direct short.

None of this really helps the OP though, it is interesting. If anyone needs to discuss the conductivity of above I suggest starting a new topic on this issue.

I have ordered the second one you recommended Brian and in fact it looks very similar to my current double socket. A few years back I went from a switched to an unswitched copper to and An unwitched silver and the difference was noticeable. The unswitched silver also has nice tight sockets.
