Osx sierra. The worse OS I ve seen...

A few months ago I bought a macmini because I had to work on some osx only software for a project. I never liked OSX. I bought a macbook once and sold it after a month.

This time I had to tollerate the differences and step out of my comfort zone to get my job done.

It still had the same quirks but it was ok.

Now after I "upgraded" to sierra all seem to have gotten worse.

The OS is super slow. I get random crashes and restarts, and finder does not even work like a proper file manager. Sometimes files open with single click. Other with a right click.
File selection on programs is glitchy. I select a file and nothing happens. The select button is disabled. Then i select a second one and the window closes selecting the first one.

Now I just selected about 100 files to move on a usb stick and I clicked them to select and drag. Guess again. The machine ia now stuck trying to open ALL files...

I am really fed up with all that...

Once again it is verified that Jobs was what kept Apple going strong.
Now I cannot shake the feeling that number cruncher managers are killing what kept the company alive all those years. Attention to detail and quality.
With that gone all you have is a pretty and quirky machine that might or might not do what you expect it to...

I earned a very good living from programming Windows based machines but I would NEVER go back to Windows as OSX is far superior in my opinion and Sierra is working perfectly, as expected

If Sierra is not working properly then something is definitely wrong and you should contact Apple about it

I like Apple and OSX but don't have recent experience. I'm only using an iPad right now but will be buying a MacMini again soon. Could it be compatibility issues with a particular vintage of machine? There have been a few iOS for iPad updates that have initially affected older tablets until Apple got round to fixing them. Now I realise that shouldn't happen but it might mean you will get a future fix. I should add that I'm not a computer expert so I could well be totally wrong.

FWIW I hate Windows with a passion. It's been all downhill since XP as far as I'm concerned. Vista and Windows 8 were particular low points.

Totally agree Andy, XP was my preferred Windows op system but I still wouldn't go back to Windows and hate it with a passion as well

I owned a used Mac Mini for many years with not a hint of a problem until I got my Mac 27 as a Christmas pressie (how nice a pressie was that !)

I only paid £250 for my Mini and got that back when I sold it and it was still working flawlessly

As for perfect, it's a strong word for something so opinionated. You really have to shoehorn your workflow to fit the ecosystem. But that's another discussion

Oh and don't try to daisy chain your minidisplay port monitors. Apple does not support it at all. It only works as mirror. I fought fora whole day with it before I read about it and went out to buy a different second cable to attach the monitor directly on the machine.

And don't get me started on how retarded the multi-monitor functionality is. You have to click once on the monitor to activate the desktop and then proceed to click whatever you want. Oh and if you click away from a full-screen program like a movie player, then you have to see the stupid top bar on top of the movie until you get focus back to that monitor.

And on finder, if it is on the background, you cannot click straight on the contents of the window to activate it and work with them. You have to click on the title bar first, which in turn triggers the maximize functionality. Which means that you have to click it again to get it back to where it was.

I don' t know what is your everyday usage, but my experience is that it is more half-baked than perfect.

Is your problem when using Photoshop Dimitris ?

Unfortunately I don't run Photoshop so cannot even try to replicate the problem..

If I do a 'save image as' on any web image I can do that no problem..

Seriously though Dimitris if you are experiencing problems with OSX then there is definitely something wrong either with the Mini not being compatible or something wrong with your install of Sierra

All Mac's run flawlessly with the correct OSX installed, believe me I have years of experience with both Windows and OSX based machines and OSX is the most stable platform there is...

The macmini was bought new 5 months ago and is the latest/current model. If they do not support that then I don't think we have much more to discuss :D

You can try what I described above here on the forum.
Try to add an attachment.
When you click select files, switch to thumbnail mode. Click one file. The open button remains inactive. Click a second file. The window is dismissed and the first file is selected on the interface

The rest also easy to replicate. Just put finder on the backgrtoudn and try to activate it by clicking its contents

For the other stuff you need a second monitor

I don't have a second monitor so can't help you with that I'm afraid

In Finder, in Thumbnail mode, I can select any file and by clicking 'shift' and left click mouse I can select any other file, as many as I want to

When you are in Finder select 'View' and then select 'As Icons' and that will default Finder to always showing you 'Thumbnails'

Try that and then try to make an 'Attachment' as I described above .... add an attachment to this thread...

If that doesn't work try the following:

Select a folder in Finder, then click View button/Show View Options, then set the options you want
To have the folder always open in the view, select the “Always open in” checkbox
To use these settings for all Finder folders that are in this view, click 'Use as Defaults'
If you set options for Icon view, then click Use as Defaults, all folders in Icon view appear with the same options

Yes the thumbnail or icon view works without issues.

He has expressed disappointment,I am just providing a nice alternative. I note his comments about moving 100 or so files to / from a USB, which is normally a very simple task
I know I have in Linux Mint copied and moved 3000 files to external drives or more without any issue at all.

It is good the world is full of choices.

Recommended Dimitris has original software for his Mac and if changing to Mint safely store his Documents etc on a external drive.

Thanks for the suggestion.
The thing is that I am a happy windows user.
Both because I am very used to them and rarely have a problem with them (windows 8) and because as part of my job I have to do much development, collaboration and testing on windows OSes.

I do have a few Linux virtual installations to work on the occasional PHP project. Mostly ubuntu because earlier in my life I played a lot with Debian and I cannot really be bothered to learn something else. And because Laravel has the very nice Homestead environment which I use almost exclusively lately.

The only reason I bought the mac was a nice project that appeared, where I had to work on some mac-only web design software (sketch). And it was a nice opportunity to try some IOS development too.
I did find some virtualized OSX hosted services that I could have used, but to be honest taxation is killing us here in Greece and the macmini was practically half price for me if you consider that I would have given half the amount for taxes anyway.

However when I got the Mini I initially hated the whole OSX at the time (think it was Snow Leopard) but after using it for a little while it 'clicked' and going back to Windows was a massive step backwards

I also thought that Apple was a complete 'rip off' and to some extent I still believe that, BUT I now would rather have no pc than a pc running Windows and am a complete convert to OSX

It was around that time that I also got my first mac. It was the absolutely gorgeous MacBook. The white one. Lovely thing.
But OSX never clicked for me. After around 3-4 months I installed windows with BootCamp and almost a year after buying it I sold it because it made no sense to keep a device with inferior hardware.
Good thing they keep their value.
I ended up with a Dell Inspiron which proved to be a huge piece of cr@p but that is another story.

I do not mind spending money for my toys, as long as they do what I want.

Having no pc is a nono for me though :D Although I might have to restrict my usage very soon to give more weight to other parts of life :D
