What can I stick on this arm?

Any suggestions as to which cartridge you would stick on this arm to improve the sound. At the moment it has the classic Audio Technica AT95e which does sound very good, however I would like to try something better.

Just a couple of things. There is no VTA or azimuth adjustment.

The Shure M55E is too good a cartridge for that arm (which looks little different to what was fitted to the Garrard SP25s). A Shure M44-7 (or an M44E at a pinch) would be be IMO better.

I have a M44-7 Barry and I have a NOS Shure M55e stylus - do you know if these will work together?

The stylus will certainly fit James . I tried the cheaper M55e Jico stylus in my M44-7 and it sounded terrible . Can't guarantee that I had it all set up properly though ;)

Agreed. I wouldn't use an M44E either tbh, that arm is too agricultural. An M44-7 is the way to go if you want to go down the retro route. It should knock spots off an AT95E.

Think I will dig out my M44-7 and buy a new stylus for it and give it a spin.

The Goldring G800 was also used regularly in the SP25 back in the day, but it's a long time since I've heard one so I'm not sure how it would suit nowadays.

G800 would probably be OK. I'm looking at a couple right now. They're on my shelf gathering dust! :)

Sorry, what ever cartridge you stick in that arm is not going to give off its best. If the AT95e is still in fine fettle, then leave well alone.

I agree actually. The arm will be limited in ability and the existing cartridge is probably as good as it needs and can cope with.

I used to use the old Shure M75 EJ2 in a Garrard SP25 Mk.III and got some reasonable sounds. It may not be better though.

Jimbo, how much would you like to give for an M55e? I have two, one with a stylus that looks ok and was playing on my Lenco recently and one with a damaged stylus. PM me if your interested.

I am going to try the Shure M44-7 first and see how that goes. If it sounds better than the AT95e then I may proceed to an M55e(thanks for the offer Ralph)

I agree that the arm is limited on the SP25 and the At95e may be a s good as it gets but I am curious if I can improve the sound further hence the desire to try other cartridges. Just wasn't sure what would work or where to begin.

The SP25 is part of my girlfriends 1976 Sony music centre. It does not sound bad at all for what it is and keeps my girlfriend very happy spinning her vinyl!

But being an audiofool I cant help but tinker.;)

Anyone tried an AT100e cartridge.

I believe this will accept many of the MM replacement stylus in the AT range so easily upgraded to something special?
