View Full Version : Ikea Kallax etc
Anyone know for sure if these box systems fit 12" records ok. Is there any others around same price that are worth consideration. I wanted to have some of my music out for playing as I struggle to get them out of the boxes they are in at moment any info gratefully received :D

I have just checked. We have both Expedits and Kallexs at home. The internal dimensions are near damn identical - LPs and box sets will fit in fine.

Yep, they are the perfect size for LP's (it's Kallax btw). I've got 2 of the 8 square ones (well 1 of those is the older Expedit, but they are the same size internally). Don't think there is any alternative at this price point.
Thanks Charlie and Simon... yes I noticed I mis spelt doh!! Ok I wasnt sure as they dont give internal dimensions. A single 4 or 6 will do me I think. I have limited room and need them at a decent height as I cant get down too low now. Currently in the ali boxes Ive always kept them in.. great stuff, at least i know they will fit.

The kallax is perfectly sized for records. The need to be braced in my opinion. I had one for a while, and it didn't feel sturdy enough to trust my albums with. I braced it, and it worked fine. I ended up replacing it with shelves I built myself that fit the walls perfectly. There are plenty of other options, but they are a lot more expensive.
Amazon sells some double cube ones that aren't very expensive, that seem more stable. I have some stacked two high, that make a good base for setting some gear on too.

I find they are fine without bracing though it might be worth fitting some wooden slats or dowels at the back as this stops adjacent LPs sliding back in the bay when you replace a record. It is easy to fit a dowel when you are putting the unit together as you can drill through the central upright panel and into each side wall before fitting the side panels.
Worth noting that the earlier Expedit which the Kallax replaced had thicker panel walls. Ikea is cheap but I think quality has declined over the years.

I just screwed 1x2s across the center of each row, and painted them to match. I had the big one. It was probably fine without it, but it made me feel more secure. It kept the albums from sliding out the back too. Screwing it to the wall would probably be even better.
I've seen pictures of collapsed ones, but they looked like they had the wrong side on the floor, and all of the weight sitting on the dividers.

They're not designed to sit on the side. That's not the shelves fault, it's on whoever put it together if it falls over. I think mine would have been fine without braces. It was full, and bracing it was more for my piece of mind. Putting screws into the fiberboard may have even made it weaker. If I was going to do it again I'd probably cover the the whole back in plywood. I ultimately ended up building my own, but if I ever move they're staying behind. There's no way to get them out in one piece.

^ Yeah, but I've seen loads of pics where people have them on the side full of records and then lots of gear on top.
Trusting a cheap shelf from IKEA to protect all of the albums just made me paranoid. It probably wasn't justified. Their stuff is generally sturdy if you put it together right and don't try to move it around when it's fully loaded down.
They sell castors for them to set on. Rolling one around would scare the crap out of me. A rolling record wall would be cool though.

I covered the back of my shelves with peg board, sturdy but lets air through. If that's important? I felt like it keeps things dry? But it worked great, and cost little. I was thinking all that weight makes a great base for your 'table! No footfalls going to bounce those shelves around!

They don't move around. The albums seem to absorb vibrations too. I can jump up and down on the floor in front of it.
The pegs could probably be adapted to keep all of your accessories and different headshells on too. I'm always misplacing my protractor.

Intend to both have it off floor and screwed to wall at same time. Daughter is doing some courses in Glasgow next month and she thinks an Ikea is near the place so might get it soon.

The records slipping back is quite annoying.
Mine is pretty sturdy as I used a resin glue to bond everything together as I built it.
I just need to add something on the back and I will be happy.
If you want something with doors the Ikea Besta range are also a perfect size for LPs
To stop records slipping too far back it's really quick to install stick-on plastic electrical conduit on the shelf. I hope what I'm saying is clear enough without a photo.

Everything has its place Grant. Everything is stable and nothing has moved since doing this, been standing like this for two years or so. Only thing I should have done was put a backing on the back of the record units. In saying that to date its not been a problem.

Being 3 smaller units they will be much better stressed and stable. Fitted flush to wall and you dont reall need backboard.my cds are all over as units are not big enough or the same

I have a couple of the 2x2 Kallax racks, they were perfectly solid when full of vinyl and did a great job of keeping the room tidy. The only downside was that I played less records, I've always had my collection in rows on the floor, leaning against the wall (using wood to ensure a flat contact surface). So when I'm looking for a particular record to play I flick through the rows and always notice something else I want to listen to as well. When I had them in racks and could only see the edge of the plastic covers they are in, I found myself thinking of the album I want to listen to, pulling that one out and not really seeing anything else around it, and having a terrible memory (very terrible memory), I ended up listening to less and less vinyl. Now they are back on the floor in rows and I'm once again flicking through them it's great fun finding things I forgot I had.
I appreciate that my record collection is a great deal smaller than some of the collections here, and rows doesn't suit everyone, but racks didn't work for me.
Could you take a pic Rich, sounds interesting. :)

I have space in my listening room where I could use some for my modest collection.

That's funny, I find the exact opposite, the seam at the top of the sleeve makes the perfect flick grip, and no wear and tear to the cover.

being a collector once, all mine have always been in covers. Only com out if I will be selling them and usually not even then.Helps not just to keep cover clean but record too. They do take up a fair bit of room though making records a fair bit thicker

They certainly do add to the storage space needed, and I think another reason why shelving didn't work for me is the sleeve seam obscured the album spine, making it harder to see titles.

That is the sort of piece that dictates the style of the room decor.
Would look nice if done well.

Those contemplating buying a Kallax unit might like to scoot off to their local IKEA post haste. They currently have the black 8 bay unit on sale for £40 with a (free) Family Card. Not sure how long the promotion is on for though.
