View Full Version : Hi fi near a radiator?

Having just moved house, the wall which otherwise would be ideal to position my equipment on has a rather large radiator running along it; would I encounter any problems if I were to situate my rack in front of the radiator?

Hi Alex
Not advised if the radiator is on, as amplifiers in particular and some other components tend to run warm to very warm.
Can you perhaps move the radiator to a better position?

Not Ideal Alex. can it go to the side of radiator? Not saying anything will happen unless you are running class A, but if you do then try and have as much a gap as you can.

This would be the ideal but having completely blown the budget on the house there is no money left! My Croft pre seems to run quite warm but not hot and the Croft power runs very cool.

Unfortunately not, it's a sizeable beast running the full length of the wall.

You could use a reflector in front of the radiator where kit is. good ones are said to reflect up to 95% of heat. might divert it round the kit. maybe fit it to back of the unit

Why not just turn the radiator off a few mins before listening? If you set the rack a few inches in it will help too.

can you change to a more efficient modern 2 panel rad which is smaller . say half the size . assuming yours is quite old which I am guessing it is , if it needs to run the whole length . not that expensive to redo a a rad and better long term solution

All good options. I think changing to a more modern radiator is the best bet long term but won't be done for quite some time. We have so many other priorities coming from a 2 up 2 down terrace to something much more substantial we're seriously lacking in furniture (only 1 bed in a 5 bed house gives you some indication!). Saying that my priorities are different to hers ;)

After a bit of a think the updated plan is to have the hifi at the opposite side of the room from the radiator next to the bay window and the speakers either side of the bay.

Just turn the rad off for the time being and use a free standing heater of some sort.

So this is where I am at the minute. I just can't find my speaker cables [emoji22]

Well, right or wrong, I keep my units on a big solid pine table about a foot from the lounge radiator to keep the turntable and cartridge slightly warm. I find that this gives a much better sound than really cold and of course it is more comfortable for me and the the other half.

Sorted then.

Quick move around and think I'm preferring it this way.

If I find my components are getting too hot I'll have to reconsider.

Should be ok at that tbh. It low and away so wont be too affected. Can always add some reflective in between if needed. Cheap, wont be seen and effective.

lovely house , love the stained glass . well done . i am sure if the rad is not too high in temp it will be just fine .

Looks like a beautiful house. I don't think there is any danger that the radiator will make the kit overheat.

Our local regional programme goes as far as Benson and I remember on more than one occasion that it was coldest place on the weather forecast.....in the winter of course.

Hot air rises, so the rad is drawing cold air across your hifi. A small sheet of foil backed polystyrene will suffice for dealing with the radiated heat.

It really is not a problem unless gear is pressed up against it. Besides, better to leave on low temp all day rather than hot blasts. Adjust the thermostat until it's nice and keep on, no need to worry about the stereo!

Title reminds me of the Smiths

Thank you all. The little stained glass windows are a nice feature. I'll put a couple of better pictures up of them tomorrow if interested... there's a large stained glass window half way up the stairs which looks stunning. We're really happy, can't quite believe it's our house.

Benson is very frequently the coldest place in England, it's bizarre, like it has its own little climate.

This house is in Worsley though so unfortunately it's a weekend only house for the next two and a half years until I leave the RAF. Unless I'm extremely lucky and bag a posting at Manchester careers office; a job which doesn't really interest me but one which will allow me to live in my beautiful home.

My Hi-Fi rack sits very close to a radiator, I simply turn it right off, problem solved.

I think it looks great by the window and you can sit listening to music and looking at your lovely garden at the same time. Congratulations it looks like a lovely house, may you have many years of happiness there.

I agree, but the gear by the fireplace looked too cramped/wrong. Could the hi-fi rack go the otherside of the bay window maybe?

It can go wherever you want! I'd say get a new rack that fits wherever you finally decide that you want to place it. Don't discount getting longer speaker wires either... I also think that "cramped by the fire in the unfurnished house" says beautifully "we just moved in and nothing is decided yet"

Those windows are beautiful though.

Thank you all for the nice comments once more. I did like the speakers either side of the window which as mentioned allows me to look upon the garden, however, I found that the floor slopes at the right hand side of the window meaning my speaker stands wonky! I also thought that having them by the window would mean my speakers will suffer from sun bleaching.

Another reason is I intend to have a projector screen on the wall opposite the window. This location will allow me to use my stereo speakers as FR and FL in a surround sound set up.

Lovely bit of glass. The house seems to have a good feel to it. When was it built, 1920s?

1920's is a good guess [emoji106]
