Paul McGowan writes .....

I received the most interesting of notes from a reader.

The note was in thanks for Copper Magazine, our free twice-monthly publication. http://www.psaudio.com/copper-magazine/

Why am I telling you this? Because the author of the note had resisted reading Copper because it was free and without ads. Too good to be true.

I’ve been to this party before. If something’s free, it’s either worth very little (you get what you pay for), or there’s a catch (free with purchase).

Copper’s none of those things. Copper Magazine is all about building community—creating a platform where like-minded people gather to be on the same page, enjoy each other’s company.

Sometimes free is worth more than the price paid.

"If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold. (http://www.metafilter.com/95152/Userdriven-discontent#3256046)"

Always a good starting point.

That's not to say free can't be good (I'm an open source software developer after all), but often you need to look at free as: For the cost of my identify/purchasing habits/opinions
