View Full Version : Ear Infections - Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
Well, the test results came in for an ear infection that has screwed my right ear up for a month.
The lab cultivated https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudomonas_aeruginosa from a swab of my ear.
This is one nasty mofo. Caught from the local swimming baths I have almost no doubt.
This makes your ear weep infection like there is no tomorrow. You have to walk around with bits of tissue in your ear, which you have to replace frequently. You lose hearing to about 40% of normal in the infected ear.
It doesn't want to respond to some antibiotics. Ended up using a powerful betamethasone and fusidic acid based cream, plus some ear drops containing neomycin plus betamethasone for deeper into the ear canal.
This can have you in a mess for months - literally. The only way to conquer it is to declare nuclear war on it. Not recommended. I've never had anything like it. The skin around your ear hole and ear lobe turn into a scaly weeping mess.
I am now cured. I think. Maybe. It likes to come back. So still a bit unsure.
So if you go swimming, think twice about not using ear plugs, particularly in indoor pools.

Nasty! I've had ear problems, so I sympathise mate.

MMn, me too. Ive a permanent ear infection.. had it for 20 years now, and on a spray to keep it at bay. apparently it cant be cured... a form of dermatitis I believe. Hospital said it wont go completely so I have to treat it. I was on betamethazone but now on a better one that actually I have hopes it might just defeat it. Dexamethasone which is a corticosteroid. Might add mine doesnt weep fortunately.. that one sounds nasty

pseudomonas is a nasty old bug . you often see soap sitting in wet dish`s and that will grow it. it makes wounds turn green . horrible
thats why often flowers are banned in hospital because it breeds this bug .

I have had a duffish ear for a year or so ,but its nearly better now , so I can sympathise!!
I managed to get some hot welding material down my ear (I was welding with a Mig , whilst lying flat under the object being welded , and the molten blob went down my ear canal !!
Stuck the parlour hose down it straight away(which Doc said was dead wrong lol) Made my hearing on the one side go bass sounds mainly ,I lost the treble in that one , and had to wait quite a few months for it to come back to somewhere near normal ,but not quite !!
I think that's one of the main reasons for curbing my vinyl madness , as having imperfect hearing made that seem such a waste of time !!:eyebrows:

These are terrible stories.
I was a mug. I developed an ear infection swimming in a pool in France this summer. I left it until I got home.
Antibiotic sprays and steroids or something. Took about 10 days to clear. Did nothing for the first 3 days.
I had the same thing years earlier also in France from swimming in the sea. My ears closed up completely and wept horribly.
The local French Doc was brilliant. He gave me some anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen) which popped my ears open in about 30 minutes.
Then rinse with Alcool Borique (http://www.curieuxdepharmacie.com/article-16495495.html) in the saturee version which has white crystals of Boric Acid sitting at the bottom of the 70% alcohol. This drains off all the gunk and wax onto a tissue, and you can see it.
Then some antibiotic drops which, IMO, weren't the main event. I felt better within an hour.
You can't get alcohol/Boric Acid in Britain. Some alleged issue with it damaging the eardrum. So we get all this almond oil/olive oil/steroid/antibiotic nonsense. But when I had the same thing in Greece, the local Pharmacy went out of their way to make some Alcool Borique for me. Wouldn't even charge me. Worked like a charm. :)
But the main thing, IMO, is to dry your ears after exposure to water.
