Pioneer PD-S 505 Precision CDP into Monarchy Audio DIP 48/96 jitter buster, then Monarchy Audio M22B DAC, followed by Musical Fidelity X10-D valve buffer stage, into MingDa MC-9 TVC pre-amp, feeding a Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro Class A power amp, driving a pair of Tannoy Cheviot Mk.II 3128 speakers.

That little lot sounds WAY good.

This weeks system will be largely the same as the one which I have been using for years - though I have been experimenting with the use of a sub-woofer to compliment the Quad 57s.

Yes I have - thanks Alan. It has improved the 'beaming' in the vertical plane.

The jury is still out on whether using a sub-woofer is helpful or not. Most of the time the level has to be so low, so as not to boom, that I wonder if it is worth bothering with using a sub-woofer at all.

I've got my sub crossed over very low for the frequency setting, about 38Hz, but there are limited pieces of music with any real content that low.

The beauty of the REL approach (a copy actually - you didn't think I'd buy one surely :rolleyes:) is that everything is adjustable.

Those DC1000 Tannoys are ridiculously easy to drive. I used to get monstrous loudness out of mine even with 8 watt valve amps.

If you go to the lumberyard here and ask for some 12.5 mm plywood you bet some blank looks. I'm bad about switching back and forth. Most of the time it's not even intentional. I use whichever one seems fitting.

In fact reading data sheets for materials supplied by an American company, their use of Imperial units would drive me up the wall (for example: thermal conductivity expressed in BThU/foot/degree F).

However when it comes to putting up shelves or any other DIY work, I automatically think in feet and inches. Same too when driving; I think in terms of miles and not kilometres.

We use both. For scientific purposes I agree with you on the metric system. It should be universal. I'm the same way with imperial on construction. Using fractions makes measuring faster and calculations are easier to do in my head. Feet and inches are easier for me to visualize. With machine work I don't really have a preference as long as anyone else involved is on the same page. It would be nice to only need one set of tools.

I prefer Fahrenheit when it's used to describe weather. 0 and 100 both feel like the boundaries of hell.

25,35 and 50 mm here now. took a bit of getting used to it but the bar owners made a fortune. Still got the pint and half pint though amazingly. Used to be a 1\4 gil in good pubs...its really an Irish measure but was used here too(similar cultures), mostly in clubs.(Scotland that is)

The US has, or had a lot of strange measures... jiggers etc.

The jiggers are usually 1.5 ounces. Most places still have pints. Some have quarts. They usually ask if you want a 12oz or a pint. Most real bars just bring pints. The pint glasses seem smaller than the used to.
