Doesn't really trip off the tongue but I'm having a bakeoff in the northwest (between Preston & southport) 18th Feb. A few places already filled so room for another 12 or so I reckon. Bring munchies for lunch and your own drinks and we normally use the local tandoori takeaway for tea.

Just the one room so only one system, but it's a big room :)

Any more? We can do vinyl, CD or streaming. A few wammers and ex-wammers are coming but it would be good to get a few more new faces.

And the local takeaway is very good!

Could you list your system again, so we know what we're going to be listening to? :)

Sounds like an interesting system. Do you Dominic Harper, from NWA? He lives in New Longton, so I suspect is not too far from you.

Really nice bloke, as is his wife Natalie, and great hosts. You should hook up sometime... Maybe pop him an email and see if he fancies coming to your bake-off?

Is there anything you would like me to bring Paul? I'm happy to bring my turntable along for a play if anyone is interested.

Failing that Il just bring some cakes and some music.

OK, we're up to 13 or so. There will be (very nice) porkpies, plus any snacks people bring. Dom and Natalie from NWA are coming, plus Ben, marco, greg and Mike from here and a few Wammers.

Anyone else?

Thanks to everyone for coming. Some cracking food, good to chat to folks known and new and some new music to try. The sl1210 vs Aiwa vs Rega was interesting. More drive and detail from the techie, deeper but less controlled bass from the Aiwa and less drive, and the rega in the middle for me.

Any cat owner can testify to the beneficial room treatment effect they provide. Although I can see that in this example the feline is also demonstrating how it can absorb unwanted vibration which may transfer to the deck. The cat collects these in a special pouch in its throat and releases them as soft purrs which are pleasing to the human ear.

Evening all,

Firstly I must apologise for taking so long to write this short review of Pauls bakeoff from a few weeks ago. I meant to do it straight away but then realised I had a few technical IT related issues and along with work being a bit manic at the moment things have been delayed somewhat ......hopefully this rectifies the situation :D

Anyway the event was a real pleasure to attend and Paul and his wife were the perfect hosts. There was a good mix of people and the music & conversation and pies flowed non stop for the 5 hours or so that I was there.

Pauls system consisted of a pair of lovely looking big Tannoys run from some Radford valve power amps and a passive pre of some sort. Initially we mixed and matched between his CD player (which I didn't pay much attention to unfortunately) and his stock rega deck. Later on we plummed in my own slightly modded SL1200 and Mikes Akia DD deck. I've not heard any Tannoys (big or small) before and initially I thought they lacked a bit of top end sparkle however after about an hour or so they really started to come on song and by the time I left I was very taken with what they were doing. They just seemed to have an effortless and enjoyable presentation, something I could have sat in front of for way longer than I actually did (if I only had the room for a pair myself..........:D)

I cant remember everything we played however for me the Tannoys really came on song with a thumping Grace Jones album and the back to back Propellorheads 12 inch we played via my techie and the (eary / mid 80s?) high end Akai DD turntable brought along by Mike (Jac Hawk) all of which we played through a firebottle phonostage. I think the techie would have been pretty evenly matched with the Akai had it not been for the AT150 MLX cart im using. We also ran the same tracks through Pauls stock Rega whos performance was lacking (for me anyway) against the 2 DD decks but thats not really surprising given its bog standard nature.

Anyway hats off to everyone who attended really I had a great time and it was lovely to meet some new faces. Heres a pew pictures for the benefit of those not able to attend.

A few photos don't show for me

Thanks for the comments. Had a great day ourselves.

Sorry Paul, my mistake. Wow Kudos to your father in law then, what sort of amps are they?

I think the photo issue is photobucket related, its been really slow uploading stuff to it but I can see them all on my PC

Thanks for the offer of a return visit, id be very pleased to return the favour if you ever found yourself Liverpool way.............its just a shame ive only room for a few people or id try a bakeoff of my own.

The amps are the Mullard 5-20 circuit. Some decent iron in there and a couple of foo Mullard valves, all running at a slightly detuned 350V to give about 18wpc

It was a really good day Paul, so much so I've gone and bought a planar 3, gonna spend some cash on it, putting an RB202 arm on it and then some other mods, once I'm done it would be good to see how it sounds against your stock planar

Sounds good. Mines a basic planar 2 with super bias cart. I'm not even sure what arm it is, it came fitted... [emoji15]

I think it's time for a new belt tho - that one is 20 years old
