Hi,. For the technological disabled such as myself, when you say "plug a hard drive in" do you mean an external hard drive loaded with music files such as FLAC and how do you control the HHD ?

So it has to be connected via a cable then or are they wi-fi ?

I've been thinking about the raspberry pi as it seems to be popular but when you say control the HDD from a PC what's the point of the raspberry pi as I thought it replaced the PC?

No, the hdd is in my instance plugged into the rpi which has an operating system on a sd card, in this case moode. the pc or tablet, controls the rpi via a browser using the local ip of the moode operating system it gets allocated by your router. Router is connected usually by ethernet cable, but on rpi3, it has ifi inbuilt I believe so you can have it connect that way too to your router.(probably need to start with a cable in set up though) once you ask the rpi to search for your music on the hdd connected to the usb port of the rpi, all tracks etc will appear in the browser in a filed system with album art etc.
you can also use a NAS connected to the router instead of a hdd. I believe the new rpi is better power wise at running non powered usb drives now, but with my 2b I prefer to use a self powered hdd. never had any trouble with it. you can add music to the hdd wirelessly too although its fairly slow; ok for a cd now and then. if youve a few to be added then I disconnect and plug it into pc and drag them in..
Nice system and I find moode 3 a very good system

Ah ok not sure I understand all that. I wanted to get a raspberry pi as a standalone music server with a dac module. I would use my PC to fill the HDD but I don't want it involved in the playing. Come to think of it how would I change the track on it hadn't thought about that.

I use my tablet tbh. think most folk do If you use a stand alone hdd with music on, then the pc wont be used if you have a tablet. if you can site it where you can use ethernet form the rpi to router then all the better but its not essential. Without a tablet you need to use a phone which is a bit small or pc browser.
With this system you would initially just need the cable and the hdd. and some sort of browser capability

Cool sounds like a plan. is there an "audiophile" level dac at a good price for the pi? I'd like to try DSD or at least lossless.

the dac in it is a lossless dac. think they all are. not sure which ones do dsd but some do... i have an audiophonics one which upscales. they just plug on top of the rpi. that one will output redbook analogue to the hifi as is.

ps the dacs sound very good

Thanks for the help guys

Some info about the Dac which is fitted.

The Pi-DAC+ feature the same great Texas Instruments PCM5122 DAC as the original and respected IQaudIO.com Pi-DAC, with Linux drivers built in to Raspbian. No kernel recompilation needed.

The Pi-DAC+ also includes a headphone amplifier delivering, for the first time, an all in one Full HD audio experience for those who listen through headphones, volume is again hardware based under software control and shared with Line Out.

A fully HAT compliant Raspberry Pi expansion board with EEPROM support, the Pi-DAC+ delivers Full HD audio from your Raspberry Pi. As the Pi-DAC+ uses the same audio chipset as the previous Pi-DAC full Linux device driver support is already built into the official Raspbian Linux distribution.

Raspberry Pi HAT (A+/B+/2/3) compliant accessory
Full-HD audio – up to 24-bit/192kHz playback
Integrated hardware volume control (via ALSA), full 2v RMS
Built in High quality audio headphone amplifier (TI TPA6133A)

I am absolutely delighted with mine and whoever buys this will be very pleased I'm sure. I'm guessing to the uninitiated the set up sounds complex, it isn't once you come to set it up yourself. It wasn't until I set mine up a lot of things became clear, example - I went to setting is in my iphone, opened the wi-fi page and there was Volumio waiting for me having loaded the volumio software on to the mini sd card. Your iphone, tablet or similar is then your control panel and you can quickly navigate to the hdd or USB stick that you havde your music on. One other thing worth mentioning is the way the dac accesses the data - it uses the i2s connection rather than a 75 ohm or BNC connector - this seems to have a big effect on the sound quality and gives it its 'analogue' and relaxed feel. Honestly, for £65 - the cost of a lower league pair of inter connects you're getting a digital player that in my opinion betters a 10k CD player.
