Hi all,
I don't know if it's just me but does everyone seem to be chopping and changing parts of their setup on a weekly basis ?
I'm as guilty as anyone but I have spent an hour or two listening rather than thinking and I've thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Just wondered how you all feel!

I'm happy with mine, especially now I've put the ushers back in, and yet I'm hankering after an integrated amp again:doh:
I'm reasonably happy right now but only for the third time in 30 years and I could still do with getting bigger speakers.

Yep... not changed source components or speakers in years and very happy with them. Not that I think they are the ultimate and wouldn't want anything better, more like they are so good that I'd need to win the lottery to afford anything that would seriously better what I have... and of course the superb amplification helps a lot:D

I'm delighted with my workroom system and it never fails to joyfully surprise me. To get 'better' would mean a huge expenditure, so I don't even think about it. The downstairs system is another matter though and for the amount it gets used, I've seriously considered getting some of the very slim B&O actives (they're neat floor-standers, sound ok and herself tolerates them). Didn't consider for long though ;) but this stereo set is a work in progress right now...
im very happy too (at the moment) lol

I'm More then happy at present the little JVC's are surprising for their size could live them so cute
I love the fun in changing and listening to different kit.....i have excess amounts of HI-FI around me as i type i tend to try different speakers a week depending on mood maybe im mad but your not the only one having fun.
Their will be a time when i will settle down. VERY NEARLY their with the Sony's Actives & Tannoy's
Still a lifetime journey ahead so enjoy it....

It's no bad thing to keep trying to improve I suppose but I'd forgotten to really just listen to the music. Have to say, I'm not sure what's happened at my house but the Missions seem to sound bigger than before. New speaker wire burnt in ? (that's a joke BTW)
Been upgrading steadily for three years now.

Mine used to catch me out with a 'wow' moment every now and then. Ridiculously good little speakers!
Aah yes, the endless is it...isn't it....brain draining mind fuck that is the Audiophile. Been there - done it, many times. I used to listen for a couple of hours a day.....when I say listen....that was to the bits of equipment. Now I have a session about 2 or 3 times a week and listen to music. Sounds Marvellous.

With the right recording and in the mood it sounds sublime. Although there's always the itch to try something differenct.
Anyone who says they are 100% happy with their system is either lying, or is very undiscerning, or is winding you up by pretending they have one over you, or is slightly deranged etc etc.
Happy enough is about as good as it gets I think. As long as I get my hits of absolute awesomeness every now and then I am happy. Now I'm at it:lol: But then again, my system IS better than yours.;)

Well my system sounds bloody marvellous and i don't feel like changing anything.
(that's not to say nothing will change though. Vinyl will be taking on a secondary role instead of being at the forefront)

Yeah, you know how parents tend to keep the crap items you made in wood shop at school? Mine were so bad they binned them without a second thought.
I'd be 100% happy if I hadn't heard better. That is the key really. Don't ever listen to anyone else's system unless you are confident that it will be worse than what you already have

I'm very happy with my system, thanks for asking :)
It has come on by quite a few incremental jumps this year, mainly the amplification from phono stage through to mono block power amps>
Then improvements to the TT and a new (to me) cart. Even the CD source is sounding pretty darn good.

I very recently re-plumbed the sub into the system, although I am now in a smaller room when compared with last year it has still had that expansive impact from bottom to top. Don't quite understand it but quite a few people say the same.
Just enjoying setting up an all vintage system for TV duties in the lounge as well. With judicious use of all the controls on the NEC amplifier it is sounding rather good.

Very happy with mine, nothing changed in the last 6 or so months, so a bit of a record (geddit :) ).
As a result, the amount of records coming in the house is ridiculous !
If anybody's got a sensibly priced DD TT kicking about, I'd like to hear about it though :)

Very happy with mine and not changed anything significant for three years. It just plays music and engages you exceptionally well. You feel like the performer is in the room with you and everything has a natural acoustic.
I can sit and listen for hours on end without fatigue and the system just makes you want to put on record after record so it must be doing something right.:)

Yes they do have an effect but sometimes not what you maybe looking for but worth trying. I think next thing for me will be to sort out separate electric circuit and maybe get rid of all fuses altogether!:)

yes they are verity audio Rienzi . not terribly well known in uk but relatively small at around 1m high and not too deep . having had focal 1028be and diablo . they have the sweetness and detail of the diablo and the breadth of the 1028 in wife friendly form . very sweet sounding with no fatigue and imaging is first class . john at midland audio has the next model up [leonore] if any one interested . highly recommended .

I'm gobsmacked by my system - but with each continued and well thought out upgrade there comes a little more refinement. Cables, valves, power supplies help to clear away those final veils.

The key to happiness with a system is simple, it is about being "happy enough". You cannot have everything, some compromises need to be made, which is down to which consequences are not as important for listening enjoyment.
My biggest bugbear in HiFi is excessive sibilance / artificial edge to vocals and general 'grainy / flat' sound, so have worked on this. I am also sensitive to box colouration and drivers imparting their "stamp" on the sound, and bass overhang, that has also been worked on. Finally I am very sensitive to DAC and digital artifacts, again, this has been worked on. In the process I lose ultimate bass extension and power handling, but I listen at moderate volume in a terraced house, so it is more important to me that my system sounds great at low volumes rather than, like my Amphion speakers, playing at 95+db without really breaking a sweat and easily taking 200W up them. Such levels would blow my Royd RR3s, but good luck getting a better midrange than these at more sensible volumes.
There comes a point in HiFi where "improvements" turn into "differences", which is a good indication that you have gotten the most out of your system.

At least then you don't end up altering the midrange and top end too much, ending up back at square one. :)
Subs can be difficult to integrate, but I think a lot of people are too blunt with them, subtlety is the key.

Considering where I find myself in life at the moment ...I found myself more than grateful not only for the system I have at the moment but also I am largely happy with the system I have too.......rather Buddhistic maybe but , at the moment I will not go into where I am in life but , having a system that sounds good to my ears is a great source of peace to me!:)

After a bit of recent 'tinkering' with new (to me) speakers I am very happy with the current set up sound wise... I am not planning any major changes as it definitely 'gels' at the moment
The only thing I might do is get rid of the spikes on the speakers and change to a nice solid plinth and blu-tack to anchor them better
Ive got speakers and amps coming out of every orifice :) 3 cd players too, so cannot think of anything I need. maybe another set of cans as my birthday is coming up. not that Im not happy with the ones I have but a different sound perhaps. Maybe a dac to put in main system too as I am considering consigning the rpi to the sales list if it doesnt get more use. But maybe nowt.lol still got 5 sets of speakers outwith my main system plus 2 sets for testing ;)

I haven't had much time to listen lately but will warm up the garden room tomorrow and play some vinyl. It's too bloody cold to play with my old car anyway.
If people want to box swap that's fine. But if people start talking about fuses I'm out of here.

I put speakers on the missions on the stands without spikes and I really like how solid they sound. Haven't tried with any spikes yet

Ahhh the age old question lol. Truth is I'm not sure at the moment. I'd like to have a listen to a pair of quad s4, as they on first glance look like they might work in terms of size, looks, and they have a ribbon tweeter which i have on my current speakers. but i have a feeling I won't like them (admittedly this is based purely on the one pair of quad L series floor standers I heard a few years ago so I may be completely wrong).
I've really only ever used floor standing speakers so I'd like to at least audition some decent stand mount speakers too.........ive literally no idea where to start tho :D

My neighbour has some, so I know them pretty well. Sweet, clean, tight bass, no nasties. Quality build too. There is a little chamber at the bottom for mass loading them with bags of sand or similar. Not tried that though.

I've just purchased a couple of very heavy slabs today for my Auditoriums and I'll place them underneath to try them when my back recovers a bit..:doh:

Yes Geoff they are stone about 30mm thick

In that case Bev, bear in mind that no matter how dry they may look or feel, they will retain moisture. That will promote mould if placed directly on a wood or carpeted floor. I've had it happen.

Thanks for the tip Geoff I hadn't thought about that... I intend to seal them with something like PVA first before painting them

Well the ruark Templar speakers have arrived and I've let them get to room temperature for a couple of days before judging them.

I was a little disappointed at first. They are quite small for floorstanders. However when I got them going I was stunned.
They are so excitable and joyful.
I've got sand in them and the bass is thudding. No boom. Treble is excellent too and vocals are eerily live. I'm really impressed with them.
So am I happy. No.
I've had the CD player on a bit lately and to be honest it's too clean a sound. It's quite fatiguing. So I reconnected my VALAB DAC and we are in business.
I love the sound from that little box. So smooth and vinyl-esque. I'm in Dreamland here.

Is that a set of drums on the right? If it is, you want them out of the room, as they'll be resonating to the sound from the speakers and adding colourations to what you're hearing. If you try it, you should hear a difference.

I probably have less money invested in the gear that's hooked up now than I have in 10 years, and I like the way it sounds.
I've got enough stuff laying around to put together 10 systems. I'm constantly changing stuff. I'm not emotionally attached to it so I'll sell a piece if I get a good offer and throw something else in it's place. Being able to fix the components I find cheap or free and sell them has always been what paid for my system. I enjoy working on the stuff too. It has always been part of the hobby for me. I prefer to spend the money on the music. Selling a crate of records is harder for me to do than getting rid of any piece of gear.

It's fun for me, and it makes an expensive hobby pay for itself. It took me quite a while to accumulate it all. Nobody wanted most of the stuff up until a few years ago. I couldn't give it away. I found most of it at garage sales and thrift stores. Now that vinyl is making a resurgence people want it again.
I watch Craigslist for deals, and buy things on Ebay when I can. I just make the starting bid and let it ride. Sometimes nobody else bids and I get lucky.
Some stuff I've gotten just by showing people pictures of gear I've restored. They have their old stuff stored away in their basement and just give it to me.
Everyone has different tastes, so I've been able to trade components I probably wouldn't use for ones I wanted too. Even old cartridges are worth quite a bit to the right people. I've bought junk tables just because of the carts they had on them quite a few times.

I'm not sure it's a case of being unhappy, well that is very possible I'm sure. But it all depends on whether your stereo is a quest, or a hobby. If you are seeking that pleasant sound that makes you happy, and once you've gotten that feeling of wanting to play one more album, and each one leads to the next, and you've reached contentment. If you stop there, it was a quest. But if it's a hobby, then even when you reach that point, you keep looking! You keep looking for that tweak or new gear that will bring even more pleasure from the music. And no matter how much you've invested, or how great it sounds you remain on the quest for even better. Then you are an Audiophile, you are sick, and there is no help besides a new cable or footer. So perhaps it's more of how one approaches the subject? After my daughter was born I kept the same system for 25 years, but since she is grown I've moved and started all over again, and I don't see me ever reaching a point of being finished. It truly is mental illness. A friend once told me that an Audiophile was just an intellectual couch potato.

I'm shopping for a new amp right now. And I'm already thinking that once I have that, I'll be needing a new preamp. And once I have that, I may want to upgrade my phono preamp. Perhaps a new cartridge for the 'table in there somewhere? Once all that is said and done, if I'm still not happy, I'll sell the speakers and amps and start over. Not to mention I've got some designs for home made speakers I'd like to make come warmer weather. And I've got some plans to make more of these DIY power cables for the whole rig. That's not even including any new feet or interesting tweak I may come across during that time. Finished? What's that like?

Loverly Toshiba sr 370 you have as well.Good choice in those templars I had mk3 crusaders for a while you had to have those up loud to get any bass coming through though

All in all Im Very happy currently. The Toshiba, as always, is very underrated. Such an impressive beast.
The ruarks are fantastic too. Such a big sound from relatively small floorstanders ! Great speakers.

I would say I am really. It's a modest system but what I have put together sounds pretty good to my ears. I mean I have heard high end stuff on occassion and have been very, very impressed. But I guess my take on it is that despite having a desire for something really special I don't have heaps of cash to throw at it. So to avoid feeling disappointed or disillusioned I don't read too many reviews and I keep reminding myself that what I have sounds pretty good.

Very Happy with both my systems sure is impressive to me on this budget i'm sure you could spend ££££'s and not have this level of Sound Quality and thats a FACT.
I'm having bits in and bits on for fun but both first and second systems have remained the same since late last year and thats a record
I have EX amount of equipment here and i love it all in my own way the fun side is a joy for me different kit can open a new world on a budget i look at what i have and ive spent very little to what some people do i'm blessed really i am....:)
