Hey Guys

I've got an itch to try a these classic wharfedale speakers  i'm looking for a pair of 3's...Cosmetic condition not a problem if a bit tired BUT MUST BE IN FULL WORKING ORDER WITH ORIGINAL DRIVERS.

I've not got much to spent on a pair this is just to try. Due to car issues im stuck to the local bournemouth area at present.

Price for a pair would be no more the £50....i know clean ones are in the £150 range on ebay..

What do you have......check your man caves / sheds:lol:

Thank You

The old Dovedales are good fun Dan.

If you can't find any, the alternative is a pair of Goodmans Magnum K2. As long as the vinyl skin hasn't lifted from the bass driver cone.

I've still got these if you fancy them but we'd need a way to get them to you:

Irritatingly, there was a pair of Dovedales in a charity shop locally a few months ago, but I didn't have room for them at the time and they are gone now.

Yeah - that will be our local ebay resale chap. Happens quite a lot but that's how he makes his living so I'm not too fussed.
I do think it reflects badly on sellers though if they agree a deal and then go back on it.

Make shift stands at present guys as they were in mid air on my others far to high and heavy for them - these are much more open now sound lovely :) testing with the usual Pink Floyd , UB40 early stuff , Steely Dan , Jon & Vangelis & more and the results i love them their fun old buses but i was in for a surprise with their size  Photos as promised the covers are a nightmare - these do not have the adjusters for the Treble & Mid they are indeed earlier then the ones in the listing as the photos is not the same  but their are early pair which is more desirable i payed the market value in the end with £20 petrol added to the £50 they need a little work to the cabs but they were one owner from new who remembers his dad buying them from Tottenham court road.:) Thats all for now chaps - back to listening and settling in for the evening no boot sale tomorrow as im skint now. Im officially out of room now

Hi Geoff

Go on then i will take them....the camera is full at present so cant get any more pictures on their -

I have discovered that these have the early green bass units which are know for causing trouble with going hard and brittle - How do i check for this how should they feel if normal should their be movement in the cone also? Any thoughts anyone?

walpurgis
03-06-2017, 17:48
Being a sealed cabinet with a big bass diaphragm, there should be a far bit of resistance if you push gently on the cones. I'd ignore any scare stories about these. I've known a few people who had them for years and no bother. The only thing to watch is blowing the tweeter by giving the speakers too much wellie. But you'd have to be going silly to do that. They go plenty loud enough!

It might pay to rotate the bass drivers 180 degrees to offset any suspension sag though.

Hi Geoff

Yes their their good to go i Wont be blasting them too loud as with most of my gear all used between 2 and 4 on the amp thanks for the advice re rotation too. PS re the Tannoys - My mum picked up a pair of IIILZ's from Poole stadium for £3 in 2010...:) not sure you can beat that:) those were the days sadly gone not out of stupidity....

TazSob
03-06-2017, 18:56
They look to be in fairly good condition for their age. I've got a few pairs of one owner from new speakers and they usually be well looked after. I would do as Geoff recommends with the driver and leave the cabs as they are, adds to their character imo.

walpurgis
03-06-2017, 19:01
Your mum did well there! :) Hope she's still got them. The Japs are paying fortunes for them now.

Paid £66 a pair for my first two sets of brand new IIILZ's. But that was around 1972! :D

My current and now immaculate Cheviot II speakers were £500 nearly five years ago and I spent about £100 refurbishing them and bunging new surrounds on. They were a fair bargain nonetheless. Worth maybe twice that now. God, they sound gorgeous!!

Lovely Geoff....Still got hopes for the ones local he said if no bids we can work an arrangement out for buying them:)

PS back to the wharfedales - I really need some decent stands for them any suggestions - Could they be used on their sides pondering with the idea their at ear level with my normal ones? ive eyed up some target stands on ebay..:) any thoughts - Im thinking of changing the room and just having these on for the time being..:) They love Technics power - The musical fidelity is is fine but the technics grips them more...any thoughts on this guys...the stands?

I have currently put them side ways on my current stands safe to say they sound much better they look very good to be honest i have taken a picture..

They are now sounding very nice clean with extended sound stage that was not present before the bass is also tighter just about to play some reggae 12'S :) . Notice the Sony STR 6046 has come home - the guy who bought it from me never used it so listed it at £20 what he payed me...happy to have it home i missed it..:) gonna put in on the weekend...

I'm looking into recapping them and getting them upgraded people have done..

Pondering hoe to get the best from these old beasts they sound slightly cloudy at present I dont have a set of low enough stands could this be the problem or maybe their not for me but want to try all options.. Thinking of using something Vintage Pioneer SA 6300 , Quad 33/303 - Quantum 1A100 / Sony TA 88 / Luxman 507X / Yamaha CR 820 / Sony STA 6046 / NAD 3020 / Teleton 206B / Carbon Trinity Valve Dock /

Maybe they dont suit my room as i do have a lot of clutter about maybe this is holding them back I'm thinking of clearing all and having just a big pair of speakers IE these on with 2 lots of amplifiers but what does suit them suggestions more then welcome and placement thoughts

The Dovedale III never sounded "clouded" to me Dan. They have always sounded well enough balanced to me, if not the last word in resolution.

There's one ommission from your amp list, the Trio KA-2000A. It's a little gem, very open and lucid. And it will work fine with the Wharfedales.

I tried one a while back through my Tannoys and was gobsmacked at how well it sounded.

Why not? They're good quality drivers. They'll probably have a version of the super 3 tweeter which is quite a nice broadband unit. And the bass driver may well have doped fabric surrounds that last a very long time.
