This one's a very long shot.... I doubt there's much call for this, and even fewer people willing to spend the potentially £thousands involved...
If anyone is interested in having replacement improved audio electronics built for their reel to reel machine, I am willing to undertake the work. Valve replay amplifiers for an A80 for instance...
If AOS members are also involved in more specialised R2R sites then feel free to disseminate the info further.

Jez,

Custom replay and record electronics would add a real high end spice to a R2R machine. As you say, it would be a significant 4 figure sum. That's what the US King Cello and Doshi kit goes for. Would work for a really committed R2R enthusiast with a large budget. Would be excellent for an A80 as the electronics were not as good as the transport or perhaps a Technics 1500. You could try What's Best Forum or Audio Nirvana as those guys in the US spend a lot on their gear.

I am very happy with the electronics on my Sony APR 5000 series machines, which sound better than my Studer A 807. Sadly I am spending my money on 15ips masters now. Good luck

Charlie

I'd not looked into any extant kit along those lines but I see this Doshi pre amp is a mere $16,995.00:eek: I think I can undercut that by a huge amount:)

All "just an idea".... it's too niche to actually go ahead and make anything so it would be to order only and zero chance of hearing before buying. I'm confident that I can match or beat anything available though ;)

I'm sure that you could build a fabulous tape head and report amp for much less than the USD17k for the Doshi. But a big reason why the Doshi is so expensive is the marketing and cost of exhibiting at places like AXPONA, RMAF etc. I can't imagine anyone selling any more than single figure units of these. Pro recording studios can't afford this, unless it's something like AIR in its heyday. I would love to hear one, but sadly my priorities are more music now, rather than gear. Good luck, as I am sure that it would sound stellar.

Well quite a few thread views so hopefully the message will get out there that I can offer such things:) I may offer an upgrade service for PR99's etc if there is a demand, i.e upgraded replay amp cards etc.
