A very happy new year play mates. got to admit once you separated the wheat from the chaff it was one of the most pleasing hootenanny's for a long time thoroughly enjoyed it. despite the big band adding James Bond overtones to everything. Gregory Porter and Sea Sick Steve stealing the show though i have to admit that ABC were excellent. Martin Fry not shying away from any of the high notes. Chaka Kahn was a little worrying clad in rubber and needing some of the air letting out. I loved Caravan Palace. Roy Wood however, scored high on the sympathy vote though very nostalgic. Imelda May, well , bloody hell, she was great :clap: A great alternative methinks to Robbie Williams and expensive fireworks display.
UB40 seems to be sponsored by Greggs judging by his belly. A bit pub singer methinks. great to hear a Hohner Clavinet D6 again though. john Cooper Clarke i simply can't resist. Wonderful stuff. Well done Jools and aunty Beeb. It may not have been to everyones taste but i loved it. Christine and the queens version of the Terence Trent Darby classic "Sign Your Name Across My Heart2 i thought was excellent though Gregory Porter's duo with rag and bone man topped the lot! A lot of joy to be found amidst the revelry here.:)

What of new years day/ well, i think i might just dig out my ABC lp's. All the best folks.

Thanks for this Floyddroid, I'm away working at the moment but my wife recorded it for me; plenty to look forward to there, in fact I have to say that the entire past series of Later with Jools has seen a marked improvement in the general standard of guest, I've even bought a few decent CDs based on performances from the program:cool:

I've always disliked Joolls Holland and found him irritating. I don't usually like his choice of artists either, so I never tune in. ABC would've been the only act that interested me but not sufficiently to have to sit through the rest of it. New Year's Eve TV is always poor and this year was no exception.

Agree about Holland, I just zone out when he is talking and back in when the music starts again, but is it really his choice of artists? Whoever chooses them it is usually 90% not for me. Although I did get into Taj Mahal, Flaming Lips and a few others from that show over the years.

Glad it's not just me he irritates. His piano playing winds me up no end too. He's one person I try to avoid at all costs. I'm not sure about the music being his choice. My error in making that assumption without knowing for sure.

Liked his ska band and have a couple of cds of their work. But generally im not into him otherwise and didnt like the hoots much. Rather watch coranation st ;). Well, maybe not.

Yet another who doesn't like Jools Holland presenting.
He can play a piano, but rarely chooses anything good to play.

I also find the sound quality is off in some way.

Still watch it to see if there is anything worth investigating.

I've been a fan of both 'Later' and of the 'Hootenanny' for years. Not for Jools of course, like others his presentation annoys me and his 'interviews' are downright sycophantic, feeble and embarassing. I watch the programmes to learn about new artists, and have to agree that this year's Hootenanny was one of the best.

The Hootenanny has been crap the past few years and like so many here Jools sometimes gets right up my nose. However, you can't escape the guy is talented. 2016's Hootenanny however, i found interesting and very enjoyable.

I had had a few drinks by that point. Perhaps it was the rosy glow of nostalgia. Or something. At least she has some good tunes unlike 90% of the rubbish that gets on that show. Christine & The Queens? Don't give up yer day job sweetheart.

I can't stand Chaka Khan but your description made me look :) Reminded me of a balloon sculpture! At least she's had that revolting gap in her teeth fixed.

In my humble opinion, Later... with Jools Holland is at best bland with the occasional interesting act. I mean how many times do we need to see Tom Bloody Jones on the show! On the other hand I don't mind Jools Holland.

Bring back The Whistle Test and/or The Tube I say. British music television needs a right good kick up the jacksie!
