Now that I finally have an effective record cleaning solution, I am finding that my record weight/clamp is no longer essential to my vinyl listening pleasure. I would guess it's the fact that the needle has a cleaner - lower friction - record contract, and that means it no longer needs such a strong coupling to the mat and platter.
Now, I'm listening to vinyl so much more, I feel a little record mat experimentation in the offing. It will be interesting to see how different mats affect things. I wonder if some mats will get more benefit from the weight. I'm currently using a rubber mat.
