Hi Folks,

New member intro here. I came across this forum whilst searching for information to help solve my Tannoy problem, but more of that later.

I'm a music lover first (blues, jazz, Steely Dan, Genesis and 70's Philly soul), and equipment nut second. I've owned many bits and pieces of hifi, some new, some secondhand, some home built, since becoming enthusiastic about audio electronics as a teenager. I was an Engineer at the BBC (Broadcasting House and Maida Vale) in the 80s so know how good recorded music can sound with due care in the signal path.

Nowadays I'm a live sound engineer in and around Bournemouth specialising in Big Band Swing, Jazz and occasional funk, and have a library of live digital recordings from gigs over the past 10 years.

My home system is fairly modest with a Sony 'La Scala' CD and pre-amp, feeding a Class D Audio power amp (currently on a piece of MDF waiting to be assembled into a case), feeding a home-refurbished pair of Tannoy Devons bought on eBay a couple of years ago. There's no esoteric cables or anything like that in the system, although as I happen to believe the lowest-resistance path between amp and speakers is important, the cables are Van Damme 4 x 4mm sq, so are as thick as a garden hose. It all sounds OK, with fine detail and reasonable imaging, but I'm a long way from audio contentment yet.

Anyway, I hope this is sufficient. I'll share my current Tannoy dilemma shortly..18896

Hi Pete, welcome to AOS. I have spent many a time sat behind a front of house desk, also on stage desk too. Good times. Spent many a time down the BBC studios with big swing bands, god can still smell the feet.... don't know what was worse getting all the band members to take off their shoes so the mics didn't pick up all their foot tapping along, or the smell of all the feet after shoes removed. There are a few members here from Bournemouth. Enjoy the forum.

Hi Pete, and welcome.

I'm interested in your "Tannoy problem". I have a pair of Devons, my feeling is that the HPD315 really needs a bigger cabinet.

As it happens, I'm having Christmas dinner with a BBC Engineer friend and his family. It was only this morning that I was invited.

Hi Pete. Welcome to AOS.

You've come to the right place for opinions on Tannoy speakers. If you have questions, either the Blank Canvas area or the Past Masters area would be good places to start a thread and describe the problem. I'm sure it's nothing that hasn't been seen here before.

Class D amps seem to suit Tannoys quite well. I've tried this myself.

Keep us informed as to how your system is coming together. We like to hear what people are doing.

Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Hi Alex,

Yes! Exactly!! That's the nub of it really. Rather than expand on this here, I'll start a new thread as Geoff suggests, and see what folks think.

Cheers, PA.

Hi Pete, as a Londoner I used to love coming to Bournemouth. In the summers of the early 70's going to come great Disco's like Chelsea Village and Maison Royale. Saw Junior Walker at Chelsea Village and some other acts as well. Saw many guest DJ's off the radio. Good times. Welcome by the way.

Last time I was in Bournemouth I travelled there in a nearly new Austin Vanden Plas Metro. That's quite a few years ago.

The time before was many decades earlier, in an Isetta Bubble Car.
