One bake off i would love to hear is between a Pioneer PL71 and a Sony PS6750 direct drive turntable. I recently had a very brief listen to a Sony though i have to admit it had an inexpensive mm cartridge in the sharp end. Any views on this here? The only downside to the Sony in my view is an extra mechanism on the tone arm lift. It still sounds pretty darn good once the arm is in use. The one at Mibo sounded great.:)

Also try and get a listen to the Toshiba SR-370 Steve.

It looks plainer but is a fine Direct Drive heavyweight of very high quality and capability.

How would you describe it's tonal/sonic qualities?

What a nice choice to have to make! I've not heard the Sony, but the PL-71 has to be one of the most musical record players ever made.

You should try a Toshiba as Geoff says. I had a Sony PSx70. I now wouldn't go back.

I lived with a PL-71 for a couple of years. Gorgeous midrange (which is where most of the tune is, IMHO). Nothing else to be done with her other than plug 'n' play, as I believe The Kids today say. Only moved her on when I found a Townshend Rock which is another competitively priced second hand buy.

Trick Question........

2112......no.
1210......yup.

That is, if you aint in a Rush........!!

Depends which ugly wires you use to connect your 1210 to your rig. Sometimes they can kill the sound. As for Rush, I couldn't agree more.:)

I've owned the 6750 and it is a superb deck. I used it with carts ranging from a VMS30 MkII to a 2M Black and ANIQ3 and it handled each with aplomb.

Pretty neutral sounding, rock solid timing, bombproof and a joy to use.

Cheers Mike, That's helpful. Do you think it would take a Denon 103?

Both very fine decks but I'd go PS-6750 due to the arm. Out of interest, what do you have against the cueing device?!

I now own your old 6750, Mike. Bombproof? You tested it with bombs?!

Anyway, it survived and is now a fixture in the living-room system. Like you, I use an Audio Note mm cart on it, and for the money, as a play-and-forget unit, I think it'd be hard to beat tbh.

The cue lever is towards the front of the deck indicating that some kind of Rod or wire mechanism is involved in the lifting of the arm? Happy to be advised here though.

It does indeed have a linkage to the cueing platform under the arm. Forgive me, but I'm still struggling to see the problem!

Yes, Steve, that lever on the 6750 connects (only) to a normal cueing platform ... the 'normal' lifting pad sort under the arm-tube, which raises to lift it off the record, and drops away when the arm is in use ... like most other arms I've had (SME etc). It's not some fancy linkage, directly connected to the arm or bearings or anything fancy, like on automatic decks. It works well. :D

Cheers Peter. That is exctly what i wanted to know and very helpful.

Hi Adam

I was just a little concerned that there may have been a linkage of some kind that may have affected the performance of the arm. However, Peter just put my mind to rest. I would be interested in your veiws of the turntable Adam. Would it cope with a decent MC?

There was a Benz SL on my 6750 when I got it. Had Denon 103/r, Shelter 501 and various AT MC's. I primarily used Sumiko headshell (added weight for 103)

All worked well and the TT got a lot more use than some other highly regarded decks I've had here, I've recently sold mine on (with first refusal for its return) because of a Voyage to Chesterfield

I think the deck was built with Sony's own MC's in mind?

Yes, absolutely - I used various Ortofon MCs on mine. Also the standard magnesium headshell is very good, which leaves more money for the cartridge!

I restored a PL-71, a wonderful turntable. :) Thread here -- http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/analogue-source/266390-restoration-modification-pioneer-pl-71-turntable.html

I remember doing a simultaneous listening test with the PL-71 (+ Benz Micro Gold) versus my CD rig (Linn Karik III + Numerik via Roxburgh PMF6s) both playing the same album and flicking the source switch to and fro. The midrange of the PL-71 was more realistic, with string and piano reverberating more naturally.

I'd got the PL-71 as an alternative to my Garrard 401 (yes, really...) when I realised that to do justice to the 401 was going to be a journey of several years of saving up for a slate plinth, servicing etc whereas the PL-71 with capacitors replaced is a finished article for comparatively little cost. It seems very well engineered and finished. I only moved on when I came across a beaten-up Rock for very little and embarked on a labour of love to restore her...

It certainly would cope with an MC cart Steve, even a pretty decent one.

Lol. No Peter, no bombs, other than the A-Bomb in Wardour Street and Bomb the Bass :)

Small world. I'm pleased that you are enjoying it. They really are super for the money, up there with your beloved TD125's I would say.

............and I was the intermediary between Mike and Peter. :) An excellent deck indeed, great sound and a pleasure to use. The only reason I sold it was because I'm compelled to fettle and I didn't want to spoil the Sony. The JVC flying saucer I bought is probably a little better now it has a better plinth and a 12" Jelco arm but the arm on the Sony is excellent - I ran a Zyx R50 Bloom with no problems.
