With 2017 just around the corner I was wondering what projects people have lined up ?

I have 2 in mind :)

No1

Get my Garrard 401 TT put back together and running

No 2

I have been toying with the idea of building a pair of speakers :eyebrows:

No interest in buying gear now.

Yup. 3 studio R2R machines is enough. No need to upgrade anything else in my system - am a very happy bunny :)

1. Finishing off the "Lenco Reference" deck.
2. Decoupling my Garrard 301 bearing and maybe experimenting with a bentonite plinth.
3. Maybe some monoblocks, either valve or SS.
4. Maybe some new SPU's.
5. Having fun with more vintage and SPPV products.

None whatsoever. After 2016 has robbed us of many an important cultural figure, so it has pilfered my wallet with alarming regularity.

After a shameful year of box swapping, my modest set up is at a place at which thorough enjoyment has arrived.

2017 will see vastly more music consumed and appreciated, I promise.

Looks like you have 'arrived'. Well done - there are some here who are still looking for this desirable state of affairs, and have been years in the process!

I only intend to maybe do a couple of DIY projects, as I already have all the bits. But I can't think of anything to buy because I have the system exactly where I want it.

(unless of course a member wants to tempt me with an Aleph 3 power amp at a modest price :))

Copies eh?
Nope
I've been building and refining these quadratic tapered expanding quarter wave transmission line speakers since I came up with them in 2006. These are another refinement.

Here are my current ones at the Audio Talk Owston meet earlier this year:

After hearing my TT through someone else's speakers today I'm thinking of giving up on my vinyl setup, sell it off and stream via Internet or my nas only as my speakers are just not good enough for the front end and the sound I want, can't change them for various reasons so at the moment I'm by close to giving up and downsizing it all as I feel for the money I've spent it's just not good enough, and it's the speakers that are letting the whole system down, serious thinking to be done over Xmas and I'll see what the new year brings.

dont be getting too hasty Mike:). You might regret it. But I know what you mean; it can be frustrating to get right sound, and streaming is very handy and good too. Small speakers are hard to find that do the business.

Selling up with a system like this

Technics 1210 Mk 5 modded with Mike New Bearing, Paul Hynes SR7-EHD PSU, Sounddamped Steel Isoplatmat, Isonoe Feet, Magna Audio Ebony armboard, Mission 774 Arm fitted with Audio Technica 33PTG II - TQ Claymore Amplifier, Firebottle Vivant Phono Stage, PMC Twenty .21 Speakers, Partington Dreadnought Stands, B&W PV1 Subwoofer,

I thought PMC 20.21 speakers were rated

Finally putting all my studio bits together. Akai S1100 sampler, original Nord Rack synth, Yamaha TX81z synth, Roland MIDI keyboard, Atari ST with Notator as a sequencer Technics SL1210 and a Pioneer DV-505 for analogue and digital sampling.

I also have an Exposure III / IV combo and a pair of Royd Sorcerers, and my Sony MDR-V6 headphones that I'll be using in the studio, well, a corner in my bedroom. ;)

No plans for the main system aside from removing the Mana Sound Table and replacing it with a wall shelf for the turntable.

I fancy trying a change of speaker this year. PMC's are on my list as I like the transmission line sound of my current speakers. Other than that a few "upgrades" to the techie in terms of a power supply will probably all I will be able to finance.

No major equipment buys in '17, spent a lot the last couple of years so want to make the most of what I've currently got.

Biggest thing is possibly getting my SME V arm rewired?
Will call the vinyl setup done and dusted at that.

One thing I'll definately do is continue to look for ways to improve my computer audio setup.
My music was stored on an 'all in one' PC that I also use for work, over the last couple of days I built a dedicated box just for choons.
Everythings been purposed towards that and it's a real improvement, so looking at further ways to improve things.

First up is ditching ethernet as much as I can and going over to an optical network, do that early in the New Year.

CageyH
16-12-2016, 17:23
My only plans for next year is a set of Firebottle monoblocks.
I don't like making plans, and the last few years have seen many unplanned changes in my system. I am pretty happy with it now, but he monoblocks just add a little extra.

I have played with cartridges and cables and I am now in a happy place.
After the monoblocks are done, I will concentrate on adding to the vinyl collection.

from his speel

The Little Audio Company are a fresh new retailer based in the vibrant bustle of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, with easy access by road or rail. We are a 15 minute walk from New Street Station, and the Bullring and Grand Central shopping centres, or a few minutes on the tram.

We are intending to be a little different from many conventional hi-fi retailers, hence the decision to adopt an appointment only approach. This allows the customer to be the focus of attention minus all the usual retail interruptions. Your booked time is spent purely with you. Opening hours are an indication of when the phone will be manned, and aren't necessarily fixed with regards to booked demonstrations.

Well it's only taken me 3 years to plug the turntable in after my move from the north east to the north west, some may say i'm lazy, i call it careful planning:eyebrows::eyebrows:. Anyway after plugging in the afore mentioned TT I found myself routing around for my trusty VMS 20 mk2, shock horror I can't find it anywhere, so i'm left with the not so great OM5, I've already secured myself a VMS 30 mk2 with cap and barely used stylus, i'm waiting on it being delivered, probably after Christmas now, but i'm in the market for maybe a 2m Black or if the VMS 30 hits the spot, then maybe a better phono stage, at the moment i'm just using the phono input on the back of the A/V amp i have, it's ok but probably the weakest link, any suggestions ???

I have 2 things planned for next year, the first is fairly simple, swap my Majik-i for a Kairn. And then treat myself to what I very much hope will be my last turntable, a Gyrodec. Then I live in hope I shall be done, dusted and happy with my set up.

Back on topic ....

I've got a pair of interconnects on the way to try out.
Other than that I have no plans or intentions or even unnattainable dreams.

Perfection has been attained! Yay.
Well, no.
They may not be perfect, and I am sure they wouldn't be everyone's choice - but I now have electronics and speakers and cables that suit me, personally, just fine and that I am completely comfortable with. To my humble ears my system is entirely musically satisfying.

Maybe it's an age thing, but my hifi wanderlust has reduced to an unheard of minimum.

I dare say I'll start tinkering in a few months maybe. But I have no idea at all what with! :)

None of this 'just listen to the music' nonsense for me.

I am going to build an active system with digital crossover. Firstly with some IMF TLS50 and then build some custom speakers (so much easier with DSP). They will be a three way with 18'' bass drivers, The bass cab will be very large, the limit being the size of the door to the room. The aim will be to equal or better something like the JBL 4365 for a fraction of the price. DSP has the potential to deliver this, I reckon.

That may take longer than just a year, though....

I wish I hadn't read this thread as I feel compelled to list my audio jobs for 2017 and the number of them is now depressing me! Oh well, here goes...

1. Refurbish Leak 3090 speakers
2. Refurbish B&O Beovox Penta speakers
3. Refurbish Celestion Ditton 25 speakers
4. Refurbish B&O Beovox 5000Mk3 speakers
5. Modify Goodmans B-Max crossover so it works properly.
6. Repair Thorens TD-224 and have a plinth made for it
7. Repair Technics RS-9900 cassette deck
8. Have a plinth made for Garrard 201B and find an arm for it
9. Finish re-furbishing Technics SL-P1200 CD player
10. Replace the tape counter belt on Beocord 2400 cassette deck
11. Service and repair Tascam 122 cassette deck
12. Repair Proton AA-1150 power amp

and almost inevitably...

13. Buy more non-working stuff and fail to get round to doing anything with it!

but finally and on a cheerier note:

14. Join 'Vinyl Me, Please'!

Recap both of my Revox PR99s

Build or buy a new DAC

Experiment with damping the motor on my Pioneer turntable

I'm only going to set myself two goals for this year.
The first is to finish my DDDAC, REALLY looking forward to this, its been in pieces for too long now. The second is to build another pair of OB speakers. I currently use the Lampizator P17 DIY OB speakers and I plan to build the Lampizator P24's I have most of the drivers and the woofers on on their way to me from Russia as we speak. When the DDDAC is complete this will be my next project.

Recap by Ditton 44s
Recap the motor in my PL-71 turntable
Build new crossovers for the speakers in my main system
Build a proper music server (pc based)
Storage for my music collection

I have to fit all that in between renovating the house and landscaping the garden. Think I'll get any of the above done?

The aim will be to equal or better something like the JBL 4365 for a fraction of the price. DSP has the potential to deliver this, I reckon.

That may take longer than just a year, though....

Sounds like a great plan Martin, active amplification is something that interests me also

I plan to sell my megabuck system.......that sounds shit.
And.....
Buy a cheap system that sounds great.

Spend the difference on hookers, drugs n concerts.....!!!

Sounds like a plan. You are lucky to have a mega buck system to sell you jammy devil.

My main music plans for 2017 revolve around making the most of what I now have and stop wanting more. The purchase of more vinyl though will never stop.

Pretty much my view too.

I've got some spare isodynamic tweeters for the leaks
If the refurb involves replacing any.

I wish I hadn't read this thread as I feel compelled to list my audio jobs for 2017 and the number of them is now depressing me! Oh well, here goes...

1. Refurbish Leak 3090 speakers
2. Refurbish B&O Beovox Penta speakers
3. Refurbish Celestion Ditton 25 speakers
4. Refurbish B&O Beovox 5000Mk3 speakers
5. Modify Goodmans B-Max crossover so it works properly.
6. Repair Thorens TD-224 and have a plinth made for it
7. Repair Technics RS-9900 cassette deck
8. Have a plinth made for Garrard 201B and find an arm for it
9. Finish re-furbishing Technics SL-P1200 CD player
10. Replace the tape counter belt on Beocord 2400 cassette deck
11. Service and repair Tascam 122 cassette deck
12. Repair Proton AA-1150 power amp

and almost inevitably...

13. Buy more non-working stuff and fail to get round to doing anything with it!

but finally and on a cheerier note:

14. Join 'Vinyl Me, Please'!

As I'm content with the set up I will be selling more kit now surplus to requirements, like my Haden Boardman valve phonostage recently modified with a volume control. I bought my Sony receiver while the phonostage was being worked on by my tech guy Dave. I have listened to it in the office set up and it's still very good. Still have a couple of lenco's to build but don't think it will be in 2017 as I have a new toy, a 1957 Ford Popular that I will be tidying up in between driving.
I will still be taking an interest in the serial box swappers on here.

Shouldn't be too bad as it actually had a full service from John Caswell before I bought it. However a major component of the changing mechanism was missing at the time, which I've now sourced. I just need to strip it apart to fit this bit and it should be fine. After all, how difficult can it be......?!

Replinth a Lenco L75 and have a go at making a 12" unipivot arm to fit on it.

Hifi put on the backburner for a few months whilst updating the AV system following a comment from my son that the system was so last decade-cheeky bugger.
New Denon amp to set up over the xmas break followed by two upward firing speakers for DTS-X stuff. Then a new 55 inch tv-probably a Samsung quantum dot one about February of March.

Assume you'll keep the DAC / transport though due to SACD limited catalogue? Am not even convinced it's a better format than good redbook / CD, and then at the contentious 24bit / 96kHz (I think the masterings are different in themselves to 16/44.1) you're hitting the same measurements as SACD albeit with heavier handed methods than massive oversampling of SACD / DSD.

Sell almost all my hifi. Just put down a deposit for a Devialet ex-demo from a main dealer (40% discount), will be upgraded to the new 250 Pro and there is a free UnPnP/DNLA upgrade for 2016 upgrade orders. Going to the store to sort that tomorrow.

So will be able to sell monoblocks, phono amp, passive pre-amp, DAC, streamer, its external PSU and loads of cables. Thats 7 boxes to get rid of, replaced by a wedge of aluminium. That will leave me with a turntable, its external 33/45 power supply and a P3 power plant. With a bit of luck the whole thing will be a cash neutral change.

Waiting for my The Truth linestage to finally arrive and hopefully be selling my Dave Slagle Autoformer linestage. Grab a second power amp, valve or maybe Accuphase so I can finally send my Cary 805 monoliths in for an upgrade and still have music. Continue buying vinyl.

I built quite a few pairs of LS3/5a clones in 2016, now all with satisfied owners.
Mainly to UK destinations, but also a pair in South Korea and another pair in Italy.

So, for 2017, I think I'll carry on with '3/5a clones...

I have a pair of Radford 'Bookshelf' speakers to collect and work on.
A refurbished pair to a AOS member last Autumn.

Crazy as it may seem, my system is still not up and running! It's been through quite alot of changes over the years and is probably heading towards its most sensible setup (in years). It will still take up quite alot of square footage, but nowhere near what it has done previously!

There's alot of work to be done with our property, which I confess has suffered neglect whilst I 've been collectiing this lot! Now there's a conflict of interests and my money just doesn't stretch far enough for it all! I could just set it all up and be done with it... but that's not me!

I cannot see much change for the next six months at least, probably near twelve months in all probability. Only got a couple of Bucking Transformers, a DAC and some Cables to sort... but I hope 2017 will be the year!

I myself will be somewhat regretfully selling the Philips and buying a cdp with a valve output section.

Beyond that it's all rolling for me.

Serious bit of kit that Lee, sure it'll sound great.
Trieda lot of different 5687 valves in my own amp and found the TungSol black plate D-Getter's sounded the best to me.
Langrex did them.

Mike,
Im running the same amp...have you considered cans-the headphone section is outstanding and will easily cope with top notch headphones. You will still get the best out of your vinyl rig.

Speaker wise if its aesthetics the other half objects to look at Electric beach frugels- you can sit down with yer good lady and design a pair she likes...work really well with what you have.

A wee visit to the west may give you some options!!!
