The latest cinema sound processing calls for speakers either ceiling mounted or upward firing. Ceiling mounted is, of course, not practical for most people but upward firing is possible.
There are a number of manufacturers now producing them but the cynic in me thinks that the design will be little different from a normal speaker laid on its back and angled by 20 degrees.
Anyone experimented with this approach? Annoyingly, I recently gave away a nice pair of Mission speakers so will have to buy some to try it out.

Do you mean speakers sat on the floor and angled towards the listener? If so, I tried it with my usher s520's, was kind of ok

How about some Carlsson/Sonab speakers? Modern alternatives are available in the form of Larson speakers and i think Audio Pro made some very suitable ones...
Qube they're called:

The Sonab's are too big and too expensive-there is a pair on fleabay with the tweeters not working for £400!
I already have 8 speakers in the living room so the next two have got to be discrete. I was thinking about buying a couple of full range drivers and sticking them in a box.

What is this you are building, some sort of 10.2 system?

I mean are the upward-firing speakers some additional speakers to the usual ones? Or is this some new trend in HT?

I thought of the new Neat Iota Alpha speakers (https://www.avforums.com/review/neat-iota-alpha-floorstanding-speaker-review.12996) when I saw this thread. Not really in the right price bracket though.

Are they really upward firing? They have upward facing drivers, but also use diffusers to make them more horizontally omnidirectional.

Thanks, makes sense now.

apparently the set up goes from a basic 5.1.2. 5 being front left, right, centre and surround left and right.. one being the subwoofer.. and two being the ceiling mounted, or 2 "upward firing" speakers.
depending on the size of your room/theatre it can go upto 64 speakers.
but i think basically the third number is the amount of extra speakers for ambient sounds. so a 7.2.4 would be front L and R, centre, 2 surround and 2 surround back speakers, 2 subwoofers and 4 "atmos enabled" ceiling mounted and/or upward firing speakers....confused???? i am..lol.
that being said..
i watched transformers age of extinction on blu ray in dolby atmos on a standard 5.1 dolby digital A/V receiver and it looked and sounded foookin awesome.
hopr this helps
cheers
Mike.

Personally I don't think I will play around with Atmos much. DTS-X, from what I have read, is a much better algorithm.
I will be interested to see how it processes non-DTX-S soundtracks as there won't be much available for a while.
