what platter mat for a direct drive turntable?

Well i thought id saved my pioneer mat but alas its past its best,so what do you guys recommend?
im currently using the linn felt jobby which isnt bad but perhaps it can be bettered?ive tried the reso mat and thats a no-no.

The pioneer platter rings like a bell when tapped,the original rubber mat stops this dead when placed on it.does this matter? ie im not tapping it when im playing a record!
With so many mats on the market id like opinions on whats best,Isoplatmat? Achromat?
maybe you technics guys could advise?

ive just had a fiddle with the vta and the reso mat doesn't sound too bad actually,any thoughts on the Isoplatmat?

Crystal ones seem to do the job well I'm told, although heavy, so need to have a strong motor.

Analog studio crystal mat, works excellently on my 1210, it has beaten lots of platter mats including Achromat 5mm, Resomat, Felt, Sorbothane, Standard technics mat, Tenuto gunmetal platter mat, Garrard 301, Cork and the Gimp mat. Yep I've tried a few!

I really like the look of the Analog Studio Crystal Mat but I worry that putting 1kg on a 40 year old motor is possibly putting it under a certain amount of unnecessary strain. I went for the SDS mat as it's half the weight and does eliminate any platter ringing. I don't like the SDS cover though and use the OL mat instead. At 1mm thick its ideal and it looks good too.

If the Pioneer is belt drive then forget the Crystal mat if it's DD you will have no problem with an additional 1kg.

I prefer my copper mat to the denon rubber mat on my DP80. In fact I liked the copper mat on all my turntables, direct or idler drive.

I use the Puresound Tenuto mat. It's excellent on the technics sp10. It's quite expensive, limited, but also highly sought after so doesn't lose value.
.You can find crystal (fancy name for glass) mats on eBay often second hand. Be wary of copper microseiki mats on eBay - almost always fake and quality is an issue, just a slight variance in flatness means all your records play warped.

Most people who use glass platters end up putting cork or felt over them - there's a reason.

I know in theory that a big dd motor can cope no problem with an extra kg but I couldn't shake the nagging doubts that the extra load wouldn't be appreciated by such an old motor and bearing. I love the look of the Tenuto. Absolutely gorgeous. I wish I was braver.

NOPE! I've used a Al+Cu platter and Crystal mat to great effect. I hate using cork/felt I've never seen the benefit in over 20TT's that i've owned.

Lol I knew that would cause a rumpus. It's only my opinion. I've tried lots of mats and read and read god knows how many forum posts about them and upgrading as funds would allow.

The general consensus is that each type has a family sound. But rather than me end up in the middle of a war I recommend the OP check all the forums for past opinions about each type. Usually a Google search for an opinion on a specific Mat will lead to forum discussions that explore the main types, rubber, acrylic, glass, metal and even lead and their general qualities.

Each one has its adherents and detractors but you get a good idea about sonic qualities and this can guide you in the right direction for your system and preference sonically. What sounds right in one system may sound very wrong in another.

My previous statement that most users bought felt or cork to cover the glass was a little sweeping and should have read *many*. My apologies.

think the Nakamichi one was the best...think it was them? expensive but if your drive can handle it should be ok. Again, a bit like cables, everyone has favorite sound traits they look for and some decks prefer differing materials.

I've bought a spectra mat,made of 3 different polymers apparently, I might get an sds mat to damp the platter as well.

That's a different item, this is a platter mat that goes on top of the existing platter to dampen it.

I've also just realised that Jamie isn't talking about a 1210 which is the size of the SDS platter I have so it probably won't fit a Pioneer correctly.
