Noel Edmonds in his prime, during the heydays of the 70s, broadcasting on Radio One (I believe from a hotel room somewhere):

Wonder which cartridge was being used... G800, SC35C or what? :hmm:

One day, I will own one of those T/Ts [and tonearms], and 'pimp' it, as it's an itch I've been wanting to scratch for years! :exactly:

Marco.

P.S Bonus points to anyone who can identify the album being played....

This time Stuart Henry, in the Radio 1 studios from 1969... Note the BBC-modified grey 'Hammerite' Garrard 301 to the left:

Simply awesome - when DJs actually earned their title!

Why is Noel Edmunds not wearing any trousers?

The mind boggles...

Why is Noel Edmunds not wearing any trousers?

I think the key may be the bit inside brackets in the opening post! ;)

Either that, or he's kinky.... It'd have been funnier if it had been ladies knickers :D

I've seen the marketing brochure.

The gates has supposedly the lowest rumble of all idlers, it dosen't the 301/401 are better. The big red switch is Mercury filled :stalks:. This type of deck was very popular in the USA. I may look out for a restoration project at some point.

BTW, both DJs are using AKG D202 microphones. I've got one of those :D

Those arms look like 100% total shite for ham fisted drunk DJs...

Marco
12-12-2016, 12:20
Yes, that's what I thought until I heard one on said T/T! ;)

I also dig the whole 'high-mass' approach to vinyl replay, so the 'crane-like chunkiness' of the Gray suits me perfectly, especially partnered by a nice low-compliance cart, tracking at 4g or so... :eyebrows:

Bass heft? You betcha!! :eek::D

Good stuff, Jo... Now we know why the Top 40 chart shows, broadcast on a Sunday night during the 70s and 80s, used to sound so good!

I thought that's what Marco was drooling over :eyebrows:

I thought it was early Daftee uniform ?

Marco

Ha - I didn't notice it either... Silly, I know, but my focus was on the turntable! :D

FYI, the MKI Daftee Uniform had a fur-lined side access pouch.

(Personally I'd much prefer a Garrard 301, with a Garrard arm.)

I did see this but it's only got the mono-preamp. I was thinking about buying one and then realised I have no room!

Interesting, Barry, and thanks for that, but that one's a little bit ropey looking and I'd also want a Gray arm on it :)

A shit video, especially how dreadfully the guy treats records  but this is the type of thing (and minty condition) I'd be looking for [watch directly on YouTube, so you can see it enlarged]:

It's a different model to the one used by the BBC.

Marco
16-12-2016, 00:06
Not bothered about that, as I'm pretty sure the sound would be virtually identical, providing one was using a Gray arm. Andy (Rexton) mentioned that the Beeb were using Shure M44-7 cartridges with the Gates/Gray combos...

However, I've since discovered that it's a specific one, which is the 1960s white-bodied version, like this:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/NfrQTe.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pnNfrQTej)

Those are reputed to sound different and so much better than the modern variety, and indeed anything in between. Therefore, I'm on the look out for a minty NOS example of such with an (unused) original stylus

One thing I've noticed with those decks is the size od the platter.... it's fookin' huge!

Marco
16-12-2016, 07:54
It's a nice fat 16-incher, mate! You can't beat a bit of GIRTH... :eyebrows:

This video nicely illustrates the humungous nature of the platter and bearing (one of the reasons why the T/T sounds as 'hefty' and powerful as it looks):

Nice old RCA broadcast console there, too! :)

Because nobody presses 16" LPs anymore.
