I have too many DACs so its time to sell these, although I'll probably regret it later. The Chroma on top is standard 43cm wide (iirc) and the Progeny is rack width. The Progeny has the 'A' output stage which is LOUD compared to most DACs so you may need some attenuators if it's too much for your amp. With a passive preamp it won't be an issue. The Chroma is standard output level as best I can tell.

I'd describe the Chroma as neutral and the Progeny as rumbustious, making the Progeny a tad more fun, but the Chroma is probably more acurate. Both are very nice DACs but standard 44/48k definition only. I find they both work best with Toslink inputs and the input selectors are a little scratchy due to age (a slight noise when switching inputs), but otherwise they work fine.

I'm looking for £180 each or £300 for both, cash on collection from Oxford. Insured delivery would be £20 extra but if you buy both I'll find a single box for the both of them. I don't have any original packaging.

Not the right time for me - sorry, but I can say I remember regularly using the Pro Progeny at the time and in my case, finding it to be honest and 'accurate.' Now, I don't know what the configuration was inside (and can't remember what configurations were available), but I loved it at the time and what came out was what seemed to go in compared to the overly dry Krell and sloppy ARC players which were available in Ab Sounds dealers as competition...

Good luck with the sale(s). I do feel that Theta did know what they were doing where 'digital' was concerned and if these two have different 'flavours,' it was deliberate and intentional, not sloppy design :)

Thanks for the feedback David. There's nothing sloppy about them, its just that the Progeny exudes a sense of power that most DACs can only dream of, hence my wondering if its entirely accurate. The Chroma is more traditionally balanced shall we say?

Both excellent DACs. A considerable cut above the average run of the mill stuff. I've owned both and recommend them, especially at these bargain prices.
