View Full Version : Irritating PC Audio problem

This is probably the wrong place to paste this, but never mind...

I use my PC for everything, I have no TV or consoles, so it is in almost constant use, as DVD player, browser, games machine, and when I'm feeling too lazy to change CDs, music library.

This makes the problem I've been having all the more annoying.
This has only recently started happening, but sometimes, seemingly at random there will be a thump in my speakers, and the audio will cut out. This ALWAYS is resolved on a program restart, and I have had this problem with a variety of programs; embedded video in browser, DVDs, games.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I am running Vista, going through a cheap DAC courtesy of Hamish, but the program restart solution suggests to me that the problem is not hardware.... but then what do I know?

Any ideas?

The audio card is faulty. Have you added an additional hardware lately ? A HD, or something ?

If not, try updating your audio card driver. If this doesn't fix it, perhaps you'll need to change the audio card.

Does it still happen if you take the dac out the chain?
I'm sure dimitri is right, but it would at least rule out that being faulty!

cheers guys, unfortunately my drivers are up to date, and no additional hardware has been added.
Good call Truckle, will try that tomorrow, too much fiddling for a sunday night :)
And the other problem is that the problem is very sporadic, it won't happen for ages, and then it might happen several times in quick succession and drive me insane!

If the output to the dac is USB, you can try another USB plug too. Perhaps it's the output plug which is faulty.
Which dac is it, btw ?

Another suggestion is the others draw blanks......

If you have a now redundant sound card as you (I presume) are using USB to output to DAC try removing the Audio Sound Card or if its built into the motherboard see if you can disable it either trough the the Bios or see if there's a jumper on the Motherboard.
