Freezing all day here and even colder now. Only alcohol, deftly administered, can resolve this. Trouble is I have to go outside to get it.

Doesn't bode well for the winter with it being so cold so early in the season. 12 more weeks of this I could do without.

Marco

Freezing? Can't say I notice with my arse parked in front of a roaring log fire! :eyebrows:

Bring on the snow, lol, and make it nice and seasonal!! :exactly:

P.S It was lovely and sunny today here, with blue skies throughout, although undoubtedly chilly. You need some meat on your bones, mate, to fight off the cold ;)

We're probably well in the minority here, but both Del and I love the snow, simply because it's Christmassy... However, save it for Christmas day - let's have a white one this year for the first time in AGES!! :exactly:

Ditto here, apart from the temp. Much colder here, around 5C.

Going into Chester today for lunch with friends, at Telfords Warehouse: http://www.telfordswarehouse.com/ and then to buy some Beaujolais Nouveau from Tanners. Lovely fresh, fruity stuff - we love it! :)

Wish I was there, as that chap in the picture, slowly making my way home from a fun shopping trip, with bags full of goodies to enjoy and share, with a lovely, cosy warm house and my wife ready to greet me when I got in, along with a nice big bowl of comforting home-made minestrone soup, as we cuddle up together and share a bottle of Brunello, beside the glow of the Christmas tree..... :)

Ah, you can't beat a nice winter! ;)

I love dark snowy nights, around Christmas time, where the streets are dimly lit and you can see the twinkly-glow of Christmas tree lights through the windows of houses, illuminating the inky blackness of the night sky, and the chilly freshness of the air makes your nose go red, as you walk by, crunching through snowy pavements on the way home from town, where the magical excitement of Christmas day, and all those presents you'll have to open, and happy times you'll be enjoying with your friends and family, starts to kick in....

It's an image of Christmas Eve I have etched in my memory from childhood. Even though things are different now when you're older, we still always like to make Christmas time feel special :)

Hooray. Solstice, the real winter festival worth celebrating.

I'm hoping it will stay dry on 21st as I've been gathering wood to build a large bonfire which will be lit at dusk of the shortest day.

I'll be casting symbols of things from 2016 I'd like to see the back of into the flames and making some wassail gestures for a better 2017.

Virgin coppers.

They're the ones who haven't pushed anyone down the stairs yet.

'Oh dear sir, we do appear to have taken a nasty tumble, don't we?'

They have all sorts of 'little tricks'. Like appearing to restrain somebody by grabbing a handful of clothing, when they are also grabbing a handful of flesh and twisting it.

I know it hurts, it's an old judo dodge.

Nah, it's nice and atmospheric...! :ner::D

Just turn it into a cosy day in, snuggle up beside the fire, light some candles and put your feet up, pour yourself a glass of something nice and spin some tunes, or watch a good film.

It's Del's birthday today, so we're going into Shrewsbury to do some shopping, and buy her something suitably expensive for her birthday, then out for a meal later at a nice restaurant. Got to keep your good lady happy!

Are you a Christmas Eve tree-installer, then (presuming you have one)? Traditionally, that's the proper date, but for me there's not enough time to enjoy it before it has to come down again on the Epiphany (6th Jan) :)

Also, Del really enjoys decorating the tree on her birthday

struth
13-12-2016, 21:36
Modern tradition is to put up a Christmas tree the day or weekend after Thanksgiving (after the fourth Thursday in November). Thus on Black Friday. In some communities it is tradition to put up the Christmas tree on the 6th of December in honor on Saint Nicholas. The classic tradition is to put up the Christmas tree 12 days before Christmas day, on the 13th of December. In Catholic tradition the Christmas tree is put up after noon on Christmas eve.

I was brought up Catholic so that must be where I get the late tree thing from. I recall one of my younger brothers used to sort it all out. No-one else was that bothered until xmass eve when it was the last minute. You can't not have an xmass tree on xmass day. And it has to be a real one. And a Bond film in the afternoon. 'Zulu' on Boxing Day. Decent scoff and some boozing in the day, nothing's required of you, that's a perfect xmass.

27th Dec, back to normal.

Joe
14-12-2016, 09:36
I was brought up Catholic so that must be where I get the late tree thing from.

Umm. I think Marco is also Catholic.

Our tree routine was until this year dominated by when the local Scouts held their Christmas tree sale outside the local church. That's usually a week to ten days before Christmas, depending what day of the week it falls on. This year we're in the middle of major redecoration, so we've just bought a mini-tree, but not decorated it yet.

When I was a (Catholic) nipper, the Christmas tree went up whenever my dad could be arsed to get it out of the shed. Back then, of course, New Year's Day wasn't a holiday in England, so everyone was back to work on 27th December. (ISTR that Christmas Day wasn't a holiday in Scotland, but I could be wrong). In any case, we always spent Christmas Day and Boxing Day at my grandmother's in Liverpool. The trains ran on Christmas Day back then, of course.

struth
14-12-2016, 11:19
It was certainly late being adopted in presby Scotland. Think late 50's. Boxing day way much much later and was in 70's.

Yes, as Wikipedia confirms:

Christmas Day was introduced as a public holiday in Scotland in 1958, the observance of Christmas having abolished by an Act of Parliament in 1640.
Boxing Day (26 December) became a public holiday in Scotland in 1974.

I did that once with leather jacket.. damn thing was new as well. i slipped a ironweld patch under it and put a cloth over it, then a bit of heat. Surprisingly it worked well. If you cant find a stick patch you can make it with a bit of leather or similar and use stick hem between both surfaces. Then heat it.you can get it better fitted using a leather glue and patch from inside but you have to open the lining and then reinstate. More a job for a pro that

Sunny and very cold. Even though it is past midday the roof tiles are still covered in a thick frost. Looks like icing sugar. Half expecting the BBC to show up and start filming some Dickensian drama.

According to the Met Office the weather in my postcode right now should be fog. Couldn't really have got that more wrong, could they?

Much the same here. Just over 2C at the moment.

Was out putting charge on battery and blowing up a tyre in just a jersey up top, and it was fine. Think because there is no wind today. Car may not move now for a while....

Pretty nippy out there at the moment. The thermomenter is bang on zero and there's been a substantial crust of frost on everything for a few hours.

Really bad frost here. Worst in a long while. Went down the chippy earlier and the pavements were icy. Couldn't move at full speed or I'd have been on my arse.

The promised fog has belatedly arrived as well.

Nice and sunny here, but cold. Just going out for my daily 4-mile (brisk) walk! :)

Colder weather coming in for forseeable future. Cold and windy at moment, with wind picking up. Glad to be indoors tbh.
