View Full Version : Squeezebox Problem. Again.

Probably Stratmangler will answer this in 2.5 seconds.......The Logitech Media Server keeps stopping, and I have to keep restarting so I can listen to music stored on an attached hard drive.

My question is why?

And is there a longer term fix to stop it happening?

more details needed, what version? what hardfware is it running on? what OS?

First thing I'd check Craig is for networking gremlins.
Easy solution: switch everything off at the plug, including your router/hub..whatever.
(Don't switch your amps off :))

Switch back on in this order:
* Router/Hub

...then leave it a few minutes before switching everything else on.
then

* External drive
* SB touch

See what happens after that.

Assuming all things equal...90% of squeezebox issues can be solved by a network reset like I detailed above.

What device is the hard drive in question connected to?

Are you running LMS on a NAS/Server? Or are you using the touch as both server & player?

Stratmangler

From memory you're running TinySC on the Touch player itself, with a USB HDD hanging out the back of the Touch.
Is the USB HDD powered, or does it draw its power from the Touch?

It's powered Chris.

I've tried what Gaz suggested, still keeps dropping LMS, and until I do a ' Start LMS server' again, the player disappears off my Ipeng device

Have you tried swapping out the PSU?
The one supplied with the Touch is a cheap 'n' nasty SMPS, and it's not unknown for them to die.
And the PSU beginning to fail could cause such a problem.

Stratmangler
03-12-2016, 23:01
My last post isn't appearing at my end, so I'll attempt to replicate it.

Is the Touch on its original PSU?
If it is it's a cheap 'n' nasty SMPS, and it's not unknown for the supplied PSUs to gradually fail, and in the process cause all sorts of weird and wonderful problems.

The other thing you could try is to factory default the Touch and start again, but if the PSU is beginning its death throes this would not be of any great advantage.

...if you don't want to keep waking up to Sonny & Cher ;)...I'd suggest you use the touch in it's preferred configuration, I.E. with LMS running on another network device, NAS, Pi, laptop etc.

My guess is you're pushing the Touch beyond it's capabilities...:)

You're not wrong there!

I wonder if assigning static IPs on the Touch players would improve reliability?
That and reserving the allocated addresses on the router for the Touch players.
If there has been a change of service provider/router then the IP address leasing might not be as long term as it once once.
I had a similar issue when Virgin sent me a new router - the old one held onto licences so that they were effectively static, whereas the new one gives devices a new IP address if you happen to sneeze at the wrong moment.
I ended up reserving an IP address for my NAS on the new router, and then making the address static on the NAS in order to stop the damned thing going walkabout on the network.

Just a thought ....

Back to first principles, Chris' suggestion was a good 'un.
Do you still have the original PSU Crag?

If so try that, see what happens.

Assuming Ipeng has picked up your Touch now?

Just make sure that it really is the one that came with your Touch - the Touch requires 5vdc input, and if you plug in a higher voltage supply you'll be sniffing majik smoke, and mourning the loss of your Squeezebox Touch.
Tread very carefully ......

cheapest option I'd try is a PI runnning LMS instead

Mark Grant doesn't produce power supplies.

Mark supplied me with the little plug that goes into the SB, so my old addled brain recalled the name and wrongly put that!

It's one of those S Booster things, with the power supply.

Edit to add: I just Googled Mark Grant, and yes he does supply them.

Hi Craig,
wheres your music stored and how is it connected to your Touch?

USB hard drive into the Touch?

or

Music stored in computer fed by Ethernet?

if USB then your Touch is using a cut down version of squeezebox software that is known to be a bit flakey and unreliable.
Have a laptop kicking around?
Install the full Logitech Media Server software on that, hook your usb hard drive to that and connect laptop to your Touch with an ethernet cable.
MUCH more stable and reliable connection and a lot less hassle in the long run.

Markiii

less wrong as not really possible, a simply external drive won't have an ethernet connection so I'd expect you have it plugged in via USB

a pic would be useful

this is an ethernet cable

working from right to left you have Power, USB, Ethernet

Straight into the SB.....is that wrong?

Ah-ha.
May have cracked it.

So...
You have a powered USB hard drive connected to the Touch's usb port.
AND
You have an ethernet cable connected to the Touch too?

I'm assuming Craig your music is on the USB drive?

If your music is coming from the USB drive connected to the Touch just unplug the Ethernet cable.
The way the Touch works it its either one or other?
i.e.
If Ethernet connection, you install squeezebox software LMS on your computer, and the Touch picks it up and your music there.

IF USB Drive connection, the Touch has its own smaller version of the squeezebox software, TinyLMS.

I think there's a conflict going on and the Touch doesnt know what source to connect to.
Disconnect your Ethernet cable, go into settings on your Touch and tell it you want to use the USB drive.

icehockeyboy
06-12-2016, 16:48
No Gaz, just the one Ethernet cable from the HDD to the Touch.

In the attached HDD.
However, I think I must be losing it......there is NO Ethernet connected to the Touch at all!

I now remember I took it out of the equation as I'd only used it to ensure max signal strength, but I have 100% wireless anyway!

So what's next master?

Markiii
06-12-2016, 19:31
looks to me like you are definately using Tiny SC

next for me would run LMS on something else, either the PI I suggested or if you have a PC, install on that and see if it solves the issue

Factory reset your SB Touch Craig.
Power down the Touch and restart it whilst holding down the "+" button on the remote.

I suspect that Craig has some sort of electrical wiring problem, or gets hit by lightning, from time to time. I noticed that almost every time he has an issue with the Touch, the Caiman DAC he has tends to go faulty at the same time as well. So something is knocking out the Touch and the Caiman.
