View Full Version : Would a new bearing affect height of platter?

Hello, would fitting a new bearing change the height of the platter? Been looking at a 1210 with an Applied fidelity bearing and the platter seems to sit slightly lower, as in a tiny bit below the surface. Anyone any experience of this or other bearings affecting platter height? Thanks.

I only have experience with the IanMac bearing which is a modded stock bearing. Nothing done in the mod to alter platter height.

Thanks Rick, been looking at a 1210 with an Applied Fidelity bearing, the platter sits a few mm below plinth, doesn't seem right to me, wonder if its been done correctly?

Will this make any difference its only 80 thou , adjust the VTA job done , very easy

Hi, I was just wondering whether the new bearing was fitted correctly, its a deck I'm thinking of buying, with a Fidelity Audio bearing, I guess there might be some play in the bearing height seeing as they are modded.

I dont think bearing can be fitted wrong , from memory they are held in with 3 screws

It's not just a matter of VTA. If it is lower, then the magnet sits lower around the coils. No idea how this might affect functionality though

Ask Applied Fidelity they made the bearing
I have a 1210 with a mike new bearing and his ETP platter this was slightly different , Made no difference once set up

Regarding platter height and bearing types and/or modifications:---------

If you have a situation where the platter seems to be out of vertical position then this may be due to one of two reasons.
The bearing itself has a differing distance from it's base to the three reference location posts which in turn determine the height of the platter.
For instance my Bearing Base Plates raise the height of the platter by 6mm
OR
The platter is not correctly located to the coil assembly which would have far greater ramifications.

The bearing taper position and location of the platter has an effect on the connectivity
of the direct drive motor and it's performance.
This is because the housing of the OEM bearing (the week very flimsy die cast, gray metal part with the three holes) locates
into the drive coil stater. This in turn determines the axial location of the permanent magnet rotor attached to the platter
with respect to the coil assembly.
If these distances are not made to be absolutely correct according to the existing design criteria of the stater/rotor assembly
then a power loss and loss of syncronicity will occur.

During the final assembly of my High Precision Bearing I use a specially machined precision location gauge to adjust the exact
position of the spindle taper with respect to the reference location supports of the outer housing. As determined by the design engineers who created the direct drive motor in the first place.
I used a professional CADNC system to "reverse engineer" the total internal design in order to get all the interacting locational distances correct.
If new spindle support bits are used for instance on bearings in a misguided attempt to "improve" them. Then these distances can now be incorrect and performance will suffer.

My original Technics platter is sitting on a Mike New Bearing and the platter sits in exactly the same place. I don't have the Mike New base plate fitted

If I may comment on the applied fidelity bearing question?, if the 1210 was up for sale on another forum recently the reason why the bearing indeed the spindle looked lower ( if it's the same one as I've seen ) is because the platter had the Applied fidelity turntable mat ( aluminium backed ) in situ which sits dorectly on top of the rim of the platter below , so the spindle would look smaller. If it's the same one I've seen of course .

If it isn't the same one then accept my apologies in advance.
