Hi guys,

In a nutshell:

I'm picking up horrific hum whilst using my Mission 774 tonearm. Its got Klotz MC5000 cable soldered to with the shield connected at one end. So it's floating. it has sounded magnificent until i put the Sony 730es into the system.

I've just plumbed the SME 3009 into the system in the Missions place and used the original SME cable and .......NO HUM

So what is the SME cable made of ???

So here is where I need help. What kind of cable would shield in the same way as the original SME cable.

Oliver. I doubt it's a screening/shielding issue. It'll likely be an earth loop. Disconnect any earth connections (excluding the negs on the signal cable obviously) and if the hum goes you're sorted. If not reconnect them one at a time. If that does not work, try adding an earth wire from the turntable motor (from a mounting screw should do) to the arm base or earth.

OK. Still not sure. I'll just trial and error my way through. Noticed I'd put the blue wire on thee green pin on the cart. Is that the problem I wonder. The blue wire is the earthed wire from the pin in the head block.

Could be... as geoff says switch them to correct way.. :)

Changed it and we're back in business. SME soon to be in "private exhibitions" lol. So happy I could shit hahaha

You'll have no bother selling the SME. The Shure should go easily too, if you plan to move it on.

That is true, maybe less interference ? No idea really.

Thanks Alan, I also got to hear the Monos and quads so nit a wasted day and it looks like I'll be buying a nice MC cart from the sale of the bits i got when I bought the replacement plinth. So not a total waste at all.
