My bloody great big ugly multi channel suround sound amp has got to go!
I don't have the space, it's ugly, ss is an after thought!
So here is the plan
use my main speakers, but just swop the cables when I want to use the suround sound.
I have a blu-ray player that has 6 channel analoge output so -
take the sub out direct to the powered sub
take the rest of the outputs to maybe 3 tripaths, one for the front 2 speakers one for the rear 2 speakers and one for the centre speaker this should give enough variation in output per speaker for me to get the levels right... But, will this work? I'm happy that the front 2 speakers would be at the same level and the rear 2 at the same level!
I can flog my yam ss amp for enough money to buy 3 cheap tripaths and I recon It would provide enough sound for my liking!
The other option, and maybe a better one would be a amp that has 5 independant inputs and 5 speaker outputs, all with independant volume controls ... Would I have to seek out some kind of pro amp for that?
Can anyone think of another solution that wouldn't take up as much space as a full size ss amp?
Or anyother ideas?

It's just occured to me that I don't think my blu-ray doesn't actually have a volume control so this is a bad idea.... Basically ignor this thread unless anyone can think of a way round my problem!
Someone should invnt a slim ss amp that doesn't have and dsp built into it just volume controls ... I don't need all that bull crap my bd player does it all anyway!!

Can't remember what speakers you use Hamish,but using a valve amp through my statics I feel no need whatsoever for a surround system,as I get such a large soundstage anyway.:)

Depends whether you want to rely on the DACs in your BluRay player for analogue out to normal systems or a dedicated HD audio capable processor. I am lucky in that I have two rooms, one for 5.1 AV duties and another for music. Not everyone has that luxury (i.e. being a bachelor :) )

The other thing, and I know some will class this as heresy here, is that AV amps like Denon etc. have good room EQ which I personally is important for surround systems. Integrating the sub with 5 satellites, which are usually not the same models, is not easy. Then there is the whole reference vs preference debate to be had...

Best choice for you is a Cyrus AV Master Processor/amplifier : it's small and with excellent sound.
You will also need a LINE multi-switch (at about £10) and no need for switching speaker cables : you can use your power amp for front speakers.

(I had told you to ask for a bypass... ;))

i am actually very confident with ss, we specialise in it at the shop... and im the specialist! (i just had a bit of a "special" moment when i was thinkin g about this last night!)
i just dont think what i want actually exists
heres my specs

slimline - about the height of an average cd player
i dont want to use my valves for the front speakers (wastefull!!)
im happy swoping speaker cables
im happy using the blu-rays dac

i basically want an amp with 5 independantly variable speaker outputs, a passive out for the sub and a master volume.. im not fussed about dsp il make the best of what i have got

does this exist?

An interesting compromise is a HK AVR-160 (discrete output, almost no negative feedback)
But it's rather high... 16cm... I keep on looking, I'll find something tonight. :)

I listened to it's bigger brother, it's very-very decent sounding AV amp.
The NR1501 has all the necessary things : 4 HDMI inputs, video conversion to HDMI output, MRAC auto-calibration, deep color passthrough, lipsync, OSD...
It's a neat piece of kit, not too expensive moreover. ;)
