yes I know there is that thread on repairing wadia but a quick chat with coherent [tony] would reassure I am sure . rock solid quality

I do understand your concerns though . I do like my msb transport which can easily change the drive in the future if breaks down . so many cd mechanisms are no longer made and a very expensive cd player can be rendered useless fast as you can see in that thread

Have you considered a Technics Sl P 1200B ?

Good enough for the BBC broadcast team , I have one and rate it highly , They are not keen on diy dvr recordings

They are difficult to get , one here with the remote

There's a Yamaha one, bloody hell I can't remember the model number, CD only not SA-CD and it's really nice. Great sound and solid build with retro simple-Yamaha elegance. I think this is it below. new with full manufacturer warranty - a pal has one and I have used it.

I also heard the Quad Artera Play recently. OK, it's Quad, but don't let the name put you off looking. It's got a good preamp in it too and I thought it sounded great, retaining the emotional content in the music really well.

You'd probably find Rega players boringly predictable and not good enough looking, but they do the job so well and offer superb after sales care should it ever be needed.....

I like the Yam gear but I forgot to mention I am looking for Bal connections.

There was a Consonance CD 2.2 Linear on here a week or two back, at a fraction of your budget.
I had one and can say how great they are, and I do believe balanced connections are standard.

Yes it was mine. Still for sale. Output from player to low for my set up at 2.3 mv.

How about a Rega Saturn...

No I don't have one but did have a lone of one for a little while and it was very good... however I did not rate the highly regarded Apollo (non R) at all...

I can second the "thumbs down" for the Apollo. It just had nothing captivating about it: Very mechanical and offered no enjoyment factor.

Save money and get a Pioneer PD-S505 Precision. That's the 'stable platter' type with the Tom Evans upgrades inside.

I have two and they are as musical as my £1200 Meridian. Great as a transport too and they don't go wrong.

Lovely players.

Put a 'wanted' in Private Exhibitions'. Bet somebody has one knocking about.

Or look on Gumtree.

How about an Oppo BDP-105 (https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-105/). In your budget and Hi-Fi World are always banging on about how good a source it is. It has balanced output too.

I love my Rega Apollo-R (http://www.rega.co.uk/apollo-r.html) which I use as a transport for my M2Tech Young DAC. I like the lack of moving parts - no moving tray to break - and simplicity of it. With your budget you could afford this unit and still have almost £500 for a DAC - perhaps the matching Rega DAC, or a Audiolab M-DAC.

Thanks for all the replies and interesting information. I have more questions than answers know.
