Is it safe, Harry? I'd be worried DAC stands for Death After Coma... ;)

Joking aside, presume it is a work in progress - could you give us a bit more info, what the theory is, parts are, intention etc?

There's a lot about these DAC's on the net. They caused quite a stir in the DIY community.

The Sabre dac is supposed to be the bee's bollocks. Not heard one myself though. There is always a rush when Twisted Pear release a batch for sale, they always sell out pretty quickly.

Sure. I've attached an additional photo which may offer a "bigger picture". From the top of the photo we have the digital signal taken directly from the I2S output of a CD-PRO2 module and handed off via the four beige wires to an Asynchronous Sample Rate Converter which bumps up the word length and sample frequency to 24/96 and then passes that along in I2S to a Buffalo 32S DAC which then outputs the (now) balanced analogue signal to the left/right mono power amps. From the power amps the signal is fed to the speakers (ProAc Response Two's) which are outside of the picture boundaries. The variously sized black blocks are batteries varying electrically from +6V to +48V/0/-48V. All components save for the CD-PRO2 are battery powered.
Is it safe? Of course it isn't. But as my father used to say , "It can't sound good if it can't kill ya." Please, ask away, if you have any questions.

Thanks Harry, makes more sense now - I'm still a bit frightened, though! ;)

Still, you must admit, the Buffalo setup is safer than what's in the photo. One of my earlier battery efforts. Two hundred twenty-five amps delivered BAM! You must be very very careful.
No second chances.

Hypex UcD180's is what they are, Leo. They perform admirably - no complaints ... and that's coming from an SET guy. In regards to your 32S ... superb tweaks, Leo, well done. Thank you for the link. There is, of course, a revised Buffalo 32 in the works. Should surface January 2010 according to the TP website. Once again, Leo, lovely work on the 32S. Have you a current DIY project underway?

Ali it is certainly the best DAC I have heard even with the conventional TP power supplies; some day I will try it with batteries.

I did not get mine on the first evening but on the second - I was pressing buttons so quickly I did not notice I had selected (and could have bought) two of them.

TP look as though they are going to release an new version which Russ White (the designer) seems to think is another step forward - if so I will after this one as well!

Harry - what type of batteries are you using? SLA's, LiFePo4's or nicads?
