Funky futuristic turntable .. in 1972

This picture comes from a gallery feature in today's Guardian about Waltham Forest’s red-brick housing Estate, Warner :

There's some beautiful images and they really take you back to another time, but the one that stood out for me is of a young blonde in a mini-dress fiddling with a small knob ..

I love the look of the stereo.
The way it fits PERFECTLY into that alcove.
Were alcoves standard sizes ??
Was it a custom build if not ?
I've got my dad's old Reader's Digest Complete DIY Manual from the late 60s/early 70s, and it looks like one of the projects inside :

Anyone remember seeing or even owning something like this ?

I'd love to know more ..
At first, it looks too sleek, too modern to be any kind of real turntable, but then you see the deck is embedded into the unit itself and see that it's all one piece with the controls to the left and a matching speaker on a higher shelf above.
I like the cut-out for the TV too - they thought of everything :lol:

I live in one of those Warner houses. Lovely they are too. You have to share your back garden with your neighbour but thats no bother generally. There is quite a solid community to be honest, many folks have been living in these streets for a long time. My 78 year old neighbour was born and grew up in our flat! Those photographs in The Guardian article are great, a lot more cars on the street nowadays mind. This is how our living room looks these days compared to that one with the turntable. Nice pins by the way!

I lived for about 18 months not far from you in South Woodford and know what you mean about community.
I was a student in a similar house and worked in the pub by the tube station and got to know everyone in the area and it was amazing to think I was in London and yet it still felt like a provincial town .. which of course it would've been classified as before the M25 got built, I suppose ?

Ilford Palais, Walthamstow dogs, Charlie Chan's afterwards if you got lucky .. hoping you'd get lucky again ;)

Very similar to my livingroom really. We have 2 alcoves. Designed around same time i guess in just after the war. Good houses, but up here you get a garden the size of a park. And yes i remember those dresses...my sister had one much to mammies disdain

I think it looks more like the kind of Garrard you'd get in a Hacker one-box player, judging on the curve of the control panel and the shape of the upright selector on the right hand front corner of the deck.

I've got four tattoos myself, but they're discrete and only one shows when I'm wearing a t-shirt (Susan Tedeschi's signature on the my inner left forearm) but I actually agree : I find them tacky on a woman and yet I call myself a feminist and believe in equality for all.

Just personal preference I guess.

I don't mind the odd little one, but not those big angels' wings in the small of the back - "target zones" they're also known as .. use your imagination and you'll work out why.

One of the great loves of my life had just the name of her sister under her left breast in small script because she died at 21 of an asthma attack.
That was beautiful, like her ..

.. all the rest are just skanks :D

Some great pictures. Funny how it is hard to tell apart the pictures from the early 1900's and the pictures from the 1950s. Same clothes, same absence of cars in the streets.

Agree about pierced ears for a woman, and, I suppose for a man. But I think men wearing two loop-style earings look comical; they ought to have "lift here" tattooed over each ear, as they remind me of the lifting lugs and rings on heavy equipment.

I find facial tattoos and piercings especial difficult; I have to look away, which I suppose defeats the purpose.

Really find them a turn-off.

Twice I've been out with women with body-piercings and twice everything has .. er .. ground to a halt just when it should be getting exciting.

The first time twenty years ago was a belly-button ring which was weeping with pus because the girl had a hitherto unknown allergy to metal (steel, presumably as gold was okay). The smell was horrific and I was just starting on a little adventure through her hills and down to the valley at the time ..

The second was an older woman more recently who had both nipples pierced with large, chunky gold rings. They looked horrible. I hated them.
She had lovely boobs and a good figure but as soon as I saw them she could tell I wasn't impressed.
To her credit, she took them out immediately, but then she sniffed them and pulled a face ..

Both situations led to swift and terminal conclusions.


Okay, one thing that REALLY makes me laugh - especially with men, for some reason - is those tribal rings that enlarge the ear-lobe.

I've seen indigenous people in southern Africa in their natural environment wearing them and they're fine .. it's what they do.
But to see some fat, pasty, white goth with a ring you could pass a banana through just makes me roar with laughter every time I see it.

I can't take my eyes off them and it's all I can do to stop myself saying : "WHY ??" :stalks:

I just wonder if they ever take them out to clean them and what it looks like "limp" and how they'll look on the bus as they go to collect their pensions in forty years from now .. :doh:

I don't think it's necessarily an age thing, mate - just whether you're into it or not. I know quite a few young folks (in their 20s) who aren't into piercings or tattoos at all. And yes, I have no doubt your good lady isn't a skank! ;)

Where is this thread Jamie? If you were refering to the late Pete Burns, the phrase "has gone tits (up?)" is a very poor choice under the circumstances.

Given that you appear to be able to see part of the record label below the headshell, I'd say it is a ceramic cartridge in its bracket. it appears to be dark grey in colour as far as I can see, so I'm going with a Sonotone 3509.

Could be. It's very indistinct, but I agree it appears grey. I had in mind an Audio Technica MM. There was a grey one about then. Can't recall the model number, but I had one about forty years ago.
