I used an Xbox 360 as DVD/CD player for a bit, absolutely shite, I've heard the first play station is a good transport though

If you've got the console, you must have a controller with it, surely ?

Think you have to adapt them to make it sound good. One sold on here once if memory serves

Heard one once years ago. It was Decent.. Not massively so just better than expected from a Worn out game console.
Operative adjective being: Clapped, a certainty by this time.
There were a whole range of esoteric tweaks (dohh) foisted on these by true believers IIRC.
I found a brand new (then ) 50$ Toshiba DVD player to significantly better the playstation. I bought 2 Toshibas as result and used it/them for ~10 years.

i since found out its the very first ps1's that have the rca sockets that are the ones to go for, like you say ther's work involved so i'll be sticking with the old technics for now :)

It was indeed the original PS1 with the RCA outputs. I had one for a whole and used it with a PS2 remote. I also modified it to bypass the output stage. Better than the average, but very easy to beat at a modest outlay.
