View Full Version : Last New Album You Bought
Folks have been asking me if I want any cd's for xmas, so I was thinking about what I would like and it struck me that I couldn't think of anything new. It was all old stuff. Stuff to fill holes in my catalogue, or stuff that I wanted way back but never got around to buying. I can't remember the last NEW cd I bought. Let me think.... it was probably Kings of Leon's Only By The Night, and before that Paul Weller's 22 Dreams. Others include McCartney's The Firemen, Neon Neon's Stainless Steel and Super Furry Animals' Dark Days/Light Years.
I know I've just turned 40 but is this really what happens? You lose touch with the new stuff?
Xmas time was a time of year when I used to take a chance on something new. I used to get some vouchers or even cash from Uncles and Aunts and I used it to make a risk purchase; maybe something I'd only read reviews about but not heard, before I had the internet and Spotify. That started with Neil Young's Sleeps With Angels, which led to a slew of Neil Young purchases. Then there was The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, and Wilco's Being There. Great stuff.
Now, I'm a bit stuck for something new. Perhaps cos my listening habits and methods have changed. I'm married now and have a kid so I don't have the time like I used to.
I've come up with about 5 or 6 cd's that I'd like:
Pearl Jam's Backspacer and Yield
LadyHawke's Self Titled (Hey, that's modern stuff!)
Pink Floyd's Animals, and The Wall
a-Ha's Foot of the Mountian
7 Worlds Collide (Neil Finn Collaboration) The Sun Came Out
oh and Muse's The Resistance.
I'm usually in double figures easily.
So, what about you? Buying old stuff? New stuff? Bit of both?

Funny one this. I'm pretty much buying old stuff at the moment, but the last 'new album' I bought was recorded 36 years ago, but not released until now. Topanga Sunrise (http://sierrarecordsbookshomevideo.goestores.com/storename/sierrarecordsbookshomevideo/dept/264353/ItemDetail-10509823.aspx) by Skip Battin. I've not received it yet but bought it on pre-order, along with 45 other die hard Byrd fans, apparently :)
I can't remember the last album I bought - sad, isn't it..... Come to think of it, it may be "Madcaps Flaming Duty" by Tangerine Dream, their best effort in years.....
To be honest, I have a reasonably vast library of LP's and CD's that haven't been played for ages, so I'm happy trawling through these.

Subscribe to a mag like Q, Uncut or the Word (there are many others, but I rarely get into a WH Smiths as there are none near me..!) - all have cover mounted cd's, and for me they are a great source of new music - my list is all from the last few months 'Word' cd's
makes the cover price a total bargain
The King of Elflands Daughter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King_of_Elfland%27s_Daughter_%28album%29). On Vinyl of course! Excellent copy as well, near mint.
Brilliant album. I was surprised I didn't have it already.
I also watch Jools Holland he has some good new and old bands on there some weeks, other weeks it's shit

I often Spotify the new releases in the Saturday/Sunday Times, buying the odd one, or adding them to a Spotify playlist. Agree Uncut magazine etc too, but I also sometimes stick music TV on - the Q and NME channels are good for non-pop.

Of the albums you've listed Lee the only one I've bought is the Ladyhawke one - but that's well over a year old now. (Fantastic album, though.)
Do you have the Unforgettable Fire Deluxe Remaster? Any good?
Oh I buy the music mags now and again; Q, Uncut, Word. I particularly like the end of year best of's.
I'd like to add, that while some of my cd buying is about filling holes in my catalogue, they're often not necessarily what I want to listen to now. Anyone else do that, or just me?

It is just as hard and forceful as Mutter, but at the same time they tried to incorporate some of the more beautiful themes of Sehnsucht. It is in my opinion the best rammstein album to date.

Themis... I find Tull often a bit out of reach. I love their folk period and the three CD's mentioned which I used to have on vinyl. I also quite like The Minstrel In The Gallery but the rest of their stuff I just can't get my head around.
I guess if the truth were fully known, I'd rather listen to King Crimson, ELP, Genesis, Rush, Yes et al but I do like the three mentioned Tull albums an awful lot.

You'll never guess where I just found my Crest of a Knave album. Took me 10 minutes to find it, but yep, there it was mixed in with my Dire Straits albums. :o
I dug it out because I've not listened to it for years. . . .

I have always enjoyed listening to new music. Lately I been getting into Last FM and this has got me into a few bands I would of not heard of which in my books is always a good thing

i tend to think that most people will tend to keep to music they know and understand. For me I never been into chart music I always had to search to find music and still love the thrill of discovering an album that moves me
My problem is I need to be spoon fed - in days gone by I'd hear a record I'd like on TV or radio and check out the band. I've never been one for seeking out music - too lazy, probably. Now either there are no good new bands/artists any more or if they are they don't get played on TV - hence the deficit in my new music purchases.

Yes I'm still back-filling with old stuff (Susy picked up a cracking copy of Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I in a charity shop for £2 yesterday), but there's too much good new stuff around to ignore.

My newly souped-up Techie, combined with the fact that a surprising number of brand new releases are coming out on vinyl, means that I'm finding myself tempted to double-up on certain albums which I really like. i.e. buying the CD and vinyl versions...

I've not really taken any brave steps with a totally new artist. Must try and rectify that. What would you recommend? I like what I've heard of Editors.
p.s. Bought my Mum the Michael Buble cd for xmas. Ripped it myself. His version of Cry Me a River is fantastic I have to say. A song I never really liked before.
if you want to discover music in a similar vain try last fm its not great quality download but when you set up you station it will play artists who have a similar sound so a great way of discovering music

Depends what you're into but I'd defo give Arcade Fire, Mumford and Sons and White Lies a go....
Listening to the cinematic orchestra, ma fleur. Wonderful sublime stuff

Just got the new Gil Scott-Heron lp I'm New Here and spent the last couple of days listening to it as per the 'instructions'.

Recently, like some others, I've been exploring streaming and downloads. I do a lot of listening via Napster through our Squeezebox - the quality is often surprisingly bearable. The quality via Spotify is probably better, but I've not tamed that yet (figured out how to stream it the SB3). Also have bought some downloads from Amazon and HMV. The Glazunov symphonies conducted by Fedoseyev is really good value - either 4.99 or 5.99 depending exactly on track listing (I think iTunes also has it). HMV had a spledid download set for 7.99 - Glazunov symphonies - BBC NOW - coducted by Tadaaki Otaka - though the CDs are currently about 30 quid. Not sure what's happened to the HMV download site right now though, seems to be being reorganised. A few other good albums - the special deal of Myaskovsky symphonies (15,21,26,10) with the cello concerto from eMusic - around 5 quid equivalent in points - also by Fedoseyev - and they also have the Glazunov set by Fedoseyev.
I also got the Grechaninov cello concerto from Napster.
Having said all this, I was so impressed with the Tadaaki Otaka Glazunov set that I bought the CDs as well. Other recent CDs are the Myaskovsky symphony set by Svetlanov, and the Naxos set of Sibelius symphonies by the Iceland SO cond. by Petri Sakari, which is very well recorded and a pretty decent set of performances. Romance - a collection by Josef Suk on Supraphon has the beautiful Romance by Dvorak - worth it for that alone, though maybe the recording doesn't sound as smooth nowadays. Originally it was on a lovely LP.

I have all his albums,mostly LP's and 17 CD's from Mr.Waits so I've heard his voice grow deeper and raspeyer over the long years.
This album was like listening to the crokeing of a dieing thoat cancer victum.
Cigarets won.
Sad for me a really big fan of the Tom Kat.
