I remember a lot of things I used to like eating that you just don't see in this 'supermarket age'.
Some seem to have vanished entirely and others are rarely found.
How about hot roasted chestnuts from a street vendor?
Or proper liquorice 'wood' sticks?
Fresh hot roasted peanuts from the big glass hopper on the Woolworths counter and elsewhere.
Many years ago 'Sunny Spread', made from honey and sugar.
'Pan-Yan' pickle. (I used to love that)
Malt extract. Not everybody's cup of tea maybe, but I liked it.
Fresh Gooseberries.
Tiger nuts.
Fresh Blackcurrants.
Big Victoria Plums. Proper British ones!
Dried figs. Still available but hard to find.
Duck eggs. Most butchers sold them. Not now. Farms sell them still.
Proper Golden Syrup. I bought some Tate & Lyle's a while back. It was very thin and runny and pale, nearly white in fact and that nice tangy taste was missing, it was just sugary. Shame.
I'm sure there are many more.
Anybody think of any?
still get duck eggs here... Figs too, in Morrisons or Tesco.. one or 'tother. Malt extract you can get online. I got some a year or 3 back. still got it actually as I never used it. Probably out of date but will likely be ok. Your right about the syrup.. its not same as it was... used to love a syrup piece(sandwich).
I miss rice Cremola.. loved that. you can make it yourself though and its just the same

I've never seen duck eggs in supermarkets here. Tesco did briefly have dried figs a while back, but they are not usually available.
Duck eggs are in most of our locale butchers shops. Good ones anyway. A lot of folk here keep ducks so they are available. I used to get em from my bro as one of his neighbours keeps them and bantams. He grows lambs and sometimes a pig or two, so get fresh lamb and plenty bacon.. got a big block the other day from him actually.. I'm not a fig man, so cant say when available but do like dates. especially those big fancy ones they eat after Ramadan or whatever. .:eyebrows: delish

Do you remember the chocolate covered dates the sweet shops sold? Not seen them for ages.
Nor decent chocolate Brazils come to think of it. The ones with thick choc on them. Not the miserable things sometimes offered with a thin coating.
you used to get those medjool dates, the ones I was talking about, coated in choc and stuffed with almond pate or coconut. they were lovely. as you say not seen them for years

Never seen those in there. I'll have another look, 'cos I'd like some, but I don't think they have those locally. Maybe just sold online.

Alas yes John. Mums cooking is usually the best. :) just dont ask my kids that or they would disagree lol. The wife was no cook, but she did try :eyebrows: i did and still cook(taught by my mammy)initially. I must get round to writing some of my famous passed down the line recipes be fore they are lost for ever.

Hmm. My mum's cooking was reasonably decent. Well she was French. My daughter is a professional cook (and manager) for a fairly exclusive catering company and she can do pretty fair food. But to be honest. I'm the best cook in the family and they'd say so. My meals are always appreciated and they insist on my doing the xmas dinner, 'cos mine are great! :D

Hmm. My mum's cooking was reasonably decent. Well she was French. My daughter is a professional cook (and manager) for a fairly exclusive catering company and she can do pretty fair food. But to be honest. I'm the best cook in the family and they'd say so. My meals are always appreciated and they insist on my doing the xmas dinner, 'cos mine are great! :D

Fresh Gooseberries.
Was thinking about that myself the other day! Haven't seen gooseberries in a supermarket for years.
...or Russet Apples either come to think of it.

You can still get gooseberries in supermarkets but the season is incredibly short (no more than a couple of weeks). I always start to look out for them a week or two after Wimbledon. This year's season was incredibly short.
You can always buy a couple of gooseberry bushes.

My Mums Lancashire Hot Pot. Bloody lovely! :)
Proper American-made frozen waffles. All the big supermarkets used to sell them, now none of them do. I guess I was the only one buying them. The European equivilents are just not the same.
